I heard someone interviewed yesterday who said because the vote of the big nations' managers and captains count the same as Vanuatu's Manager and captain, it is almost always a flair player who wins simply because the smaller countries don't get to follow teams as much so the players in the head lines will get the prize. I would have liked to see Iniesta get it but it is hard to argue against Messi. Scored 38 or so goals last season as his team won the domestic double AND the Champions League. Add to that the facts that he's an amazingly gifted player who - unlike other nominees - don't whinge, don't cheat, don't throw himself to the ground constantly and isn't more concerned with his hair than his football. Yes I agree with the choice of Messi and it is my mission to bring him to Watford in January....

It's a stupid award. None of the Brazilians voted for Messi inc.dungbeetle. Casillas voted for Ronaldo, chavTerry Drogba, Benayoun Gerrard. See a pattern ? It's very incestuous and derided by many senior football journalists. All the middle Eastern votes went to EPL players because that's what they watch for instance.
