As long as he needs to get his mojo back. Whatever your opinions on resting him, it is obvious he isn't the player that started the season.
You're probably right given the number of games left we can't afford to rest him too much. But rest doesn't just serve a physical purpose, does it? To me, he looks shot of confidence and yet is often having to start games and share the pressure of leading our attack and getting us in the lead in games. In an ideal world I'd be looking to bring him off the bench with the team leading and give him licence to run at a tiring opposition. At 20 it's understandable that things that shouldn't affect a seasoned pro are weighing him down a bit.
Pretty much how I see the problem. Trouble is that Deloufeu is out and Carillo isn’t performing well so Richarlison is the only option.
Exactly, Deeney is not a lone front man. But that bolded part is simply not true at all: Man City - lone striker - Aguero Man Utd - lone striker - Lukaku Liverpool - zero strikers - floating front three Spurs - lone striker - Kane Chelsea - lone striker - Morata Arsenal - lone striker - Auba or Lacazette Burnley - lone striker - Barnes (also hardly a £100mil man) Leicester are basically the only top half team who often start with two up top. Brighton have also been over-performing recently by playing a 34 year-old Glenn Murray as a lone front man
I always try to just enjoy the now. That's what is most important. Yes Troy was fairly poor by his standards, but at least he's firing now. Karnezis had a very shaky start to life at Watford (to put it mildly) but now looks class. Mariappa has grown from bit player to impressive performer. Hughes couldn't get near the squad back in August and September but now looks essential. Others sadly have done the opposite and gone from looking like worldbeaters to also rans. Richarlison springs to mind, but at least we know what he's capable of, and hopefully he will find form again. Even our last Head Coach looked an amazing appointment until Everton came calling. I don't like the man anymore than most do on this forum, but will credit him for the 26 points he was in charge for once our survival is confirmed. Only when the season is over can we really assess how each player has performed over a full campaign. For now I'm enjoying the 4 points Troy has won us over the past week. Yesterday's was a very confident, assured finish and it's nice to see.
Great post. I don't think it's a bounce as we know the players are capable, I think it's a case of installing a bit of confidence and playing to the strengths of the players available and keeping it simple. Although I thought Capoue had a mixed afternoon, it was clear to me he'd been instucted to sit in front of the back 4 and protect them, and he was disciplined in that...he was just a little lacksadaisical a few times which put us in trouble. I watched Rondon, who apart from his finishing gave our defence a really hard time, his running into channels, winning headers and bullying defenders is what Troy used to do and yesterday we saw more of that than we have done all season. That was my criticism of him earlier in the season...he stopped doing that. Okaka in his cameos has done exactly that which is why we tend to look better when he comes on. This maybe unpopular but I think Rondon would actually do well for us. If we consider Arsenal a free hit, then I'd like to see Deeney and Okaka start, even if we get 60 minutes out of Okaka - Arsenal look brittle, so attack from the off - like we did last season and see what happens.
'Oh I don't think he's referring just to them, more all dairy producers'. 'Blessed are the meek,oh I'm ever so glad they've got something.'
By the way, Mr Cheeseman was the Welsh guy in Dad's Army. He appeared in the second series. The one with the goofy teeth who worked as a photo-journalist.
Carrillo is a frustrating player. I've seen him waltz through about 4 players with ease, and yet 95% of the time he's a passenger because he's too busy daydreaming I've lost count of the amount of times he's received the ball this season without once looking who's closing him down. He's obviously confident with the ball at his feet, but hasn't figured out yet that you get closed down quickly in this league. Still as a backup player (which he should be) we can't grumble too much. Certainly don't see us taking up the option to buy him.
Dad’s Army was mainly filmed in Norfolk. Was this a coded message for Eastcoasthorn? Edit: just seen the Yeatman revelation. On balance, probably a message for a Mr Cheeseman.
Sorry I don’t agree, these teams were playing a lone striker in a 4-2-3-1 but most have moved to 3-4-3 or 4-3-3 this season. Spurs do, Liverpool don’t, Chelsea play 3-4-3, Arsenal 3-4-3, Man u have started 4-3-3 with Sanchez and Martial/Rashford wide of Lukaku. City play with basically one holding and five attackers. Burnley play 2 when wood is fit. Brighton might be the only other one but often play Hemed with him. Granted 4-4-2 is few and far between these days. This was a trend but thank god teams are moving away from it because we’ve lost the art of strike partnerships in the game and it’s worse for it.
The quite extraordinary Talfryn Thomas, who had made quite a reputation as a go-to all round oddball in sitcoms before being drafted in to DA midway through
I've realised that it's the terminology I've got a problem with, not the 'Richarlison not playing' bit. When other players are sh!t, we drop them. Gray, Deeney, Amrabat, Britos, Holebas (the list goes on) have all had people calling for them to be dropped as they're playing sh!t, but Richarlison 'needs a rest'. F*ck that. If he's sh!t, drop him. Why sugarcoat it?
It depends how closely & quickly the #9 gets support. Aguero often has 4-5 supporting attackers. Barnes seldom has any but scoring is seemingly incidental to Burnley’s mid op. An effective solus 9 needs outstanding movement (Ag & Kane) or superhuman strength (Lukaku). These don’t come cheap.
We've played much better this season (Chelsea away springs to mind) than we have in the last two games and lost. Gracia's 'hard to beat' 'nick a scruffy 1-0' Watford is just what we needed to become. Both Everton and WBA are games we could easily have lost under Silva (see Palace and Swansea) so two wins from two is fantastic. Great to see Troy hitting form just in time to **** Arsenal again.
After Carrillos little tantrum and slow walk off the pitch he can **** off. Still throwing a wobly about his buddy getting the boot.
Not sure about Rondon, as I don't think he's an obvious upgrade on Deeney or Okaka, although I do like his desire and attitude towards the team. If I look at cherry-picking from West Brom it would only for their defensive players. Dawson is not a bad shout, but I'd also like to have Gibbs and Foster. You could see Gibbs' value yesterday. Cleared one off the line, created their only gilt edge chance and stood firm to block Pereyra's goal bound shot early in the game. Evans obviously, but I think he'll go to a much bigger club and City will probably be back in for him in the summer. Our wing backs are generally poor. Yesterday was a much better performance from Janmaat and Holebas, but even in an improved performance there were problems. Janmaat got beaten far too easily for West Brom's early chance which Mapps deflected over. Watch the clip again on MotD and I think he get done about three time in the same move. Holebas keeps too deep which kept Rondon onside where he went through and shot against Karnezis' leg. Also Holebas was in no-man's land when Gibbs crossed a good ball in for Rondon to header wide. Holebas made no attempt to challenge him, only flinched a little, a bit like Amrabat for that Can Liverpool goal last season. It was weak and I don't think you can totally eradicate this type of thing from their game.
Is it just me or is this song simply about going out and finding someone to ****? Hopefully the kids don’t pick up on the lyrics.
I was critical of Deeney, and I don't think even his most ardent supporter can deny he wasn't doing enough. The big frustration is that if he actually took more shots, he'd likely be hitting the back of the net far more often. Sounds obvious, but it's backed up by his stats. Deeney hits the target 45% of the time, Kane as a comparison does so 41% of the time. I think its probably a confidence thing, and you sense with Troy he's his own worst critic. He needs to become more selfish, and the last two games he's looked far more like the clinical Troy we saw in the Championship.
The "3" up top typically played by the top 6 (whether part of a 3-4-3 or 4-3-3) is no different from what we've been doing with Richie and Deulofeu/Carillo either side of Deeney. I literally just looked at every Burnley starting lineup this season - Burnley have only twice this season started with two up top, and those two were Barnes and Vokes. They started one other match with Vokes up top and Barnes left wing. Wood has only ever started as a lone front man (and he's never started a match with Barnes or Vokes). "Often"? Murray and Hemed have never even started a single match together lol.
This again..... Yes he needs resting as he's not playung well. Resting. Dropping. Same thing. I find it ridiculous that an out of form player keeps playing every week.
I like Carrillo, but I have to agree with you. It was not an action of someone who was trying to help the team. All players get subbed for tactical reasons. It's common it the modern game. To walk off that slowly when the score was still 0-0 is irritating. I remember Holebas did that earlier this season as well. Carrillo has good quality in his feet, but was a bit limp and feeble yesterday. Too weak in the challenge. What I like about him is how he moves the ball quickly and intelligently in the build up. He was involved in the move by passing quickly to Pererya which fed Janmaat, and only a brilliant save from Foster denied Watford a goal. Carrillo is not a player who Watford will spend £15m on in the summer though. He's not worth that type of fee, but something around £7-8m would be a reasonable fee, and I'd be happy if signed permanently for that.
A good one will at least provide decent movement, which is what Deeney doesn't do. I don't believe Gray is really good enough either for what we should be aspiring for, but our best performances this season have still come when he has started and stretched the opposition defences with his running, creating space for others. Murray, Vardy and Barnes all do the job well but didn't cost the earth. I also think Okaka offers more than Deeney as a lone front man, but unfortunately he can't last a full 90.
Just seen Motd. They did a good job of polishing that terd of a match. Gibbs looked like a world beater, and I don't remember west West having that many chances. I somehow missed richarlisons overhead kick, even though I didn't leave my seat apart from at half time. Okakas turn and shot was ace for the second match in a row. The ****wits in the studio saying they never thought Watford would go down. Lying ****s!
