Nothing he could have done for either goal, but a good save in the first half when he saw the ball late, and a brilliant one to preserve the point at the end

Yeah, played really well tonight in fairness to him

Very little to do today, made one good save in the first half but was lucky to get away with a few things, one of his clearances hit a defender and could have gone anywhere (not sure that's entirely his fault tbf), and their best chance came from a cross which should have been dealt with both at source and by Bachmann

According to fbref, after yesterday, Bachmann is now the best shot-stopper in the division, having prevented 4.5 goals in 26 games for a per 90 figure of 0.17 (out of all the keepers who have played at leas 18 games). There are keepers who have prevented more goals, but Bachmann has played fewer games than Gunn, Rushworth and Hermansen. Fair play Dan!

For the record, Ben Hamer is 6th having prevented 1.9 goals in his 19 games (I remember he had some absolutely storming games, but was shaky in the last 2 games before Bachmann was recalled), and Jack Bonham has prevented 2.5, though he has only played 14 games

He’s done well since Cleverly came in to be fair, but still a poor season overall. Given limited budget we have to stick with him I guess. Massive holes elsewhere in the squad.

I'm being generous when I say cavernous holes in the squad.
Bachmann has more than proved his worth in this league. We all want an upgrade but can't see it happening.

On balance, I think he's had more good games than bad, with Hamer seemingly off, we'll need another goalkeeper, hopefully one that can challenge for the #1 jersey, Bachmann seems to perform better when he's got someone who he knows is going to push him

He’s performed well these past few weeks.

There are many other players more worthy of the hatred he seems to get in some quarters.

How does he compare stats-wise for flapping his arms around and hollering at his teammates for things that are 99% his responsibility?

Hopefully he can now go a summer without yabbering to the Austrian sports press about how good he is. That'd be a good start to him turning over a new leaf.

Probably depends if he gets in the Austrian squad for the Euros - sure he will tell everyone he ought to be.

TBF if you want the #1 international spot you're hardly going to say anything to your country's press other than you are brilliant and s/be #1 ?

Now that's above my paygrade, maybe our resident statto @reids might have the answer to that! You can't win them all I suppose, if he were a good shot-stopper, but also did everything else very well, it's very unlikely he'd still be here

I'm gonna duck and take cover after posting this, but he actually ranks pretty well under most metrics including: Claims or CCAA% (Claimable Collection Attempts over Average), is a measure of how likely the goalkeeper is to attempt to claim a "claimable" pass, versus the average goalkeeper attempted claim rate.....

Using my eyes, it seems he's fine taking the crosses you'd expect him to take, but hesitant when the ball is in the corridor of uncertainty, which has led to us conceding chances and goals over the years. What do the other stats mean? He looks pretty good in terms of not passing into the danger zone (unless I've completely misinterpreted that lol, but I think he's actually good at keeping it simple and not cocking up short passes, it's the longer kicks which he struggles with, certainly yesterday that was the case), and pretty middle of the road in terms of positioning errors, I presume the aggressive distance is related to sweeping? And is the 'positive outcome' an amalgamation of all the other stats?

  20. reids

    reids First Team

Yeah, I think GK is one of those positions that's hard to quantify with stats (along with CBs) that misses a lot of what we see.

    The other stats:

Goalkeeper Aggressive Distance: An average value of how far from the goal the goalkeeper is coming forward to perform defensive actions.
Pass into Danger%: Percentage of passes made where the recipient was deemed to be under pressure or was next engaged with a defensive action
Positive Outcome: A possession that connected through the player and resulted in either a shot, free kick in the attacking half or a corner
Positioning Error: How far from the optimal position for facing a shot the Goalkeeper is (on average). This metric is modelled from a starting point of the average location of goalkeepers from 20 shots from similar locations and the deviation from that average is the distance away from the "optimal" location for any given goalkeeper location on a shot.
Shot Stopping%: The measure of goals saved above average, as a percentage of shots faced by the goalkeeper.

Yep . Bachmann drops rickets. If he didn't then he wouldn't be playing for us.
But his errors are amplified because of the lack of potency up top
If a striker scores regularly then no one notices the occasional mistake from a keeper or LB

  22. Jumbolina

By your logic if our strikers scored regularly then they wouldn’t be playing for us, so guess we are stuck with Bayo and Bachman for the duration. A glorious future awaits!

Absolutely. The mindset you're hinting at here is what drives me a little mad. We were treated to a lot of quality players pulling on the shirt in the PL stint and my expectations aren't crazy enough to expect us to be attracting a Deulofeu or Capoue now. But it feels like some people (including Pozzo?) have conveniently deleted the bit that came before from their minds. The bit where we attracted real quality at this level, built a very solid team and got promoted. That's my expectation and I don't think it's unreasonable. Yet so many fans seem resigned to the 'we're little old Watford, if a player was good enough he wouldn't be here' mentality. Infuriating.

Presume you're talking about the GT and Boothroyd promotions ? That's true but only happened twice over a 15 year or so period. Most of the time we had a bunch of mediocre players for this level and managed to stay up based on grit, commitment and hard work.

No, I'm talking about 2012-2015. I think the only arguably point against why it couldn't be done now is the Udinese well is pretty much dry. But fact remains, there's undoubtedly talented players of a similar ilk to Vydra, Abdi, Toszer etc out there, so I don't really get why it seems so many are prepared to settle for trying to polish footballing turds like Bayo, Ngakia and Dele-Bashiru (all of whom I'm sure are very nice young men and it's nothing personal, solely based on their on-pitch ability/contribution) rather than expecting and demanding more.

I think Bachmann having a spell out of the side has certainly done him good. He's by no means perfect and still has the odd brain fart, but he is a lot less hot headed and no more kung-fu kicks. I think we forgive him for walking off the pitch at Southampton, and Hamer has shown he is equally as capable in this division despite his age. I do serious feel we may have to look at a back up keeper though, as Roberts hardly seems to get any time at all.

As an aside, I assume Cleverley's going to have to address the captaincy situation for next season. I notice in his interview on the official site Hoedt calls Bachmann 'our captain', yet he's been the one wearing the armband for 5 months and is quite visibly the on-field leader. Maybe it doesn't matter to the players?

That’s true but having said that I’m not sure how many fans realise how bad this squad is about to come. Remove Asprilla and Dennis, Livermore/Hamer (depth) and Lewis\Martins (meh) and what are we left with? Centre Backs decent I guess. Imagine we have another similar window of the likes of Ince/Rajovic. People on twitter talk of a solid base to build on. I just dont see it. With a rookie manager this could get ugly quickly.

There was a reason why GD and EC played for us and not top 4 \6 teams and that is consistency as opposed to quality. People have short memories as I can remember the boo boys getting after GD when he was having an off day .

OK I assumed you'd discounted that because as you say because they showered us with some real talent that they had in reserve which they don't have today. They didn't "attract any real quality" and sign them for us, they already had them. It's a long time since they unearthed any cheap diamonds though - that is long long overdue but plenty more clubs are fishing in the same ponds now with experts and stats at they fingertips, and larger bank balances, which wasn't the case back in the day of the fabled Pozzo network

A lower champ squad. Just look back at the quality, or rather lack of it, in the 1990 squads and most of the 2000s. As you say it is going to shock many who have become accustomed to the quality of 2012-2022. The Pozzos only got us into the prem before due to the glut of quality reserves they could give us at no cost - they didn't spend anything on transfers did they. Not sure how they think they will ever get us back to the prem, maybe they have realistically, but not overtly, given up on that....
