As WTE is out on loan does he not retain his squad number in case he comes back for whatever reason?

Should the number 5 not be for a full-back?

    Close. 8 is a forward and 10 a CM.

    What about teams pre 442.

I seem to remember when you had inside forwards they were 8 and 10 and wingers were 7 and 11 ?Could be wrong of course.

So were the half backs midfielders or CBs ? Or some kind of hybrid between the two ?

In modern terms I would say 235 were defenders, 46 defensive MF, 7891011 were a mixture of ATM and Strikers. Probably in a kind of 352 formation.

I think Hoedt could be a smart signing for the Championship.

If he can pass both forwards and to someone in the same colour shirt that'd be an amazing start.

His welcome video made me smile though, surely no-one is that keen to come to Watford...

Will be the best CB at the club.

Which is more an indication of their ability, as opposed to his.

    Made a big impact yesterday.

The Reading bench still has the imprint of his backside.

That's the way I see it. But now we have midfielders with no. 5 on their shirts, centre forwards wearing 7 and all sorts. But it's only since numbers went all over the place that pundits have been saying things like "he's a true no. 6" etc. They seem to see it as a midfield role, but John McClelland, Glenn Roeder?

Having said that, Brazil traditionally had a back four numbered 2 3, 4, 5 and for a time in the early 70s Fulham copied that. A left back wearing no. 5 sometimes confused novice commentators and amused me.

Feel free to write me off as a pedantic old fart.

I quite liked when Holland/Argentina just went alphabetical, leading to midfielders wearing "1" and Keepers with "8".

Half backs were primarily ball-winning midfielders, like Hamza. Flair midfielders were "schemers" once upon a time.

"Schemers" is fantastic. Perfect for Jurado.

"Why does he never get assists?"

    "Busy scheming"

Centre half, no. 5, in the days when there was only one central defender.

Why are goalkeepers no longer called custodians?

As QSF once stated, the most talented player we will ever get to see at the Vic.
Criminally under-rated, the stats of zero assists and zero goals really don't reflect his contribution.
Would love to see his scheming stats. Off the scale one would imagine.
