There have been many discussions on what makes a football club big and over time the group of clubs considered the biggest can change. But for some time now, particularly in the media, the big six has been fixed as: Arsenal, Spurs and Chelsea from London, the two Manchester clubs and Liverpool. However, following their defeat at Middlesbrough last night, Spurs wait for a major trophy will extend to at least 15 years. Since they won the EFL Cup in 2008, 10 other clubs have won one, including Birmingham, Swansea, Portsmouth, Wigan and Leicester as well as all the usual suspects. Some more stats: 6 clubs have won the EFL Cup since Spurs did. 9 clubs have won the FA Cup since Spurs did, including Everton. 12 clubs have been national champions since Spurs, including Ipswich, Leeds, Derby, Forest, Villa, Blackburn, Leicester and Everton. 3 English clubs have won the UEFA Cup/Europa League since Spurs. 6 English clubs won the Cup Winners' Cup after Spurs did, including Everton and West Ham. I'm the first to argue that it's not just trophies or history that make a club big, but how about we have a 'Big 5' now?
Viewing figures. That’s what the super league was being based on mostly. Owner wealth comes into it a bit. That’s why Leicester were cut out of the conversation. If there was to be a ‘big 7’, the other would’ve have been Leeds but now Newcastle will take that spot. Same with Arsenal really. Not particularly successful anymore but ludicrously have a large amount of entitled morons that watch them. Had they not got Wenger, they’d be kicking around mid-table for life, still like at that hovel Highbury.
Yeap viewing figures/number of armchair fans/reknown both in the UK and abroad. It isn't about success itself.
Which begs the question: why do people at home or abroad want to watch Spurs more than Everton, Villa, Newcastle etc.? Was that the case even when they were kicking around in mid-table during the noughties?
Revenue, it’s all based on revenue. The ESL was the top revenue generating clubs across Europe, nothing to do with trophies or anything else. The clubs a who generate the most revenue feel entitled to an even larger amount of it.
I guess they will have lot of long standing supporters who have been fans for decades rather than just a load of glory hunters who have decided to become Spurs fans.
I think it is primarily: 1. Revenue - Levy has really created a commercial juggernaut. That chart shared above shows that Arsenal’s revenue (6th) is almost twice that of Everton’s (7th); and 2. Consistent finishes in the top 6 from 2008-2020. Prior to last season (7th) they had finished 6th or higher in 11th successive seasons. In the mid-2000s everyone only really thought of there being a top four: United, Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool. I think City’s takeover made that a misnomer and so in the process of the term being re-thought, which coincided with Spurs’ decent form under Redknapp, it was decided to round it off to a top 6. I don’t think winning a one off competition merits top 6 status. It has to be consistent success creating/coupled with commercial largesse (hence why Leicester cannot be considered top 6).
They should be deported back across the river to Woolwich. Let's face it Nottingham Forest are bigger than both. Two, TWO European cups. Put that in your pipe and smoke it you North London mob.
Spuds . The perrenial under/over achievers. Even when the Prem was shyte they finished 3rd in a 2 horse race . Best practice is to stop worrying about the London's press expectation of them .
When the premier league first started getting boring Sky changed their reporting from the big 4 to the big 6 to try and make it more appealing so it is TV led. Ironic that Spurs have “this game is about glory” plastered over their stadium when it is clearly about revenue and viewing figures as everyone knows.
Can you easily buy a fake replica shirt / other branded tat / temporary tattoo that relates to the club when you go on holiday? If yes then big club / probably top 6 It's as simple as that Found easily Utd, City, Chelsea, Arsenal, Spurs. Liverpool Less likely to find Everton, Wolves, Leeds, West Ham, Villa, Newcastle Rare Everyone else
