That's what you got from those stats?

6.7 based on 77 minutes played compared to 6.2 based on 16 minutes.

    Oh dear.

Heat of the moment, angry and upset. Deep down I would love us to stay up, but lets be honest can you really see Gino doing what he should if done a few seasons back and get rid of the dead wood, and at least try to address our problem areas?

I can't. We would probably struggle again next season as well. We do have a good team, but the inconsistency is alarming.

When you pointed what out? I'd never even said anything about Sarr's fee before that here.

In fact, the only mention I'd previously made of money about money with regards to those two in this thread was when I'd said that:
"Pussetto does look a pointless signing, but the money side of it is basically irrelevant as it was another Pozzo to Pozzo one."

i.e. I was always principally judging them and being patient/impatient with them based on what I'd perceived their quality and potential to be.

Im genuinely starting to wonder if the fan base and club actually thought it wasn’t a man in a giant, grinning, Hornet costume based on their actions over the last few times we’ve played them. Weird little club.

Only if you can read the rating...and you clearly can't.

    We'll leave it there.

This is an interesting point. Who outside the top 4 teams are happy with their consistency? Watford aren't special in this respect.

You're argument was the level of patience was correlated to price tag....the higher the price tag the greater the patience....when the history of every sport is completely the opposite.

I get it, your infinite wisdom has already decided Pussetto is a bust, my philosophy is let's see what he's got over a sustained period of playing - just as I advocated for Chalobah.

Please, please, please, pleeeease show me where I said that.

My argument was always first that the patience was due to perceived quality and potential.

I would take the opposite view.

If I had to choose, the better quality a player is, and the more he has cost (all other things being equal) the quicker I would expect him to start showing some quality.

I'd say that aside from last week and that patch over Xmas we've been hugely consistent.

We've always known what the problem was a mile away. Everyone now knows it's inconsistent Watford. Maybe they have the individuals, but not the mentality or the credentials to turn those ingredients into a decent top 10 team.

If Nigel & Craig can't sort the consistency with this group & unlock the potential with their pedigree, I really don't think any other manager will. Proof in itself we need players not just with ability, but also with the right mindset to compete for the long term in the PL.

We've had all ends of the managerial spectrum, the relative soft & quiet styles of QSF/Gracia to the hardliners Silva,Mazzarri & Pearson. None of them can resolve it. I believe it needs to start with real competition for places in defence which means root & branch replacements in the summer, assuming we stay up. Needs 40M minimum spent at the back.

Why we insist playing Pereyra is crazy. He’s checked out. Has been all season. Literally said on an interview that he wants to leave in the summer. We need people up for the fight and he just isn’t. Pussetto or Welbeck must start against Leicester.

In my view, it is so wrong to concentrate on the defence rather than the attack.

I'm not sure after today, but last week only two or three teams have achieved more clean sheets than Watford in the Premier League this season.

    Goalscorers have been our problem.

That isn't "the opposite view", nor does it contradict what I was saying - as a19tgg pointed out "who would you expect more from in the long run?"; one would still persist until they hopefully eventually showed the quality or fulfilled the potential which encouraged you to sign them in the first place.

Another thing, your caveat "all other things being equal" is a huge one, and one that is not very realistic (or relevant to the examples being discussed e.g. Pussetto vs Sarr).

Lastly, it also depends on what you meant by, and what threshold was needed to be met to "start showing some quality", for instance, even if Pussetto might suddenly start putting in fairly competent performances soon, I would never expect him to reach the same level of quality as Sarr displayed in his performance vs Liverpool - even aside from Sarr vs Pussetto, there are some players who even at their peak are consistent '6 out of 10' performers' every game, and there are others that can oscillate between, say, months of '5s' and months of '8s or 9s'.

They're clearly both a problem - I think most posters on here were in agreement in the summer that we needed both at least one upgrade at CB and one upgrade at ST.

The team have goals. We all go on about it. Best attacking midfield, with options, in bottom half etc etc. Goal counts not been a significant issue in recent PL seasons.

Enhancing the defence angle is coming from the fact that when you are 2-0 up with 80 minutes still to go, you never dare make any assumptions about the final scoreline & it's been like that for a while. Going on losing runs of 4-5 games at a stretch not uncommon, but noted now with increasing frequency. It is the bane of this team IMO.

And my argument, at least, has been upgrading our defence should have been an easier cheaper and less risky process.

We've tried to sign good strikers. We've spent money on the area, we've just signed duffers. Bad luck/bad scouting - moot point.

In defence however, we've deliberately neglected the whole unit. We've signed old/crap/cheap/free/injury prone and we've got the shabby defensive unit that was always going to be the only outcome of that approach.

Skyla we don't have a good team.
If we had an average team, they'd be mid table.
If we had a good team, they'd be top 4.
The table is based on fact.
What we have are players who should be capable of better, one player who doesn't want to be here and some who think they are better than they are.
If we survive it is because other teams are either worse than us or less fortunate.

I'm not even sure why this is becoming a debate? Most clubs are inconsistent. That was my point. You could go to
almost any club and they would complain about being inconsistent. Unless you are awesome or terrible you will be inconsistent.

Secondly, you argument is always going to win. If i can hand pick 7 games and just remove them, then I think I could make almost every team be consistent. You have stripped out almost 1/4 of the season to prove your point. Yet the very games you strip out prove you are wrong.
