Very pleased with the win tonight. Must've been very unsettling for the squad with all the fuss surrounding Mariappa and Sordell prior to the match but to have put in a battling away performance like that is very impressive. Hopefully we can keep the momentum rolling on to Saturday!
Twas indeed Doris who took it. Cracking result tonight, well pleased with that and a clean sheet as well.
How did Murray and the new lad get on? It's a great win for us. 9pts clear of the relegation zone now. Hopefully Dyche will continue with the policy of the last 2 games and keep playing the players with pace, giving us a threat going forward. How did Hogg and Eustace link up?
They linked very well, jobs made easier when you have two mobile wingers either side of you. Everyone really put a shift in... but lets not mention a major fark up by someone to give away the penalty :dismay:
And that someone was Doyley. He should have put the ball out but Marquis would have been clear to shoot if Loach hadn't gone for it. Both Mapps and Nyron were tearing him a new a-hole.
As pays said, when you have two wingers like we did having two 'sitters' is fine, they were both awesome. New signing looked very tidy considering it was his first game and he'd only just joined. Defence superb, Hendo barely got a sniff. We settled on the lead a bit at HT then completely at 2-0 and defended a constant barrage, but did it exceptionally. Sign a winger and 1/2 forwards, one who is decent in the air and one with pace - including the winger, and we're looking fine imo. P.S, Millwall were dreadful. Route 1 attack: out to Feeney, overlap, read my L/RM, crosses it, blocked or cleared. Route 2: Up to Hendo.
Just got back, pissed as a fart, Hoggy was immense as usual as were Nosworthy & Mariappa. Deeney & Garner deserved their goals, long may it continue, played them off the park, support was fantastic.
Hodson was fantastic put some brilliant crosses in, Murray was brilliant once again. A 20 year old and an 18 year old playing down the same side not many championship clubs could do that.
just got back, good trip, good atmosphere, and possibly best view of a game ive had since i last went to milwall away. Everyone put a real shift in today, defence looks unbeatable when attacked through the middle, but we dont seem capable of getting the first punch or head on any cross that comes into the box. A problem that we didnt get punished for today, but did 3 times at birmingham and really needs to be addressed somehow. New guy looked pretty good, wouldnt have known he had only met his team mates yesterday. Not having yeates in the team makes us far better regardless of how many assists he may have given us. Hodson and murray were spot on, as were most the team tbh. However, despite his well taken goal, i still dont think deeney has anywhere near the quality to be a regular starter in the champsionship. He woefully missed a number of chances, so badly that I think two went out for throw ins. He tries very hard, has a good name to shout from the stands, but doesnt have the quickness of thinking or the clinicalness needed.
I disagree, Deeney like Garner is still a young man learning his trade, he'll never be a 20 goal a season striker but is more than capable of getting us 15 goals a season if given time to develop and a proper run up front.
Deeney has a lot of good qualities, but finishing is not one of them and never will be I'm afraid. If he ever gets into double figures for Watford in the Championship, I will be truly amazed.
I remember a striker who we signed from Southend that we converted to a winger for a while to plug gaps who never quite looked like he would do it but always gave a 100% whilst wearing the shirt and he worked out okay...
Sordell's departure may well be beneficial. Our play this year was very much focused around him, and due to his inexperience, he often didn't get into game. Perhaps now we'll see a lot more of what Garner has to offer, and also see Deeney step up as a regular up front.
didn't go but this is a summary from a Wall fan: Watford last night were exactly how Id like Millwall to play. Tackled , chased and hassled us out of the game and created a good few chances in front of goal. Sometimes you have to accept it when you've been well beaten and last night was one of those nights. Poorest performance since Watford last season when they did exactly the same to us. Well done to the team and those that went...it was bleedin' freezing
Deeney can do a bit of everything, his technique is average but being able to do every part of the game pretty well is a very good attribute. However I agree we need a quick winger who can also play up front and a ST who can hold it up, and can play 90 minutes, i.e not Emu.
Chuffed with the win, well done lads! It looks to me that Murray and the new lad out wide are very comfortable on the ball and have great footballing brains which is why they will be more beneficial to the team than Forsyth. Very excited to see how they perform over the next few games, but would have liked to see Winchelow gettin bled into the team with them. Great performance anyway, I honestly think we will push on from here
Deeney seems fairly ungainly given his size, but he's not bad on the ball I reckon. Anyone remember his ridiculous outside of the boot pass for Graham's goal against Swansea last year?
Yeah he's not awful technically but it's a bit hit and miss e.g. his finish was class technique but the one that went out for a throw and the cross 2nd half where he just smashed it into the stand. But yeah just average, not bad.
When Watford boss Sean Dyche marched purposefully onto the pitch of his old Den stamping ground to give a clenched fist salute to the 600 travelling fans, he had to break his stride to emotionally engage his central defence giant Adrian Mariappa. Dyche, a one time Millwall defender, had seen Mariappa break Millwall hearts on the way to a crucial 2-0 away win that broke three consecutive Championship defeats. It left Millwall dangling over the precipice again, directly above the relegation zone. But much more important, Mariappa had single mindedly shrugged off the disappointment of a deadline day transfer failure as moved to the Premier League with Wigan and then Newcastle, broke down. He could easily have taken the same way out as England Under 21 striker Marvin Sordell who was removed from the Watford side within two hours of kick-off at the request of owner Laurence Bassini as first Cardiff and former Hornets boss Malky Mackay bid £3million and then Bolton gazumped them with a better offer. Instead Mariappa defied a bitterly cold night at the New Den while goals from Troy Deeney and Joe Garner left Millwall with their fourth defeat in six games and a fifth setback at home this season. Watford won tbhis fixture 6-1 last season. Dyche, with a voice that sounded like his throat had been raked with sandpaper, croaked: 'Adrian has had a hell of a lot going on in his head today - none of it his own making, let me make it clear. 'So to come out and lead a defensive performance like he did speaks volumes of him as a person and a professional player. He was immense in everything he did. I'll tell you one thing, he was exceptional. To see someomne have a day like that with people ringing him, friends ringing him, agents ringing him and then face what he had to, shows what he is - an immaculate professional." And with the deadline ticking towards the close, Dyche added: "I want to lock him in a cupboard and turn all the phones off!" Millwall were simply dreadful, obsessed by playing just one way, getting the ball out wide to sling in centres that Mariappa and his central defence partner Nyron Nosworthy were happy to head away all night. And even when Millwall did fashion a scoring chance, former Watford striker Darius Henderson headed wasstefully high. Henderson did have a chance to redeem himself in front of the travelling fans with a late penalty given away by Watford keeper Scott Loach - but to the delight of Watford's Henderson baiters his spot kick was weak and easily saved by Loach to his left. Watford new boy Alex Kacaniklic had a hand in both goals, putting in Deeney to rifle the ball inside the right post in the 35th minute before having a shot that was half saved by Tony Forde, only for Garner to stab in the rebound on 58 minutes. Millwall boss Kenny Jackett groaned: "We were flat, didn't take the game to them, didn't do enough. Two poor goals, the second from when Lloyd Doyley made a run from left-back and got inside three of our players. We didn't have a player to go past someone."
It will be interesting to see if we can capitalise on this win and at least get a point off Barnsley.
just seen the highlights on hornets player. great finish by deeney, calm finish by garner. great save by loachy first half, shouldnt have given away the penalty but a good save there too.
Lovely goal by Deeney, Garner scored a nice poacher's goal but missed a lot of other chances, with a bit of match sharpness he could have had a hattrick, Murray and Kaka looked good, Loach was excellent
I've seen the highlights a few times now - anyone else think that Doyley's pass to Alex K in the build up to the second goal was unintentional? I think he was lining up to shoot and it hit his standing leg :]]
