no one can cross like beckham. whether he can maintain that level without playing top level football every week is the question.

It was a good move when he thought his international career was over but I agree now it is going to be hard for him to maintain an international standard.

    ::Never Rest Easy::

A lot of handwringing over this move. It's rather enjoyable to watch. I know already, I'm an @ss. Still there is an unbelievable amount of hilarious things written about it. It's constant fun.

It's really not so much a football move as it is a business move, a very well calculated one. Don't get me wrong, he will have to play hard, maybe even harder than he has before to keep up. Though the creativity and football mind here isn't where it is in Europe, athleticism is what offests it. Those who come to the US league and expect to dominate simply by being good in another country are usually mistaken and don't make it here. Beckham is ready for it though. Though his new team have wasted a lot of time and half the season getting ready, an interesting group of players is being assembled and this time next year, LA will once again have exciting football.

He definitely knows what he's getting into as far as invigorating football in the US. I'll be enjoying each of the home games Beck's will be playing in with the Galaxy, just like I've enjoyed all the ones he's never played in.

The difference is a lot more people will be enjoying them now.

it must be hard as a fan to know a player is just there to increase his own and his wifes fame, i know this has happend before but not like this

I disagree. That's not all he's there to do...

what can he do there which well beat what he has done in the parst

the only thing he has not done is win anything major with england and this move will NOT help that one bit

Not to be flippant, but there IS life outside England...I should know, I'm proof. At least I think I'm alive.

Beckham going to the US will probably not help your dreams of England winning anything major. From that perspective, you are quite right.

It will help bring football to a new level in the US though. That probably means nothing to you now, but it means a lot to me and the small but hard core of "soccer/futbol" fans here. He's not passively getting paid simply to play footy here. He is being paid to drive the whole US Soccer machine forward. It's a risk, and he's being paid well for it, but successful results will be far greater than any major championship. He's got the opportunity to be the Mao Tse-tung of football in America. The Thomas Jefferson, if you will. The Elvis Presley of football. The Henry Ford of football. The Martin Luther of football. The Charles Darwin of football. The Magna Carta of football.

Doesn't help english football much though. Sorry.

hell yeah! even though we don't have a written constitution (hello israel and new zealand) we still essentially created the written constitution. don't you forget it!

Ultimately, it's the idea that matters. Sometimes ours isn't worth the paper it's written on. (See Korematsu vs US and Guantanamo Bay, sorry for the crappy Wiki links.) It may as well be just an idea.

Similarly, the idea of Beckham may actually be enough for some, but I want him to make the Galaxy win, win, WIN, & WIN! I wish he was still out of favour with the 'wizards' in the FA so he could play more games with the Galaxy this year.

i think its more his dream and most of the countrys dream

i honestly think if he was in the england team when mclaren first took over he would not be going to america now!

for this i feel he has basicly giving up any hope of winning the euros or even a world cup , which are by far to of the biggist things to win in football

what ever happens in america he will not be remeberd in his home country for it

he is more likly to remeberd for kicking out in 98 and winning **** all as a captian and i think making the move that ended his chances of doing well with england

Whatever you think of Beckham he has set up his family for life and future generations, not bad for a humble background

I agree, not bad at all. Good on him.

A bit more detail on the salary he'll be getting from MLS:
The total salary he will receive, is somewhere around $27.5 million for all the years he plays, which will be paid $400,000/year by MLS and the rest by AEG. This seems quite good, but really rather money ordinary for a "big star".

The other "perk" that got him to sign was the fact that the LA Galaxy won't withhold any of his image rights. That perk led to the estimation of the deal being worth around $200 mil, which made MLS look like either
    a. real players on the world soccer talent market or
    b. desperate (to save our league) & looney
Desperate and looney are what the UK press have mostly reported about.

Are image rights typically added into players reported remuneration in the UK, or is it just the crap English press pulling another one over on their sad-sack readers/buyers? (I love questions with absolutely no bias contained in them.)

in holland they have control, which is why bergkamp was the second richest footballer in britain when he played here.

    Interesting...the inmates run the asylum.

One smart aspect of the very young MLS is the way the league owns all the contracts of the players and enforces a salary cap (approx. $2.3 million/team), preventing the the teams from blowing out their brains trying to sign expensive players. This is extremely important for two reasons: first, it prevents the ridiculous NY Cosmos'ification of the MLS. Second, it keeps the teams on a very equal footing, preventing a situation like that of the Premiership where 5 teams always win and the rest compete to stay up.

The big change this season was the establishment of a 'Designated Player' rule, probably to be referred to as the "Beckham Exception" from here on, that allows teams to sign one player for any amount they want, with only the first $400,000 counting towards the salary cap (paid by MLS), with the remainder paid by the owners of the team. Thus players like Juan Pablo Angel, Cuahtemoc Blanco, Claudio Reyna and Beckham are able to get competitive contracts to play football in the US.

The league stays fiscally sound, the teams get more exciting players, fans get an elevation of quality.

Sigining Becks is a typical American sporting move.
