I strongly suspect that fripperies like professional football will be postponed if and when she goes, as well as on the commemoration day/s.
I think sporting events in the country are cancelled for at least a week as part of the "mourning period"
Didn’t they go potty when Princess Diana died? Seem to remember at least a week of no sporting events?
Let's hope this discussion is hypothetical, but in the days of mourning following King George VI's death football matches were not cancelled, although the national anthem and "Abide with Me" were sung before games (according to wiki). By way of confirmation, WFC lost 3-0 at Exeter City on 9 February 1952.
Operation London Bridge, all sporting events would be cancelled. I’m supposed to be going on Saturday (first game in a while). Hang on in there Queenie
I think we play Plymouth in mid week but that was only “League One” so probably not seen as that important! I remember Scotland were going to play a World Cup qualifier on the day of her funeral but they had to move to after much debate .
Updated the thread title but I doubt we will be playing our next game either. Makes sense - it's a time of sorrow and we don't need to be even more depressed with Watford playing badly.
So all of weekend's games are going to be off, but the Hammers about to kick off in 10 mins tonight? BT Sport pundits currently talking solemnly about the fact Fabianski is being rested in funeral suits in front of a black background. And although the game is on the advert breaks are just calm music with black background as they don't want to risk a jolly advert popping up! Sad that the Queen has died, but the way this is handled is going to be unbearable isn't it?
Some people rely on this forum for official updates, (not me) so I don’t think you should update the title until it’s confirmed. Currently the EFL says it will discuss the weekend’s fixtures with the government.
They carried on when Prince Phillip died . And I remember what is now League one clubs played mid week (we played Plymouth away ) and on the Sunday after Princess Di’s funeral as Elton John was a guest at the Wycombe game so might not be off yet. Sunderland could be moved to the Sunday I guess ?
If I had to guess, I reckon there will be no football (or sport really) between now and the funeral. Might get next weeks European fixtures being played because UEFA likely to insist on it. I'd be staggered if any sport happens this weekend for sure - Test match, football....will all fall by the wayside I suspect.
Yeah maybe - I guess the World Cup will be a consideration too given they are already squeezing games in. Cancelling another 2-3 would be difficult to reschedule. I dare say they will be lead by what others tell them to do.
It’s really a political question. Hence asking the government. Bump it up to Truss and she can weigh the odds. Carry on and piss off one bunch of weirdos, postpone everything and piss off another bunch of weirdos. It’s tough at the top.
Some bloke has completely taken off at LouOrns on Twitter for not wanting postponements this weekend. "Disrespect of the highest regard". Not sure what that even means to be honest.
Thank god she can't pass the responsibility to Nadine Dorries anymore. She'd cancel another sports fixtures by mistake.
I'm still not following the BT sport format of not showing adverts in case they are too jolly, but then happy to broadcast a load of fans going mental when Ronaldo headed in only to be denied by offside flag.
Golf/Cricket/Horse Racing have only cancelled Friday activity. Would be surprised, for example, if they abandoned the entire PGA Championship, rather than restarted Saturday after showing suitable respect.
While it buggers up my weekend plans it could work in our favour. Formation needs work and we need Sarr and ideally Louza fully fit.
"A determination regarding the remainder of this weekend’s scheduled fixtures will be made following a review of the official mourning guidance" Christ.
