The won’t get it up and running next season so it would kick Chelsea, Liverpool, Spurs out of Champions league next season and put Arsenal down near the foot of the table. Just a slap on the wrist. And then kick them out of premier league when they get their league up and running.

This European Super League looks like it IS going to happen and will be next season.

It's quite incredible the speed of this. I thought it was just something to force a better deal from UEFA, but it seems it's gone beyond bluff.

To me the most depressing thing is that it will probably happen and people will watch it. The PL throw out the big 6 and they lost 80% of their revenue overnight, so they won't do that. Fifa seem like they're onboard with it.

One day we'll be seen as old farts for telling our kids that football used to be better, and it wasn't like this before.

How would they loose 80% of revenue overnight? I understand the next TV deal may be of a lower value but the current deal will still be valid.

Man Utd resigned from the ECA and Woodward from Uefa, looks like they’re really going for it.

I hope they do **** off, but this is just adding to me a growing disinterest in top level football generally. Our decent run from the start of the new year and the excitement a promotion campaign brings has reignited a little the burning embers of interest & passion for me, but if this ESL goes ahead I'm thinking I might stick to the non-league stuff in future.

You think Sky/BT/Overseas broadcasters wouldn't get lawyers involved if the 6 most watched teams disappeared?

It'll be devastating to our attendances next year if we're promoted and the bestest 6 aren't there.

They are trying to implement the same model used by the main American sports. It works well in the US as the pro game is at the top of a well established structure that feeds it and is fully aligned with it.

The structure in football across the world does not work like this and never will, hence just trying to change the peak of it will not work in the same way.

Let them set up their own structure, but make sure they leave the existing structure and go it fully alone.

I don't care if there is less money in football, I do not think it will change much for clubs like ours in the long term.

  11. FromDiv4

Their contact is with the league, not the specific teams in the league. Let them waste their money trying to get out of their current deal. As I said I fully expect the next deal to be lower and the EPL / remaining clubs needs to plan for that.

  12. ForzaWatford

But the product they bought would have significantly changed half way through a contract. I'm no lawyer, but surely they'd have an argument there?

It’s the long awaited nail in English footballs coffin. As someone who has struggled to be motivated to watch even our good games this season it will spell the end of my interest in the pro game.

I play twice a week in the amateur game anyway, and when my legs give up in a couple of years I’ll go and watch my kids and local non league team instead.

Yes, surely it’s no different so what happened with Covid and the threat of clubs having to give millions back to sky if fixtures were not fulfilled?

I completely agree with you, just can't see them doing it.

As I said earlier my interest in professional football has waned dramatically anyway in the last 3-4 years. I’m going through that time in my life where I still want to feel interested and invested in it but am really struggling. This will probably do it for me to be honest.

They have to do it, what they are proposing just won't work for every other team.

They already complain about too many fixtures and want the EPL to move their fixtures to accommodate their European games. This new league will be their priority and have even more effect on the EPL fixtures. Every other club will have to fit in around these teams and when games are played. They will also play squad players in the EPL games to keep their best players for the money league.

Throwing them out now will bring short term pain for all clubs, but it will be better in the future.

Ultimately it would be taking the name and history from these clubs. I doubt the players and managers are on board with this... so why not just create 15 brand new clubs, owners leave their current clubs and stick a load of cash in a created club. Then pick up whatever money grabbing players want in.

As it stands, it is a league of 15 MK Dons plus 5 others.

Of course it depends upon whether the clubs involved are themselves in breach of EPL contract and thus chucking them out is fair punishment, if that were the case then any current TV rights deal wouldn't be affected in the same way.

I don't know how it works in La Liga or Serie A, but the English clubs will need permission both from the PL and the FA to go and compete in this competition. So is the suggestion they're going to basically say 'stuff getting permission' and leave it up to those other bodies to sue them?

Mourinho gone apparently. That’s a ******* expensive dead cat to throw on the table.

Wonder if he objected to the Super League.

This is juicy as ****, can’t cope with this and Line of Duty going on at the same time.

    Jose Mourinho sacked by Spurs.

Apparently he refused to take training today as an act of defiance with his personal opposition to the European Super League. If this turns out to be true, then my estimation of him has gone up.

I always thought it would be a gigantic long overdue doping scandal that would completely shake the foundations of support and money Football gets, like Pro Cycling has had in the last 20+ years or so. But maybe it will be this instead...

Unfortunately I do think a lot of people will watch this new SL, especially the younger generation who mostly have a laser like focus on these clubs anyway.

How about all fans boycott stadium attendance of their next match, and instead stage large-scale public protests?! Oh wait....

Without the opportunity, or perhaps the increased necessity, brought upon by the strict lockdowns imposed supposedly due to protect the people, this unpopular power grab may have been more difficult to push through.

I wonder if football fans may regret their endorsement of strict, ongoing lockdowns and reductions in the ability to protest, now that it is shown that they can and have been used as a chance to take their clubs from them (along with many other things)?

I really doubt the PL are going to kick out the big 6; they'll fulfil the terms of the PL deal but might increasingly field weakened teams.

You have got to be kidding, he is deliberately following the pattern of most of his other managerial jobs.

    HE WANT'S TO BE SACKED!!!

He comes in to a club on a very lucrative contract, and usually does well in the 1st season but then his results start getting worse and worse, which ends with him getting sacked and given a golden handshake. So he more or less ends up getting paid for three seasons when he only works two.

Look back at his career and he has done this several times before.

  35. GoingDown

    GoingDown "The Stability"

Didn't happen as was posted by a fake news Twitter account. But, it does give him the opportunity to be the superhero and actually take that position. Unlikely he'll manage any of the 20 teams after all.

Maybe he'll come to us if Rafa changes his mind.
