Is Jay playing tonight. According to ESPN website, he is number 12 and started, but he seems invisible if he is playing. PS... USA 1-0 up at moment.
To answer my own question, yes he is playing. I blame it on a chinese commentary and poor quality webcast that I didn't spot him earlier
Looks like I've got my own personal thread. Final score was 2-0 to USA. Jay did ok, not a lot to do as most the game was down the other end, no major f*ck ups, a few chances to hoof it etc.
well at least hes playing international football always aplus and if hes not playing much might not come back so tired lol
thats a myspace pic if ever i saw one! all you need is the shot to have been taken slightly higher up!
and why are the sponsor boards in spanish? is this indicative of the demographics of football support in your country?
This was the first complete game in non-friendly competition Jay has played for the US. Jay had a strong game. Not a lot to do, but he was solid and didn't "f" anything up. He showed a strong air game, and was like the bulldog I'd always heard about and had seen on TV. US fans always chant "Ka-sey Kell-er, Ka-sey Kell-er, Ka-sey Kell-er". I love him so the monotony doesn't bother me. Anyway, it is unusual that someone else gets a piece of it, but Jay got a "Jay De-mer-it, Jay De-mer-it, Jay De-mer-it", and I didn't start it either. He's gaining some notoriety and that's good. He'll continue to get time in this tournament, probably starting again against El Salvador next week. The T&T team was rather sad. None of their stars played, as there was a rift in the team since the T&T Football federation failed to pay their World Cup bonus money, so they boycotted the Gold Cup. Too bad, really. The US also played their second team for the game. For the record, I did not drink anything except water and a cola...atypical for me. glug glug glug
Yes, particularly for the national teams of latin American countries but even more than that... LA has HUGE volumes of spanish as a first language speakers. 2nd generation Mexican and latino kids like baseball, football, and basketball, but the first generation likes soccer. Typically, American fans of the US national team are English speakers regardless of what race they come from. Still, though, soccer is the primary sport for only 10-15% of the population here, and those who are willing to pay to watch are very likely to be hispanic.
i wish i could speak fluent non-english, but as an english man the odds were always stacked against me.
Seriously...judging by some of the posters on this board, English people often don't speak english as a first language, so count yourself among the lucky ones who grabbed the opportunity.
also what does your sig mean? are you some sort of cato or cato hirer? (cato being le dude in the pink panther movies)
i still don't get it. me dumb. you explain and why do americans hate cuba? i know you may only use this site to talk football and may grow tired of questions about american culture, so feel free to just say no, just like zammo at any time
Nothing deep really, just the core of the LA Riot Squad's signature chant, done after wicked strikes and near goal scoring opportunities: You can never, you can never, you can never rest easy because the team you're playing is the LA GALAXY. Not particularly American, just Riot Squad. Anyhoo... Cuban-American's hate Fidel Castro and vote uniformly. Anti-communism is one of the pillars of 20th century politics and a guaranteed sure thing to deliver the vote of the cold war generation. Politicians love a sure thing... Do the math! I expect changes to this in the next decade or so. What I liked about the linked Mexico Cuba result is that they caused panic amongst the Mexico futbol federation, US Soccer's arch rival... go Cuba!!!!
US politics is usually driven by us vs them. We know who "us" is (not really!!!) and conveniently "them" is whoever it is convenient for "us" to have them be. Brilliant!
Mexican's are often "them" to some of us. For me "them" is the Mexican National Football team. And spiders.
Unfortunately, Jamaica didn't make it this time...seeds bolded. Group A has already had an upset with Canada beating Costa Rica.
Canada beating Costa Rica can't be that much of an upset. Not with Mighty Jim Brennan. Also, as someone in the know, do you think our own AFC Watford could compete in this competition, such is the standards of some of the teams?
it is also good to see the good old fashioned scarves and hat look at a football ground, back when it wasn't considered 'mongy'
You just did. My hat: I'm not a big fan of skin cancer. The red white & blue tophats around me made me want to fly a McDonald's Corporate jet into disneyland. (NOTE to Homeland Security: I'm using satire for humor. NOT AN ACTUAL THREAT.) USA fans are usually pretty good, but some are just idiots and losers. Suppose it's like that everywhere though. Our main US supporters group is "Uncle Sam's Army"...get it? USA. HA! They are absolutely embarassing, doing high school basketball cheers and whatnot. Still I figured it would be better than sitting amongst the 20,000 or so Guatemala and El Salvador fans.
