The agenda being pushed on the BBC "News" front page. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-63488070 I am sure these things happen but not to the extent where it needs to be a massive headline.
Interesting thread on the High Wycombe firebomber Andy Leak. https://twitter.com/rajanbasra/status/1588181921661857793?s=46&t=iOmsH0p4loGUwc78mwXEpQ
I think it’s right to paint the whole picture and the BBC usually splashes any investigation it does. Criminal gangs are a big problem here. This doesn’t let the Government off the hook. As the article says this is only a proportion of one third of the total of those crossing. The vast majority are genuine asylum seekers who could be processed without risk of small boat crossing if we chose to do that in France.
I think people trafficking is probably a good business to be in. I can see more and more people using their services to get into the country and avoid the queues at border control at UK airports that have become the norm since the introduction of passport checking machines that don't work
Paul Bristow, who's obviously a man if great intellect and integrity judging by his articulate use of emojis and aping the De Pfeffel 'look', complains that housing asylum seekers in a Peterborough city centre 'historic' hotel is wrong because... https://twitter.com/paulbristow79/status/1591134256356810752
It’s a good article and a terrible shame people are so desperate. We have labour shortages in certain areas of the economy. Seems like there is a temporary, legal solution that could be found for both the UK and people like him. But Nigel Farage wouldn’t like it.
https://twitter.com/Haggis_UK/status/1595362008072863746?t=U1tBASmNFpKZ7yuofcNoJQ&s=19 Nice of Suella to admit there's no safe and legal route to claim asylum in the UK (and fair play to Tim Loughton for asking that question!).
He did do a good job. I hope the committee will go further and conclude that the current ‘crisis’ is completely manufactured by the Government in an attempt to look tough on immigration.
Indeed. I could've sworn someone on here claimed that there were definitely safe and legal ways to travel here and claim asylum, but I guess the Home Secretary is wrong and he is right as always. Ah well, we live and learn.
Interesting report by Lewis Goodall on the protests outside hotels housing asylum seekers and other migrants. It’s not surprising that people who don’t have much will get concerned when they are told someone else is getting it for nothing. It’s the role of Government to provide for them and explain positively its actions. The Government has failed to do either, nor fix the issue of safe routes. Instead it has, undeniably, further politicised the issue. This is the outcome. On Twitter here to get a flavour. https://twitter.com/lewis_goodall/status/1628689559138566147?s=46&t=eJvsOOXYNBzLupdeP2F28w
Here's another one of those parody radio show videos that you guys love... "All those poor souls being treated abominably." The only difference being that they are in Rwanda rather than the UK. This guy is comedy gold. Six and a half minutes of absolute cope and fence sitting by proxy. His carefully crafted display of elitist snobbery and faux disgruntlement at people being sent to Rwanda in a very safe aeroplane, to live in well appointed houses, greeted by a country that wishes to make them welcome, and train them to be productive members of society. I can save you some time. To sum up this video, O'Brien says "I'm not a racist. I just think that Rwanda is a much worse place to live than racist, bankrupt, corrupt UK. Oh, and Braverman is a cackling white supremacist." I guess that to someone who can never muster a smile themself, that to see someone sharing a joke with other people must look like cackling. At least his cope is putting a smile on other people's faces now.
Well my flabber is gasted - apparently, all is not how it seems with the government's hotel/barges/tent schemes: https://twitter.com/lizziedearden/status/1640997431574769668
Well, well. It's almost as though the decision to use "ferries and barges" is just about the political agenda and not about saving money at all: https://twitter.com/alexwickham/status/1641028436373172225?t=QY7h3AFfdd5SK6891-7jJQ&s=19
Whooooooooooooooooooooooooops!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news...-to-support-key-claim-on-small-boat-crossings
Why is the BBC running a live text for the arrival of a barge in Portland? https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/uk-england-dorset-66104070 Report the story, absolutely fine. But does giving it that sort of rolling news treatment really make sense? Obviously a slow news day.
At least the arrival of the migrant barge might stop them droning on endlessly about the Windrush for a while
They were following the wrong boat https://twitter.com/skynews/status/1681320794390155264?s=46&t=dJMeIix2oCIhjphLJhwpfg far more newsworthy
They couldn't even wait for the relevant test results to come through before starting to board them. I'm sure (self) justifying Jenrick will blame someone else....anyone else.....is anybody out there?
A grand total of a massive 327 rulings from ECHR have gone against the UK this century. If ever there was a need to leave this undemocratic European establishment, this continuous and oh so regular meddling with the British judicial system must surely be it.
For "this century" read "in nearly a century" Been a member of this forum for a fair few years, still don't know how to edit from a phone.
The idea of leaving the ECHR is the Brexit Project, failing when confronted with reality, but just keeping on digging that hole.
They need to blame someone! Now they don't have the EU it has to be the ECHR or asylum seekers or some kind of WEF conspiracy....or some other "othering". Anything but accepting that we are a declining country with a woefully inept and corrupt government. It's so much easier to think it's all someone else's fault and, if we just got rid of "them", life would be good.
Tories to promise a referendum on leaving the ECHR? A 'let's get stopping the boats done and pack this lot off to Rwanda' vote to get the northerners on side at the next election
Not Northerners, is it. Plenty of knee-jerking 'would vote for a pile of manure with a blue rosette stuck in it' types round here!
Clearly someone at the Express has forgotten their audience: https://www.express.co.uk/news/politics/1804406/european-countries-with-most-asylum-seekers-map-spt Fact-based myth busting at its finest! I can’t wait for the blizzard of spidery letters to the editor from Indignant of Tumbridge Wells.
