I’d play Angelini for the rest of the season.
I’d even pick Bachmann knowing he’s worse (or equally as bad).

I just can’t stand having this simpleton playing anymore. There’s something incredibly galling about having to watch him flail around and then p1ss himself laughing about it whilst the fans have to suffer.

So plainly obvious his priorities in order:

    1) YouTube / Personality
    2) Cycling
    3) Football

Not sure I blame him at 38, idiotic to not have a young hungry goalkeeper in place this year. Bachman, Foster & Elliot is a horrible trio of keepers.

Probably why we got one for next season but be too late by then and will he still want to come to a Championship team.

Yes, he’s bottom of the Erividise right now. He’ll be here next season as will Louza, Kamara & Cucho. Unless they’re sent to Udinese of course.

Would love someone to tot up all the relegations our squad have experienced. Obviously we've got all the ones that went down with us two seasons ago but Foster has at least a couple more on his CV, Kucka was relegated last season with Parma, King and Gosling with Bournemouth, Cucho with Huesca and Mallorca, Rob Elliott with Newcastle, Cathcart with Blackpool, there are probably more.

I think Dennis and Louza were at Koln and Nantes when they won relegation play offs so at least they've experienced winning a relegation battle of sorts (even though I think those play offs are against teams from the division below).

They’re the ones I have any interest in us keeping whilst believing they will stay and building round. Wouldn’t mind seeing Samir & Sierrelta.

Joao Pedro staying would be a bonus but I see him becoming disenchanted with the disruption, need a whole new midfield. Zinc & TDB as squad options is okay too.

Bachmann is slightly more **** than Foster (somehow), but also slightly less of a tw*t that him so it is a tough choice.

What the hell was he doing for their goal yesterday? I didn't expect him to save it given how close it was but it looked like his footwork disappeared and he ended up almost dancing as the ball went past him.

His position for set plays is atrocious. He left 75% of his goal available for JWP for that FK at the end - not only that, but the gap he left was on the side of the goal that JWP was naturally always going to go for.

Hence why he was stood watching as it went inches over. He’d have been nowhere near it.

Don’t know if you heard the stat the commentators on the river I was enjoying brought out, but it was pretty incredible - of the 12 direct free kicks James Ward-Prowse has scored in his Premier League career, 3 of them have been against Ben Foster. A quarter of all fk’s Ward-Prowse has ever scored.

Judging by this comment, you've never played or been coached as a goalie.

The wall is set up to protect one side of the goal, so he relies on it so he can see the ball.

If he stands in the middle of the goal behind the wall, he can't see anything so can beaten either side as he won't be able to react in time, considering how close the wall is to him.

So he sets up his wall to protect one side....as all goalies do...as in...ALL goalies.

Plenty of You Tube videos you can watch.

That's what the wall covers. If he moves to his right the wall be between him and the ball so he can't see it

We have discussed at length this type of thing and it became clear in those debates that it was indeed yourself who had little idea of the realities of playing in goal.

I am aware that GK’s set up how you suggest, that wasn’t my point - which was pretty obvious. My point was he had the wall covering the bigger area that he had left (fair enough) but had it set up the wrong way around and only had the wall covering the section that JWP (widely accepted as the best FK taker in the PL at the very least) was always likely to go for. Therefore only requiring JWP to get it up and down over the wall to be a goal - this was clear by Foster not even moving. Why did Foster need to see the ball before it was hit - and then not even try and get across anyway? It’s a moot point in this instance.

Had Foster himself covered that angle, and set his wall the other side, he would have required JWP to have a more direct effort across him (which isn’t JWP preferred way of hitting FK’s).

In this case, seeing the ball before it was struck was secondary to the ability of the player taking the kick.

I’m sure Foster has his reasoning for why he did this - but they discussed it at length with Tim Howard and other people on US coverage and every single person agreed it was the wrong set up.

So maybe you think you know more than them - but I doubt you do! You’re wider point holds value sure, but it’s not something I denied. I was talking about this instance in particular and he got it wrong. So no…not ALL goalies. A GK should never set up his defenders and himself for the eventuality that the taker only need hit the target on one side of their goal to be a goal. That’s what Foster did. He essentially opened up the area JWP most likes to score from and dared him to see if he could hit it!

    As you were.

See my reply above. My point wasn’t about the amount of the goal he had left available. It was the side he decided to do it against the FK taker in question.

The wall always covers the near post or the side the free kick is taken from which is what Foster did. Every single goalkeeper would have set up the wall like that. The free kick was on the left side as you look at the goal. The wall is set up with player on the left end of the wall as you look towards the goal being in line with the post or just outside it. The part you mention about why does Foster need to see the ball I think is fairly obvious
Maybe this would have been better idea

    I don't get it?

If the wall was set on the other side, wouldn't that just give JWP a free unsighted shot at his favoured side?

If JWP whips it over the wall and under the bar from 19 yards its technical excellence.

A save in that respect goes into the save of the season bucket, therefore its a shot that is highly improbable to save.

The wall position is correct, so if Foster moves his starting position right he's now unsighted giving him less time to react which means he has to guess. Someone of JWP dead ball quality will know that and consider sticking it in the other corner. See FK 2 in this video, against....Foster

FK 3 - further out, same side as the one that went over Sunday. De Gea, starting position middle of the goal, ends up nowhere near it.

You could go through every single one of them, and there's only marginal errors from the GKs. Some try split walls to give better sight etc.

When it comes down to it the bloke can take a free kick, it's not bad goalkeeping, it's incredible technique. Only Beckham has scored more and he's on 12 with likes of Henry, Zola and one ahead of Ronaldo

But this is my point - it hasn’t been suggested that Foster shift the wall to the left AND stay where he is.

As I said, Tim Howard suggested on the coverage I watched that many GK’s will have alternate plans for specialist FK takers and not just conform to the usual set up and hope that a player of exceptional FK quality doesn’t, on this occasion, show that quality.

Basically ‘daring’ a player of JWP’s ability just to get it over the wall and under the bar from there is a huge risk. Yes, it’s a hard skill…but it’s one he has repeated time and again.

I agree with the standard set-up for average or below average FK takers (GK’s will have, just like for penalties, done their homework on these). But for the likes of JWP, the wall should have been shifted to cover the far corner, with Foster shifting his positioning. Yes it may have made him unsighted for the ball - but that has to be accepted for covering off the angle that JWP would obviously favour, and instead give him the more direct, longer route to the far corner, over the wall and having to eliminate his favoured ‘dip and whip’ technique.

Don't bother using a wall with JWP, just put everyone on the goal line.

I don't know Burnsy....confident as I was as a keeper I don't think I'd be of the mind to show him a clean sight of where he wants to stick it, feels like asking for trouble. Or am I missing your point? Reads like your suggesting move the wall to the right to cover the far side/Foster's left and show the FK taker the side of the goal the kick is being taken from? Essentially a different type of dare to the FK taker 'I know you want to stick it there, go for it and let's see who comes out on top' - or go the long route to the far corner

I’m saying Foster should cover towards his right hand corner (the one JWP went for) and position his wall more unconventionally to cover the other corner. This is what Tim Howard was suggesting GK’s increasingly are doing when faced with FK ‘specialists’. Setting up so as to deter the taker from doing what they are very skilled at doing and making them have a straighter, more distanced effort across goal. This would have been beneficial in the case of JWP on Saturday as his real skill is the whip he gets into the corner. If you cut that off with the GK covering more of that, you’re taking out his biggest attribute and asking him to put it in the other corner, whilst potentially also having a shallow runner able to run back and cover the post should be make that attempt.

I’m not saying it’s conventional in any sense. But it’s all about upsetting the rhythm of someone who is adept at set pieces and taking away their biggest strength in that situation. Essentially we set up in the manner of saying ‘If JWP can get this over the wall and under the bar, it’s a goal’ and you should never set up with that mentality, regardless of the takers ability.

But I’m happy to agree to disagree - I’m not sure there is an answer that’s 100% sure.

Fair points and maybe that is something it will evolve to in terms of putting in specific game plans for specific types of dead ball players.

I do think you're right that there's no silver bullet but there's definite merit in trying something different to disrupt the taker...still not sure I'd be brave enough to do it.

Makes perfect sense, the distance to the right hand corner was much further, and it’s not his natural corner he would have practiced aiming for 1000 times in training. The distance Foster has to cover from either side of the goal to get to the other is the same, yet positioning the wall on the right hand side would give him slightly more time to get across if it was on target, as well as that being less likely in the first place what with it being a longer distance, and probably less practised by JWP.
