I have to admit to now being utterly confused by this whole thing. All the stats seem to point to this being a somewhat more serious form of the flu that is only really serious for the elderly and/or those who already had severe underlying health issues. While this is a personal tragedy for any individual families who lose loved ones as a result, it doesn’t seem to warrant the reaction by governments such as Italy’s - unless it’s because no country’s health system can cope with so many of their elderly citizens (& I appreciate Italy has more than many) requiring hospital treatment at once. Is it simply this, or is this virus more serious than we think? I know there are two different strains now - is Italy suffering from the more severe strain of the two? I see that a doctor treating patients in Italy has posted an account on Facebook in which he criticises those claiming it’s just a bad flu, claiming it’s worse than that.
So is it? Or is the world in full-blown panic mode, just like the loo roll buyers?

I think it is very very very serious for the elderly with medical conditions. It may be nothing more than flu for the rest of us but if we act selfishly we will ignore the danger to others and it will spread more extensively and more quickly resulting in many more deaths. By delaying it, 1/ fewer elderly may ultimately be infected and 2/ with a smoothed peak the NHS will be better able to cope with those needing help. That's my take anyway.....big question is what is it worth in £££s and inconvenience to save the lives of the sick elderly ?

Probably too late for you, but I was reading an article this morning, I think it was on the Beeb website, that explained how air travel is not dangerous, or at least less dangerous than being in a building with other people. The main reason is that aircraft air conditioning systems change the air very quickly, and they use ultra efficient filters small enough to stop the nano particles of a virus. Cruise ships do not use change the air so quickly or use such filters and so potentially spread the virus.

I've got similar decisions to make, as I'll be flying a bit on business, and using trains a few times in the next month, so I'll keep a close eye.

Just heard that a sixth person has died in the UK, in the West Herts Health Trust, is that Watford? Or maybe that's south-west Herts, I've forgotten.

Had existing health problems, in their 70's.

I wonder what happens when the first WFC player contracts the virus ? All squad members who have been in contact are immediately required to go into isolation ? How do we complete our fixtures ?

From what I understand you are correct about air travel in terms of air quality. You are still potentially sitting in close to 8 or so individuals within 1 m of you which is potentially a risk. And other forms of transport will not have filtered air
If I had to take a bus I would insist the windows are open around me. Also I thought Irishrn you are relatively young (under 40) and again I presume your sons are younger. So your risk if you do get infected is low

Simple answer: we don't, or we play the remaining fixtures using the youth setup (which may or may not comfirm relegation. Italy have suspended football till April, the Prem will no doubt try to finish the season if they can.

Worrying if true. Yes a simple answer, but massive repercussions for the club, or any club if they are impacted but the rest of the league continues BAU.

I was under 40, about 12 years ago. I still have the option of going (flights booked and paid for), just too apprehensive.

My Gran is currently in Watford General with pneumonia, so this discovery of a patient dying there is concerning. I had heard the hospital had the virus in one ward which had been closed for deep cleaning. Still a shock hearing that someone there has died though, especially with a family member so close by at the moment, and a vulnerable one at that.

GF was treating me to a weekend away to Barcelona in a couple of weeks for my birthday. Plan was to watch Messi destroy Leganes. Now all La Liga games are being played behind closed doors. Birthday ruined :(

Sorry, thought you were confirming that West Herts Trust includes Watford, not that the death was at Watford Gen.

She sent me a screenshot saying the game had been moved to the Sunday from the Saturday tbf. Which is steeped in irony as for my 30th 2 years ago we went to Barcelona to watch Barcelona play, without knowing that in Spain they can change the date of the game up to 2 weeks in advance - rather than the month it is here. So we had no idea the game had been moved and were out having a nice posh meal for my birthday unaware that Messi was currently banging in a hat-trick. The GF cried lots as she thought she'd ruined my birthday. This was supposed to make amends but it seems we're cursed!

I remember that story from before ! It sounds like she is cursed and needs to be replaced immediately. I went to Madrid to watch RM play Getafe as a treat from my then GF, now 2nd wife. It turned out she just wanted to see Beckham. Amusingly DB then announced he was leaving RM and they immediately dropped him for a number of games as they feared he would play with no motivation. After much GF panic, they recalled him before the game much to her relief !

Sad to hear about that gentleman and hope your Nan is ok @StuBoy .

Seems the owner of Nottingham Forst has the virus so now their players and those close to him are getting tested.

He also owns a Greek team who are playing Wolves this week in the Europa league.

So far whilst its mostly the elderly/underlying health conditions who are actually dying, the rate of hospitalisation is reported as around 20%. Even if most of those people ultimately recover and survive, its easily enough to cripple any health system

Lots of expert commentary suggesting that we're lagging two weeks behind Italy and apparently the reason we've not put harsher controls in place is that if we did it now, people would be bored in two weeks time and start ignoring them at the time when we need them most.

This is a really hard thing for any government to deal with, don't envy those making the decisions. The only thing I would say is that Trump's consistent downplaying of the virus and comparing it to regular flu is a new low, even by his standards. He's putting hundreds of thousands of lives at risk because of his constant desire to say he's the best at everything and it's all under control.

I was talking about this with my GP this morning. He mentioned that measures will start to be put in place in April - the first thing will be a 3 month ban on NHS staff taking holidays... then GP's surgeries will be divided into 'hot' (suspected covid19 infections) and 'cold' (all the usual GP stuff)...

He also mentioned that the Italian Health Service (in his opinion the best in Europe) is "...barely coping..."

Exactly. And the sudden enormous and unplanned for surge in people needing medical assistance will have knock on effects for treatment of other health issues, too; there are only so many beds, doctors and nurses to go around. Health systems aren't staffed to levels where they can cope with a sudden national surge in sick people requiring aid.

Quite. The NHS is basically operating at capacity already so we really need to hope we don't experience an outbreak as bad as Italy.

All that being said the rate of increase of cases in the U.K. has remained relatively flat and isn’t yet spiralling out of control like it did in Italy and China. Our cases are increasing at a rate roughly half way between the best and the worst scenarios, and this is without us having any significant measures in place. It’s also worth considering Italy have still tested less people than us but have more cases.

We may well be two weeks behind Italy, and cases may well start to spiral at some point, but equally the trajectory of our daily increase in cases is much flatter than Italy’s have ever been. I therefore think the government stance is entirely correct so far.
