    Team USA in SA 2010.

    Shall we discuss?

We US Soccer fans have no reason to expect success.
    But still...there is always hope.

Seeing as you were here when Doyley scored perhaps you should go to South Africa for the game, then I might just be a little worried!!!

With your "Midas Touch" the USA might just get lucky ;)

I would have thought that the the US are favourites to finish second in our group. Will be interesting to see how well DeMerit does, if he plays.

How quickly we forget. Last summer with Demerrit in defence against Xavi, Fabregas, Alonso, Riera, Mata, Torres & Villa. Final score? Spain 0 USA 2. That's Spain, the European Champions and World ranked no 2.

Those of you thinking we will walk over this USA team really need a reality check, we'll be lucky to win, fortunate to get a point IMO.

Obviously not as quick to forget as some ;). He has been utter dog shyte since he came back from the eye injury.
Granted he had a very good summer 09, but form is temporary and he has no class.
An all singing and dancing England attack will run Jay ragged.

I would be suprised to see the USA repeat their Confederations cup performance. They'll finish 2nd in the group behind England, IMO of course.

    England should win.

England should win handily. I'll say 3-0.

The second worst (in my opinion) USA World Cup performance ever was in 2006 which featured a gutsy 1-1 draw against World Cup Champion Italy, which ended 9 men vs 10 men. The Champs couldn't beat a broken crappy team.

You never know what will happen.

USA's attack is a big question mark right now. There was great chemistry with Charlie Davies up top and Landon Donovan & Clint Dempsey in the mid, but Davies' terrible (and stupid) car accident has pretty much tossed that away.

I really have no idea who will be up top for the USA at this point.

Fortunate to get a point? Bit of a strange comment, that's like saying Man Utd would be fortunate to get a point against Porstmouth or something. I expect to win all of our group games.

OK, let's see some stats. England's first game in all recent Finals.

    2008: DNQ
2006: Beat Paraguay 1-0 by the skin of our teeth
    2004: Lost 3-2 to France
    2002: Drew 1-1 with Sweden
    2000: Lost 3-2 to Portugal

Even in 1990, our best World Cup since 66, we drew our first game with Ireland 1-1. Those of you who say it's a formality against the USA are in for a wake up call ;).

These are my thoughts too. Its very rare that a team wins all three of their group games and this is going to be the most difficult. If they can prevent Torres and Villa from scoring, then they are capable of stopping Rooney, Crouch etc. Hope i'm wrong though.

Let me build mine up a bit before the game and I'll bet the lot that England don't win.

I usually play down England's chances but I do think a win is on the cards.

It's not *****ing up that will be the hard part, as England usually do.

England did qualify with the 2nd most wins (9) and points (27). They also have the most goals (34) and goal difference (+28) in the European zone.

I have a good feeling for USA in the group stages, lets not forget that compared to England, the other 3 are "underdogs", therefore the pressure will be on us to win, not the other 3. And with it being the big stage..even the smaller teams will raise their game against us.

    Cant wait!

The pressure maybe on but these players are used to pressure every week playing for their clubs. It will be close but they should win.

And in 1966 I believe we stated with a bore-draw 0-0 against Uruguay, but still won the thing - not that I'm saying that that will happen this time, especially now that the traditional injury crisis has kicked in.

But though Fitz is an excellent, balanced and well-informed person and I wish him well, I should hate to see the USA win the World Cup. If Americans started to get interested and start punching their economc and demongraphic weight, I can foresee four 25-minute periods with more advertising breaks, roll-on roll-off subs, bigger goals and all the other things you could do to generate more revenue and produce higher scores. Sky and their chums will probably bring that about anyway, but the Yanks would do it quicker.

Cue Fitz to reassure me that no sensible Americans will follow our poxy little sport when they've got really exciting stuff like gridiron to follow.

    yanks 0 slovenia 0
    yanks 0 algeria 1
    yanks 0 england 3

but with algeria and slovenia going into administration and receiving a 10 point deduction the yanks will sneak through the back passage, in the shytey way that only yanks can.

I reckon they should put tiger woods up front, he has a solid scoring track record.:sign15:

    Entirely possible Paddy.

I think the most likely result is England finishing with 9 points and USA finishing with 6 points after group stages.

The second most likely is England finishing with 7 points and USA finish with 1 point.

Good one about Tiggy. He's definitely a guy who can get it in the hole.

Americans faithful to soccer like the game to be played just the way you do, which does indeed vex and bedevil the TV Sports establishment. MLS tampered with gameplay at first and the changes were overwhelmingly rejected.

I completely understand and agree with you about our relative minnowdom. It makes things exciting when USA does well as we are, and wouldn't be fair to the rest of the world if all we played was football.

Many of you probably don't know who these guys are but if you do, imagine this lineup:

    ---------Kobe Bryant-----------Lebron James----------

    ----------------------Dwayne Wade---------------------

    Terrell Owens----------Chris Paul-----------Allen Iverson

    Reggie Bush----Dwight Howard----Charles Woodson---Michael Vick

    ---------------------Kevin Garnet-----------------------

    Coach:Mike Krzyzewski
