I thought 9 in 40 seconds would be top 10 for sure, but I'm 20th .

**** forums? They're having a laugh? You lot should be on University Challenge. Perhaps an inter site challenge is possible

Some of us haven't had the chance to go on University Challenge yet.

I'm just watching ym recorded version of this evening's. I'm eager to see if there's a question regarding Mickey Mouse's fashion sense.

you realise your level of maths will be lower than a lot of the people doing this quiz?

Dammit. I scrolled past a question again. I am a poor mouse user, like your grandpa, clicking & clicking but never getting the double click.

PS: At '3', aren't these supposed to be harder? We need to kick this up to 8 or 9 to separate the crappy mouse using nerds from the quick clicking grade school boys.

Today's quiz is Geography. If you're American, Canadian, Australian, Russian and possibly Middle Eastern aware then you've got a chance :dismay:

I absolutely sucked at that. Went for speed and made two silly mistakes. Hey ho!

The question about egg production in Kansas really fooled me.

I only knew about 3 of those questions, was 50/50 on a few others, so don't ask me how I got 8...

I missed the Abu Dhabi one. It was probably the easiest one and I missed it.

How the hell are you all supposed to know where the *!#~ Mall of America is and why WHY would you give a shot?

With regard to the Canada questions, I have no special advantage. We USA'ers get very little exposure to Canuckistan, for better or for worse.

Awful effort. The trees one should have been put away, and I reckon the bird one was gettable.

Fourth though. Not to be snatched at.

These trivia quizzes remind me of a story dating back to my high school days.

I have always been a terrible student which really frustrated my teachers because they always believed me to be smart. I kept getting put in advanced classes based on my potential, but then I would underperform, badly. I never ever did homework, unless I had a girl I was interested in who said "Let's study together", and I did so only in hopes of not actually studying.

Anyway, after three years of nearly failing Advanced Placement English, my teacher had enough of me and sent me to Basic English. The guys and girls in there were, how shall I put this, um...'not college material'. For gods sake, they still did spelling tests in the eleventh grade!

I was a good speller and and thought of each Friday test as an easy way to get an A. The teacher also had a question before each test whcih if you answered correctly, you were given an automatic 10/10 and didn't have to take the spelling test.

The first week I was in the class, I got the question right so I doodled on my ny notebook while everyone took the spelling test. The next week, I got it right again, and a couple of the lads in class (who thought I was stupid because I had bad grades) said things like "Fitz you got lucky". The next week I got it right again. Mind you, the questions were fairly obvious things like "What city is the Liberty Bell in?", or "Who was President in World War II?". Pretty easy stuff.

I think the teacher thought I was cheating so he stopped writing them down in his notebook and wrote the question on the board immediately before the test. Each week 2 or 3 of us would get it, and always me.

As I kept getting them right, the teacher started to make them more and more obscure. Soon, I was the only one to get the question right, and I had yet to take a spelling test. Finally, the teacher came up with the most obscure thing I think he could find.

    The question was:
"________" lives in the old gum tree."

I had lived in Hawaii, and Hawaiian public schools (which are terrible) had a special focus on music instruction. We all learned songs from around the world, particularly the English speaking world, and sang them and played them in class. So I had a huge unfair advantage over the class in this one.

I started laughing to myself as I wrote the answer on the paper and flipped it over because I was a teenage kid and loved the fact that my teacher couldn't stump me. No one got the question except me, and a few of my classmates started to believe I wasn't just a dumb kid.

So the teacher, disqualified me from the question part and made me take the tests from that point out. I got 10/10 on the first one. He also had a rule that if you took the test and got 10/10, you didn't have to take the test the next week. So we did that for 6 weeks or so before he quit making me take the test at all and he asked me to do errands on Friday out of class.

American education at it's finest! It's all about LOW expectations and people like me taking advantage of them.

    PS: kookaburra

Great story Fitz. Now if only that question was in the quiz as my kids were singing that song all summer!

  25. Fitz

    Fitz Squad Player

I just remembered, the teacher asked me to announce my answer. I felt a little weird saying Kookaburra, but I did. The teacher agreed with me and his face got a little red, then one of the kids, Brian Moak it was, burst out, "KOOKYBURROW?! WHAT THE HELL IS A KOOKYBURROW!?!"

I was laughing so hard at that point. Moak was on the football team and was wearing his football jersey for the big game that night, and was a little more aggressive than usual. I thought he was going to stand up, flip the desks aside and pull my arms out of socket.

He called me KOOKYBURROW for the rest of the year. He would probably call me that now if he saw me again.
