Seen a few Belgian reporters and an Anderlecht fan page reporting that we’ve made an offer to sign Wesley Hoedt from Anderlecht on loan with an option to buy, and that he’s been dropped from their first team squad…

 

We wanted him when he was at Southampton I think so makes sense.

He was awful at Southampton but impressive at Lazio and has been an almost ever present in the Anderlecht line-up. He’s left footed, 28 and knows how the pass the ball. He seems to have had a falling out with the coach but can’t figure out why.

There are worse ideas. But if Mogi is involved that’s bad news regardless.

 

All for signing centre backs but as many have already said, this guy is rubbish

 

Probably perfectly capable at Championship level but not really aligned with the profile of player we've been after in this window.

 

Not convinced that the best way to evaluate a player is to look at how they played four years ago in the worst spell of their career. He was bad for Southampton but has impressed in Belgium but seems to have fallen out with the manager. He’s left footed, a really good passer and still 28.

For me, the main issue is if this is a loan. If it’s a loan then we’d have to exclude one of the six loanees (in addition to Hause) each week. Now for the right player that’s a problem I’d accept but I don’t think Hoedt would be worth that headache. Would much rather just bring him in on a perm for a nominal fee.

 

Agreed but presumably the issue behind this is wages? We can scrape together the cash to pay these players' clubs what they want for 6 months off the back of 2 years of parachute payments but can't afford to commit to longer term deals. Plus presumably the players themselves wouldn't be so keen on a permanent move to the Championship.

 

Not sure if Hoedt is an exception but I believe wages in the championship are generally higher than those in the Jupiler League.

 

More than capable at Championship level, was not great at Southampton but done okay at Lazio and has played frequently for Anderlecht.

While we're shopping in Belgium again we should be looking at Nicolas Raskin a Belgium U21 player. Only 6 months left on his contract and Rangers have had a bid declined. I've mentioned him before and don't understand why clubs are not pursuing him. A top player imo and was supposedly one to watch coming through the ranks in Belgium.

 

Time for some on here to adjust expectations - we are an English second tier club with no real money - Van Dijk is not on his way to Watford Junction and Rudiger likes Madrid

Yes - quality player. Has had a falling out at Antwerp but v good nonetheless and would be under £1m.

 

Even Belgium fans know that we’re mugs for wanting to sign him.

I’m not sure. A number of different Belgian outlets are reporting this independent of one another.

It could be that we’ve allowed Bayat to use our name in an attempt for another club to jump in, though.

If Bayat is involved then that’s bad news. But Hoedt has clearly performed fairly well in Belgium, even if he has had off field issues. He’s a 28 year old left footed progressive CB who would be dirt cheap. We could do a lot worse if we want a new left footed CB.

Anderlecht has almost no defenders left, but Wesley Hoedt still doesn't have to count on a chance to play minutes. That's what coach Brian Riemer said in the run-up to Sunday's game against Union.

Hoedt was removed from the selection at the end of last year because he had problems with his role on the bench. After Riemer had taken over the duties of interim trainer Robin Veldman, Hoedt trained again, but a return to the field is not yet possible. "Wesley's situation remains the same," said Riemer.

This reeks of Pozzo panicking at the end of the window and getting his buddy Mogi to help him out. He's sh!t the bed once again.

Why do you say that? Hause clearly isn't staying or won't be named in the squad at least, so we need a left footed centre back. Plus we're losing WTE and probably Pollock this window so they need replacing. On top of that we've been after Hoedt before.
