Commentator in the man u game was like "you can understand why the Manchester United players are playing below par given the circumstances". What, all the foreign players? And "most of the talk at half time wouldn't have been about the events on the pitch I suspect". I suspect it probably was. That and complaining that their weekends game might be off.
I’m hearing the games this weekend may be called off. Either that, or they will go ahead as planned. More when I hear it. #onetowatch
Point taken. TBH, I was just quite pleased to have remembered who recorded it, given my advanced age.
Seen a few stories that because of the timing of the announcement, that Day 1 of OLB is going to be tomorrow. Which would make Monday the day of the funeral. But I imagine they will want it on the Sunday as it will mean they won’t have people off work etc etc
When the kings died in 1936 and 1952 matches went ahead just a few days later. When Diana died they cancelled the Premier League televised game that afternoon but league matches went ahead in midweek. The funeral was on the Saturday so the programme of matches was moved to the Sunday. It’s possible to pay respects and carry on with life. I mean, cancel the football at the weekend and/or next week as a mark of respect but does it mean everyone else who has to carry on with their work in the coming days is being disrespectful? Most people won’t get their work cancelled but they will have their leisure activities cancelled. It’s disproportionate.
And that’s without mentioning those who have paid for travel/accommodation and can’t get refunds for this weekend’s matches.
So, so frustrating. How it’s thought that this is the best way to handle it is beyond me. Cancelling the only bit of joy many get on the weekend. Really? Surely a minutes silence is sufficient.
Whether people like it or not, a period of national mourning is in the fabric of nearly every country. It not unique to the UK or the Queen. I'm no royalist and I'm not suggesting anyone who isn't should be - but at most, its a week of no sport. I'm sure people can manage with that ultimately. We get through International breaks easily enough! I don't think a minutes silence for a someone who was Head of State for 70 years is nearly sufficient personally.
FFS Burns. If you want to go on a personal journey of grief for the next 2 weeks then be my guest. Just leave me out of it! Take 2 weeks off work and knock yourself out by all means.
Well no, absolutely not. Hence the upcoming procession of her casket from Scotland to London, her lying in state for 9 days and then a state funeral which will be marked by a national holiday and likely various shops, services etc closed.
To be quite honest with you, the Royal Family can do whatever the **** they want if they chip in to refund costs for this weekend, pay for the rearranged fixtures with a bit of beer money chucked in, it's not as if they're not rich enough!
Some might question that at times. Be right to cancel this weekend but carry on afterwards as @EnjoytheGame says.
No sorry mis read it ! Got a point - infact the postal and rail strikes are off so more people will be working now .
I respect the Queen but honestly just don’t see the relevance to be honest, as awful as some may think that sounds. Agree to disagree I guess.
Completely. If you want or need to grieve an unelected head of state, go for it, but please don't enforce it on everyone.
I agree with the premise and its kinda my point of view as well - I just disagree that showing a large sign of respect automatically equates to 'grieving'. I'm not a royalist, and I won't be 'grieving' for someone I didn't know, never met and who never knew I existed. But I do think it's right that things stop for a period to show respect for her role and service. It could equally be said that not stopping isn't showing that respect and 'continuing on' with things is being forced upon people who think more respect should be shown? I'm not saying I'm one or the other - but there's 2 sides to this.
I can completely see that. It's more the forced nature I have a problem with. Company I work for is Dutch and down the pub after work some of them were saying how weird it was. A head of state is just there, it's all about how the media portray them. The Dutch media don't make a fuss about their royals and such an event would pass most by. The British media splash the royals in front of us at every turn. If you dialled that down over a few years, people wouldn't react anything like this.
What a ludicrous decision. Banning sports for 10 days. I think there is an over estimation of her value. The UK is in a recession and sports is one outlet of joy for many. Two minute silence at the games would have been enough. What a bloody stupid idea to ban sports due to her passing.
