It wasn't long ago that I vowed never to have adverts on this site, as I've always hated the way most forums or club related sites seem to be awash with them, much to the detriment of the content, (PTV sites being a prime example). However, due to the popularity of this place we can see that before the end of this year we're probably going to need a more robust host, with plenty of bandwidth and reliability, and those cost more than the cheapa55 host we're currently using. Money coming in will also allow development of the forums and secure it's future. Depending on how much, (or little), we raise, it could give us the opportunity to give some real £££ prizes for some of the long running and excellent competitions instead of 'Orns. That's the plan anyway, so here's how it will work. We're using "Google Adsense", this works by analysing the content of each page and delivering adverts to suit the content of that particular page. Ads will be placed in line with the forum layout, after the last post on every page. These ads will ONLY appear in threads, and they are text only. We've been testing them over the last couple of days and we all think they work well without being too intrusive. They're still an experiment though, and if we find that YOU don't like them or they cause big problems then they're gone. They will be activated later tonight, but please don't think you need to go clicking links to help us, quite the opposite. Just use them as you would any other advert, if you notice something that interests you go for it, if you don't then ignore it. We will NEVER encourage anyone to click an advert for any other reason than for real interest. Opinions appreciated
About time. good luck with it. I only ever click on ads for viagra and saga insurance these days tho.
As long as I can still spend my days chatting up Miss Faith and posting rubbish about photocopiers and lifts, I'll go along with what ever you think Bloke-in-Charge.
We can see them already, and the one's in your photocopier thread are absolutely spot on :]] For the record ALL money raised will go towards the forums in one way or another, and if that means more boozy nights for the forum staff and myself then so be it
Only ever click any ad that you really are interested in or appeal to you. Money is earned in many ways, and by only using the links you like we streamline what Google shows for better revenue. Fake clicks are soon spotted by Google and not paid on anyway. We're still finalising the testing. They should appear tonight sometime. So do we, so that's exactly why we've gone for the relevant ads that are text based and fit in with the current scheme.
Ads to suit the content of the thread? Sounds hilarious. Watch out for a rush of eclectic threads.:]]
Some today have caused me to spit out coffee. Some threads will definately be geared to see what the ads offer, it's already been predicted by the mods. At least we have a new game when there's an international week
Not sure I get the question Wurzel, but we're totally unsure of what to expect in revenue. It's impossible to guess because Google keep some things very close to their chests.
Not intrusive at all, to be honest I did not even notice them at first, I only noticed them when one of the posts said they were already showing, even then I had to make a special effort to look for them. If that is all they are going to be, then go for it mate and I hope you even make a small profit for your efforts, rather than plowing it all back into the site!!! Just one reservation, the links are all safe I take it?
Should be. If we find any exceptions we can block them in future. If you just see a blank yellow box then it's because either... 1. There is not enough on the page for Google to target or 2. The page hasn't been read by the google adsense bots
Since all the posts on here are about ads, when I look down at the ad bar it is advertising how to advertise ;D
i use firefox so right now adblockplus and noscript are protecting me from the evil clutches of google's advertising people. i feel renegade
