Guardian now saying they've "been told" we're not buying a striker and that Penaranda will be the other option this year. To be fair if he turns out to be half the player we were told he was when he was signed all that time ago, we don't need anyone else. Then again, in the same transfer we also bo Mario Suarez - claimed at the time to be the best player we'd ever signed. We also bought an unknown midfielder from Rennes as well but that one went under the radar. Deeney, Gray, Penaranda, Success - if they all play to their potential that's a decent front line. Big if I know And I know Success is seen as a winger but I think we should throw him up top - he's got the right attributes
If we are ultimately successful with Deeney, Gray, Penaranda and Success as our forward options, it can only be down to extraordinary good luck, as the collective recent form (in competitive matches) of all four, is abysmal. Not to mention attitude and disciplinary issues.
Perhaps we're only looking for a loan to cover this season... then unleash Cucho next season? I'd be surprised/confused if we didn't sign a striker today.
I would be delighted if The Llama or someone similar signs. However no athlete maintains their level, sometimes it rises,sometimes it dips. Perhaps Deeney,Gray etc will perform better this season and raise their level,especially if they are fitter,control themselves and are given more game time.
Such a shame we couldn't have signed this guy. Remember the excitement of 24 hours ago ? He would have made a real difference to how this season will pan out.
I'd love it if we were able to attract big name players but the last couple of weeks proves we don't have the pulling power. My point was that IF (and I did say it was a big "if"!!) they all play to their potential, bearing in mind the hype afforded to Penaranda 2 years ago, it could be a decent forward line. I realise it is probably hopelessly optimistic on my part but the lack of any big-name striker might just give Success/Penaranda the chance to get a run and show some of the form that led us to bring them here in the first place. We are a club that needs to develop the next big thing; we don't tend to be able to buy them in, ready made.
