Confused that there's unrest (admittedly on Twitter and driven by one person) about this. Deadline was yesterday. Club hasn't typically announced it immediately, it has generally been a few days later and sometimes only came through media reports. There's no requirement to publicise it. And it only affects a small number of players this year. I assume that they were rightly focused on the women's team being promoted. It's just more complaining for the sake of complaining, as opposed to focusing on something that matters as a grievance.
Yes - as I say we have 4 players out of contract of whom 2 at least will potentially get offered deals and a whole load of loans to go back. I think people are expecting us to release contracted players which we probably won't do unless it's someone like Gaspar.
Absolutely, at which point there will be griping that we are wasting money by paying/paying out players who won't then be playing football for us. I think the squad needs major work over the summer, and there is loads of uncertainty around a lot of players (including ones seemingly owned by Udinese whom we've thought of as ours, even if they really aren't), but this hostility about the list of players released seems to be about Cathcart and Cleverley, each of whom could sign a new contract with us anyway.
Sure this is slightly in jest but I doubt their intention is to purposefully antagonise a fanbase, what do they have to gain? Cathcart isn’t 56 yet mate.
That’s probably what drives it I guess because renewing Cleverley contract would be a catastrophic decision. This is our chance to stop him suckling at the teat, and if we don’t do it then Pozzo has learned nothing from his vast catalogue of mistakes.
Darren Witcoop(?) says Britt and Bacuna are on their way. Good news. https://twitter.com/DarrenOWitcoop/status/1660556718865100800?s=20
Not too bothered about any of this squad leaving, but I wouldn't have been against a one-year extension for Bacuna. Assuming he's happy to play a bit-part role and I thought he was OK.
Surprised that Britt won't be renewed, thought he'd shown enough to be a back up option, particularly as home grown. Bacuna was garbage though.
He's got enough quality still to be a backup Championship striker somewhere, but in a side whose strikers will have to do a lot of running, he's unlikely to fit, it might be a belated piece of good planning by us
Cathcart is a serviceable back up at this level. Provided the terms of the deal are right I dont really have an issue with it. Clevs getting renewed is hilarious but entirely expected.
Did cross my mind. Not necessarily that we couldn't afford him per se, more that he'll be wanting a certain level of contract as a senior pro with not many pay days left and we might have a lower budget for a 3rd/4th choice attacker.
Am I right in thinking Myles Roberts' contract is up this summer? Had an impressive loan at Welling, Manager's Player of the Season, and most 'Goals Prevented' (https://twitter.com/Vanarama/status/1660647478583083013?s=20) by miles (myles) in the division. 6th tier, but a decent showing. 21 now, so worth extending and trying for a League 2 loan?
At the halfway point of the season I wouldn't have been against keeping Cathcart, but he's fallen off a cliff, and if we are going to be playing a style of football which requires a high line, Cathcart isn't going to be suited to that (nor are any of our CBs really, but that's by the by as none of them are about to become free agents!)
The whole team did to be fair. Even decent players like Joao looked pretty poor towards the end. I am sure age is a factor but so is playing for a rank side. Agree with a lot of that though. To be clear - I am not advocating for him to be renewed. I just struggle to object too much if he is given, for example a 1 year deal and is our 4th choice.
Twitter crew getting in a right state over the lack of a retained /released list being made public . Not just Uncle Ron getting angry now.
Don't really get that myself, they don't have to do it immediately, I'd guess it's because we're still negotiating with our out of contract players. Of course, you are entitled to your own opinion of Cleverley and Cathcart getting contract renewals!
I’ll get pelters but I actually think Cleverly would be good in an Ismael team (whether he can stay fit or not is another question). He’s pretty much only good at running around, pressing like a headless chicken and getting the ball forward quickly, which is pretty much what we’ll be doing. Loves the club and is a good bloke too, which is more than can be said about half the team.
It’ll have already been submitted to the EFL. It’s a meaningless list. We could say we’re releasing everyone one day and re-sign them the next.
He was good at running around. I don’t think we’ve seen him go faster than walking pace without getting hurt in the past 24 months. Time to let go. The money he likely earns/wants needs to be spent on somebody capable of being more than a good egg in the changing room, particularly when that good egg has already been there through the demise of our squad mentality and hasn’t been able to avert the steady match towards shambles-town.
Anyone who genuinely thinks we should renew the contract of 34 year old, bow legged, permacrock Cleverley is a complete fool. It's really that simple. It's exactly the complete polar opposite of the direction this club now needs to take. Jesus, I know our fans can't let go, but try living in reality for a change and f**king move on.
