@xavi_jorquera explained to me that it’s €15m being paid over four seasons, with a 50% sell on fee if he’s sold within the length of his contract. Whether it’s true or not we’ll find out

Be honest, you misread the initial 'announcement', thought it was a first-team signing, now you're too pig-headed and proud to admit your mistake.

When you included him along Murray, Sierralta and Ngakia....

In an ideal world yes that would be happening but it's hard/expensive to get good players to leave their academies for another academy (especially when we're cat 2). We had no LBs in our U23 squad - Stevenson fills that gap for a year, I really don't get your gripe here.

That is a ludicrously low fee (loan fee of €3 million with an option to buy for €4.5 million) if the information from Pipa Sierra is correct. The loan and transfer fees for Suarez will do little to help solve Watford's financial deficit and there is no guarantee of gaining any more money from a 50% sell-on. The only explanation, of which I can think, is that he was refusing to play for Watford, but I still do not understand why did the club should accept such a low fee (especially in view of the great potential of Suarez).

It will be a better deal if LouOrns is correct that Watford also get another €7.5m, but could someone explain how this is just a way of getting around it with extras involved. A tweet by someone on the Twitter account of Pipa Sierra appears to confirm that LouOrns is correct.

'Cult of Gino' - basically a term for those who can't find any fault in Gino (or very little fault) as far as I'm aware

No official confirmation, of course. Just Spanish/Colombian journalists. I’ve seen a couple on Twitter saying the same thing (from what I can tell using Google translate).

50% sell on, or 50% of profit? Potentially a big difference.

I’m afraid unless you are a club like united or city filling your u23s with top prospects is difficult. Stevenson was clearly brought in as filler. His wage is insignificant in the grand scheme of things and it means we still have extra backup if required.

I understand where you are coming from but think it’s a bit unfair to write him off already, particularly on the basis he was signed for the u23s not the first team.

I may have misread, not sure if they do owe us that €7.5m or not before taking into account this transfer. Definitely sounds like we're getting €15m, and as I say, I get money is tight in Spain, but I'm disappointed we're not getting more money up front to be honest

He specifically said if Granada sell him for €30m (throw away price) we get €15m. Co-ownership was banned after Italian clubs took the piss

Surely there are no such people on this forum? I think the vast majority accept that he and the powers that be have got it very wrong over the last 18 months?

You mean he's not our new left back? I thought when the club said he was U23, I thought they were meaning he was just young. What about Max Statham? I suppose you'll be telling me he's only an academy player too?

I would have assumed Max Statham would be doing more work with the U23s this season, personally.

Still no one has come up with a plausible explanation for where the extra 7.5m euros is coming from - it just says it will be for the other 50% but why not just say its a 3m loan which will become 15m if made permanent? Why all the verbal gymnastics?

  22. Burnsy

    Burnsy First Team

Now being claimed that the second payment of 7.5m would remove the 50% sell on...

    So its 7.5m with 50% sell-on - or 15m.

    Bonkers deal.

If the deal really is 7.5m+50% sell on, but Granada can buy out the sell on clause for 7.5m I don't think that's a particularly well-structured deal for us. If Suarez is a star, Granada have the capacity to cap our upside at 15m. If he flops, we won't get any more than the initial 7.5m. @LouOrns - I don't get why the scenario that journalist gave you would ever transpire. If Granada knew they were about to sell him for 30m, why would they let us get 15m of that rather than just buy out the clause for 7.5m first.

Put it this way, if we were buying a hot young prospect with a deal structure like this, Gino would (I'd hope) be widely and rightly vaunted for it. I get that he doesn't want to be here etc. but this just looks like poor business.

I think it’s derogatory term probably created by someone who likes to put people down in order to feel superior about themselves. Increasingly adopted by a minority clique on here to ridicule those who don’t 100% agree with them. happy clapper is so passé these days don’t you know.

Getting back to the thread the big positive is that if Gino has negotiated a 50% sell on it hopefully means he’s here to stay. He’s not gonna want some future owner to get 50% at some point. Oh happy days......

Yep, and a lot of the time I post positive things in defense of them to contrast the overly negative views on here. Pretty sure most of us know they're not perfect and have made mistakes, but the constant negativity is beyond tedious to me.

We tell Granada to F off
We tell Suarez to get over his ego and play

Yea I agree, it doesn’t look like a good deal from that side of things. Again it’s two people saying two different things and I’m inclined to go with the €7.5m + 50% sell on. We’ll find out sooner or later

Maybe they can stipulate that the further €7.5m (taking it to €15m total) must be paid 12 months in advance of any future sale in order to waive Watford’s 50% sell-on?

But I agree, without any details like that it seems like we’ve agreed to a deal where we either get a smallish fee for an average player, or a moderate fee for a good player.

Agreed. No point melting down based on speculative details of a deal that hasn't gone through yet - though I appreciate you passing on what you hear. I wouldn't have though the two journalists you've mentioned are THAT close to the deal either. I wonder if the club will be very up front with the details as they were with Estupinan.

Let's be honest, if we had signed him now, on that deal, everyone on here would be scouting his YT videos and looking at his stats and saying it was an amazing deal.

As we're on the other side of it however, it's incredibly poor dealings.

    If true.

Meanwhile Pozzo’s genius money printing machine has left us in serious debt with every asset and revenue stream borrowed against. And after 5 years of premier league revenue. That’s the whole picture.
