Might be wrong, but wasn't then something saying we're only paying a small proportion of his wage? 7k or something?

Still a waste, but not the biggest waste we've done.

Granted he is maybe just rusty, but against Newport Murray couldn't even do simple things like pass or control the ball.

This obsession with Toby Stevenson is bizarre. Why haven't you included Max Statham or Sam Dalby in your rant? They aren't first team quality either, they're there to fill out the u23 squad. The u23 squad is a useful enough tool to hopefully find decent players like Phillips and Cassidy, and to give minutes to players like Pedro last season.

And he may never make it at Championship level but it's needlessly harsh to completely write his career off. He's 20! What was Deeney doing at 20, for example. Or Vardy?

Was it simply because he wanted to leave? Maybe Ivic did rate him, and would have picked him had he said he wanted to stay here?

Richard Thomas, replacement was needed for Lewis Gordon and already has some first team experience which is a bonus for a U23 player. Really don't see the issue you have here HB1.

I realize that top sides were probably scouting Suarez for most of last season, but I wonder whether the interest of some clubs might have diminished because his goal scoring tended to dry up when the Segunda Division resumed after the lockdown. He scored only two goals in his final nine games for Zaragoza, whereas he was much more prolific before the lockdown. I am not sure whether the reduction in his goals (which may have been related to the team performances of Zaragoza) would have had any influence on their decision making. It was just a thought!

Sounds like it's a loan for €3m, permanent option for €4.5m, 50% sell-on in case of permanent deal.

Agree generally - he is clearly U23 fodder.

However, both of those players needed to drop to the lower leagues and play regularly to develop their games. I have watched two games of Stevenson and he looks nowhere near good enough for the championship. He may be a late bloomer and have a career after working his way up, but I'd be surprised if he has an impact with us.

Damn. Only 3m loan fee and 4.5 option for total €7.5m BUT 50% sell on.

LouOrns believes we also get another €7.5m so it's €15m total in addition to sell on. "It’ll be another €7.5m after the first two instalments are paid. Granada’s owners owe the Pozzo’s €15m, this is just a way of getting around it with extras involved"

Horrendous deal. 50% sell on is great, but he would have to go for enormous money in the future to justify the €7.5m fee.

Updated original post with updated info. Also, what's the COG acronym?

Hmmm. Not sure how much I trust this cloak and dagger payments thing between the owners. Sounds a cop out to me personally as a way of defending a poor deal.

COG - Cult of Gino I think? @GoingDown

I'm not sure about that magicked 7.5 figure either. Hopefully in the official statements they mention the figured like we did with Estupinan.

The 50% I think is promising though and I suspect we'll see at least £20m from that in 2-3 years.

Surely a 50% sell on is great, what am I missing? If he's ****, we've got £15m. If he's great we've got £15m and another huge chunk of money, and the potential to buy him back (they'd be more likely to sell to us as they wouldn't have to give us half the money).

Sounds like a bizarrely structured deal. At that sort of price we're down to doing the player a favour by essentially releasing him for a nominal fee - makes no sense and needs an explanation.

Except the only word we have on it being 15m euros rather than 7.5m is someone saying Granada owe us some money randomly.

Because you need a squad. Even at U12 level in academies coaches know that a majority of players will never make the cut and should be released - but you need players on the pitch and bench to provide a squad for the 1 or 2 that might make it. He was a free transfer on a 1 year deal on a most likely insignificant (<£1k a week) wage. It's unfair and pointless to class him as a first team signing.

I think the latest stories are saying it is €7.5m.

If he turns out to be a dud, we essentially just get a €3.5m loan fee.

Not a good, shrewd piece of business by the club? I'm sure it will be spun that way. 50% sell-on......sounds fantastic and the £3m up front will come in very handy in paying off debts. We're in the EFL now you know.....and money doesn't grow on trees. We've got to take what we can get.

So basically they will pay us €15m, but only €3m of that up front, another €4.5m within a year, and then another €7.5m of money that they would have already owed us anyway even if they hadn't bought him? I get that money is tight in Spain, but that's not good, an absolute snip for Granada. I mean, that 50% sell-on fee could be good for us, but it'll be totally useless if he does turn out to be ****

People said the same about Richarlison for ages and then the club entered into a seperate settlement with Everton so it was clearly a load of pish.

Where have I classed him as a first team signing? He's a pointless signing even for the U23 side.

Watford should be buying players, even U23 ones, with the view to maybe turning them into first team players. He'll be like Randell Williams or some of the others we swooped up a couple of years ago. A complete waste of time.

    I'm confused as well.

I've seen some say on Twitter Granada already owe the Pozzos some money and so are including that in the fee (unless I've misinterpreted).

Surely that money owed is owed regardless? Including it in the fee will maybe make things look better on our balance sheets (although sounds dodgy) but as it was owed anyway it isn't really counting towards the fee they are getting Suarez for...

  32. There are tweets with 15m euros, a tweet with 50% ownership (which is illegal) and a tweet with the bizarre loan + option + 50%.

Take your pick which one you want to believe. No proof any are right.

So it’s €7.5m (3 now, 4.5 next year) plus 50% of the profit on the next sale - unless the profit is less than €7.5m, in which case we’re paid €7.5m?

Doesn’t seem like a great deal tbh. I suppose if he flops then we’re guaranteed €15m for an average/poor player.
