I don’t agree. I think he struggled in games against the top 6. Love him here but he isn’t making much difference to the big teams if he moves.

In a world where Keita, Fabinho, Jorginho, Fred are all going for around £50m then I agree £45m is about right.

But in a world where Danny Ings is packing his bags and preparing to sign for Palace for £24m, Doucoure is worth £75m.

Where you end up in between those two extremes depends on things like:

- how hard the player is pushing for a move vs length of contract,
- financial position of selling club,
- financial position of buying club,
- importance of player to selling club vs what he'd add to buying club (this explains why Palace, who don't win when Zaha isn't in the team won't sell for less than £80m but no buying club would ever see him as worth that much), etc.

 

I have a hunch that Ings will do well if he stays fit and wouldn't have been a bad option for us. But I accept I'm in a minority. I will however be back to remind you when he tops the scoring charts at the end of October

 

You may well be right. I've seen very little of him. Which partly explains my surprise at the size of the fee!

Abdoulaye Doucuoure is close to handing Watford a major boost going into the new Premier League season by signing a new contract to remain at Vicarage Road, the Watford Observer understands.

The French midfielder’s impressive 2017/18 campaign, which saw the 25-year-old crowned Player and Players’ Player of the Season, had fuelled suggestions he would move on this summer, with the player himself claiming clubs such as Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool were keeping tabs on him.

But in another statement of Watford’s ambition, we understand Doucoure is close to ending speculation about his future by putting pen to paper on a new deal with the Hornets.

The former Rennes midfielder has yet to feature in any of the Hornets' pre-season games to date, but Javi Gracia has stressed this is due to injury rather than any other issue.

Would be very surprised if someone like Gino who drives a hard bargain allowed a general release clause in there. I’d say it’s more likely that there’ll be a clause that Watford agree to negotiate with certain teams and a gentleman’s agreement that he can go for a reasonable price. Basically only teams thar have qualified for the CL or Top 6 can activate it.

 

So good he gets two squad numbers...
