Exactly. It's also very un-English to make a big deal out of it. I wonder, will it be the same people who spend all year proclaiming that this country is 'going to the dogs' and they'd emigrate if they could, who will be first out having a drink for St George?
For me, Paddy's day is a good excuse to have a pint of the black stuff. Something I' don't normally drink out of choice. Burns night is an opportunity to have a haggis, again something I only have once a year. I am proud to be british, but proudest to be English. St Georges day is an oportunity to celebrate that fact with a couple of good old English Ales, something I do rather too regularly but I do make an effort for this day. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and act accordingly of course, as long as it is not at the expense of someone else, an attitude I feel sums up being British.

I'm not sure why you would be 'proud' to be English. It's an act of chance, not an achievement. Wouldn't 'fortunate' be closer to the mark?

Err well if someone wants to celebrate a national day for their country then go ahead and I can't think of a reason why it should be frowned upon. Didn't see anyone on here complaining when it was St. Patrick's day or any other countries national day.
Because its counter-productive. In todays world we should be moving towards recognising that everyone is fundamentally the same. All that we're doing is putting up barriers and dividing lines. By all means celebrate your uniqueness, but considering england (and britain in general) is a nation that has spent most of its history taking other nations cultures and heritage and making them its own, i dont see much uniqueness here myself. Oh and btw, St. George was Turkish and its doubted he ever even visited England
Only if for some reason you look down on people from other countries. I don't, so don't feel fortunate is a good term to use. Having pride in your country does not equal thinking it's better than everywhere else. Supporting Watford doesn't mean that I think it's a better team than Manchester United, but I'm proud to support Watford. Exactly, people are becoming scared to have pride in their country because the PC brigade assume this then means you're a bigot. Each nation has its own developing and evolving customs, culture, food etc. Wouldn't it be a boring place if everyone and everything was the same? Like visiting a shopping centre these days, they all look the same and all contain the same chain stores. St. George is the patron saint of many countries and is regarded as such for what he did (other than slaying a dragon:biggrin rather than for where he originates.

Oh my gawd reading posts on here is like reading Social Workers Weekly. Im sick to death of the farkin PC farkin brigade. They are no better than the politicians and landowners. Its an industry. Nothing more nothing less. Its a chance for people to exploit a situation and make the kind of money they wouldnt make anywhere else. Even the people at the top couldnt give a shyte. They let more n people into the country fuelling the bigots and racists, knowing damn well the more people they let in here, the more the price of land will increase, thereby lining their pockets even more. Ill be celebrating St Georges with a few English Ales cos Im proud to be English. Simple. And before the PC brigade take the easy and knee jerky option theyre so fond off, Im not a racist and never have been. I have gone toe to toe with the NF, the BNP, Combat 18 and before them Column 88.
Being proud doesn't seem to make you happy. I can't remember seeing a post of yours where you aren't complaining.
