Stevenage Borough 1(4)-1(3) Watford Fc - League Cup First Round

I guess not living in Stevenage means you're a snob.

Used to work with a Wimbledon fan who referred to them as "Satanage"

 

Let’s this one over and done with, hopefully without any injury concerns, so we can get back to the proper business of absolutely pi$$ing the league.

 

Easy win!

Stevenage 1-5 Watford

 

I'm outraged that our superstars have to play against this tinpot outfit. Just play the kids, they'll win comfortably still.

 

Could be a tough game as it will be their cup final, not often they get to see a proper football team in their northern ********, hopefully we don't ruin their big day out too much.

Stevenage Rovers 0-4 Watford

 

Saturday was good preparation for that

 

Yes I parked there for that game, but apparently they recently banned football parking in there.

Would like to see a lot of changes. This cup is pointless to us and our better players shouldn’t be made to play intense Val-ball again so soon for the sake of this tinpot competition.

I went in 2014 with Mrs Ilkley. It's the only ground I can recall that had its bar outside, so you couldn't get a beer once you were through the turnstiles. For messing me about in this way, (nine years ago) I hope we give them a sound thrashing.

 

Until today I honestly though they were called Sevenage. Imagine my surprise!

Shows what a no-mark team they are, really.

 

Old Town Stevenage is rather lovely.

It has Rooks Cottages,where Forster set Howerd's End.

To be fair to Stevenage, the fact they are a league club at all is pretty remarkable. They were founded in 1976 after Stevenage Athletic went bust. As recently as 1990-91 they were playing in the Isthmian League Division Two North against the likes of Berkhamsted, Hemel Hempstead Town and Tring Town. They won the title that year to get promoted to the 7th tier of English football. Another couple of promotions got them into the Conference, which they won in 1996 – but were denied promotion to the Football League because their ground wasn't up to scratch. They quickly improved the stadium but it took them another 14 years before they won the title again.

In the late 90s there was also their FA Cup tie against Newcastle, when they held them to a draw at home and narrowly lost the replay.

I watched them quite a bit in the 1990s when a friend's uncle played for them and back then they were as non-league as you could get. I suppose a modern equivalent would be seeing a club like Hemel Hempstead Town get into the League.

Inexplicably ran to the touchline and went mental at Sannino after scoring a goal, yeah.

Live nearby, go regularly, no pretence, just a strong league 1 or 2 club that used the luck of Macclesfield screwing it up to get stronger and up their game. Long backed by their chairman. Town more than a bit crap though! Even Wetherspoons has shut up shop!
