Crap game with both sides unable to string a couple of passes together. Doyley, Buckley and Sordell were particularly poor. The most postive thing is we won whilst playing well below the level we've shown recently. The floodlights were a farce and I didn't think the game would finish when they went off for the third time. Pitch also looked frozen in places to me and that was before the game started.
Been back about an hour, we rode it a bit today, but as mentioned elsewhere, sometimes you have to win ugly - today was one of those days. Loach made one blinding save just before the penalty, that ten minutes just before and after the pen was Scunny's best period, our equaliser came out of the blue but then the lights went again, we got into them a bit after the third break and they looked like a spent force, Whichelow's finish was quality and we closed the game out well. Bennett was very impressive when he came on but we did look nervy at the back. Jenkins was a lucky lad, looked like a two footed challenge, the weird thing was that neither the linesamn or ref gave anything, then their player kicked off at Jenkins and then the ref gave them a freekick... best bit of the day was £7.60 for four pints of beer and a pint of orange and lemonade!
on a seperate note, anybody got any idea what happened with the Horns fan in the wheelchair who was chucked out????
614 'Orns travelled (nice mention at the end of the OS report). Attendance 4,498 and it wasn't their lowest of the season!
In fairness to Sordell, by the point where he apparently bottled a challenge with the keeper A Taylor, Cowie and Graham had already gone off injured. Thats bound to play on your mind, especially when you are part of a very thin squad. Although I haven't seen any footage, so that could well be a poor excuse.
Yeah I agree, I hate it when players pull out of challenges. But that is the only explanation I can think of.
A very bitty game , The player that took there penalty was totally put off by our fans!!! S****horpe really took us out of the game in the first half by putting everyone behind in front of us and slowing us down!! Once we got are first one back we looked confident again!!! Quality atmosphere when the lights went off!!!
Wheeled out, surely? Dunno, I didn't see that. On the subject of Marvin Sordell.... My view was that he is now playing like a player who is listening only to his agent and believes his own publicity. Is the papertalk that he has attracted the attentions of Prem clubs true, and has it got to him? Selfish, seldom plays the simple ball to a team mate in a better position and seldom runs off the ball to create space for others. Static. I didn't hear STM on the radio as I was at the game, but I fully agree. I took a mate to the Portsmouth game (not a WFC fan) who is a sports coach and holds "the badges". He asked who the number 20 was as he thought he was being very lazy and couldn't be arsed, when it was clear he had pace and talent. The mate said what we really needed was two Danny Grahams, who embarrasses MS with his all round play, passing and work rate. AT S****horpe, Sordell was largely the same and got a huge rollocking from Sean Dyche very early on for a feeble attempt to get to a loose ball before a Scunny player which led to another attack for them. He seemed too self important to put any real effort in. Marvin did improve second half, but I feel the goals he is getting, such as the great run and finish against Pompey, mask the fact he is too often a bit of a passenger, waiting for someone else to lay it on a plate for him. Is he too nice to make an effort to jump with conviction to win a header against his marker? He needs to move about more and be less Emile Heskey lite. He had a glorious chance in the box to score at 0-0, (as did others who seemed too timid to shoot early), but got closed down by Joe Murphy. The boy's got promise but needs shaking up. No way can he carry the attack if Danny is out for some time. Deeny could but not Marvin alone. Martin Taylor was absolutely immense today, BTW.
And Dale Bennett made two unbelievable late saving tackles in our penalty area that prevented probable goals. He also did really well. Nice one.
Its easy to forget Sordell is only 19, im sure we can forgive the odd lapse in his game at this stage, but im sure with Dyche screaming at him he will soon learn.
Tommy Smith had a big of an attitude problem when he was younger too, he just needs to mature a little.
That's true...in fact, this year and year's past are interesting contrasts, aren't they? A few games seemed to go like prior years, snatching defeat from the jaws of victory, but then things seemed to gel and this run pops up.
I'm not bothered how we got them, the fact that we got the 3 points is what mattered, with the likes of Cowie, Taylor & Graham all being forced off through injury, when they would have undoubtedly played the full 90. Hope the injuries aren't too bad, but i'll take the 5 wins on the bounce any day of the week. Now rest the key players for the FA Cup, and come abck refreshed in a fortnight for the next league game.
+1. What I don't understand is why players keep doing two-footed lunges like that. Very fortunate boy yesterday.
Just before kick off I was saying in the shoutbox that Jenkins doesn't get stuck in, but on the rare occasion he does it's reckless two footed lunges!
I've commented before that Sordell is not yet the finished article but is getting better with game time. He lost the ball against Portsmouth and stopped as soon as he lost it. If he'd have considered chasing after it he'd have got it back because the Pompey player badly mis-controlled it, Sordell wasn't even looking. I'm not saying drop him or he's no good, because he has quality, he just needs more time learning how to play the game and more time to understand what is required. He has the attributes to be bloody good, but as mentioned drifts out of games for long spells.

went to the game and all I can say is: jenkins deserved to be sent off, atmosphere second half was very very good. buckley was sussed out from minute one by scunny so was kept very quiet. bloody floodlights.
