    Well, they actually sacked him.
Or perhaps they just loaned him to some other club to gain experience.

One of the many benefits of being owned by the Pozzo family

    http://www.thisislocallondon.co.uk/..._Players_won_t_be_sold_to_pay_bills_/?ref=rss

Watford players will no longer be sold to fund operating loses, according to the club’s chief executive Scott Duxbury.

The Hornets have made no secret of the fact they needed to sell players to balance the books in recent years and there are noticeable departures every summer.

This year has been no different, with vice captain Adrian Mariappa and goalkeeper Scott Loach leaving the club.

But speaking last week, before the duo departed, Duxbury claimed Watford do not have to sell and the money raised will be reinvested back into the playing squad.

He said: “We don’t have to sell players but our philosophy, which is the philosophy at Udinese and it is my personal philosophy, is that we should never be scared of selling players when they are at the top of their value, as long as that money is going back into the playing squad.

“Some of the most successful clubs in the world are selling clubs – Manchester United sold Jaap Stam. The question should be not who are you selling but who are you bringing in.

“Our philosophy will be not to just hold on to players because we don’t have to sell, which we don’t financially because we are fine, but if the player is at top value and we have identified through our scouting network a better and younger player, then of course we will sell.

“But the key is that the money won’t be to fund operating losses, it will be to reinvest into the playing squad and make it better. But there is no pressure to sell to fund trading losses.

“The whole ambition and philosophy of the club has now changed.”

Watford had a number of outstanding debts after former owner Laurence Bassini stopped paying bills once it became clear he would be leaving the club.

When asked how much debt the club had, Duxbury replied: “I can’t go into specifics but the reason the Pozzos are here is to make sure the club is stable. They are aware of the debt situation and we are working through it.

“As of the date of completion, the club is completely stable and has no financial problems because of the Pozzos.

“I can’t go into the specifics of the level of debt but we are being supported by the Pozzos through a new business plan and through the team achieving success, we will increase the revenues and we will move towards being self-sufficient. But in the meantime, we will have the support of the Pozzos,” the chief executive added.

I have a couple of problems with this statement, with regard to the section above highlighted in bold: -

    Almunia for Loach?

    Fitz-Hall for Mariappa?

    This does not compute

Are the Pozzo's able to sack Duxbury & Nani or do the two of them run the club on a level footing with the Italian family?

I ask because with every interview I read from Duxbury he gives, to my mind at least, fairly empty rhetoric but always with the proviso that the Pozzo's are in the background like some kind of guardian angel.

So if the decisions of the two new Executive Directors don't work out will Zola be the scapegoat and a new manager is found or would they be as culpable as the manager himself and the Pozzo's find a new triumvirate to put in place?

Good question, I am so pleased with the takeover but so sceptical of these two and the negative impact they could both have on the club.

If it weren't for Nani and Duxbury, we wouldn't have been taken over by the Pozzos and, chances are, would be very close to (or in) administration.

If that doesn't warrant giving them a chance, what does?

  15. oxhey67

Totally agree JH93, every chance by the supporters should be given to them.

My only concern is - are they answerable to anybody?

When the talk of the takeover gathered pace it was all about the Pozzo's and they've done this and do that. A real football background and a business model that works. I had a hard on for them.
But to me it looks like Duxbury & Nani are running the club, not the Pozzo's. That's my concern as, as far as I'm aware, they hadn't figured in the previous successes of Udinese and Granada.
Again, to me (to you, to me, to you - shut up! Bloody voices!!) it looks like the Pozzo's are very much in the background with us.

That's why my original question of are they sackable was asked.
Not because I want them out but because I got excited at the thought of a Pozzo run club, not one run by Duxbury & Nani. (That and Duxbury just doesn't fill me with confidence for some reason.)

Could not agree more with this. I thought it was the Pozzos that were running this particular show and these two fill me with zero confidence. Interesting West Ham viewpoint today http://thegamesgonecrazy.blogspot.co.uk/2012/07/watfords-duxbury-pulls-out-west-ham.html

Could it be that the Pozzo's take on the situation is that they are happy to let Duxbury & Nani deal with the day to day running of the club but will use Watford as a true feeder club.. ie loaning players out that need match experience.

Maybe this explains why the incoming players (real and/or rumoured) havent exactly all fitted with what we thought was the Pozzo way?

My take on it is that Duxbury & Nani, togehter with Zola are/will be equiping the team with what they consider is the neccessary ammunition to get up to the Prem.. and the Pozzo's are trusting their judgement of the English game while suggesting some younger loan players from their existing clubs.

To be honest, the Pozzos have very little to do with the day-to-day running of Granada either, they installed people to run it for them, and that has been a huge success. I'm not saying I'm not wary of Duxbury and Nani, who's job at West Ham was none too impressive, but our backing is much better than the Icelandics were, which was part of what made everything go **** up. I'm pretty sure Nani unearthed Pirlo alongside a few other decent players at Brescia as well.

    wfcmoog Tinpot

Bottom line is this - Who is funding us?

Duxbury and Nani don't have visible means of funding the club as far as I know, so that means it's the Pozzos. That means that ultimately Nani and Duxbury are answerable to them. GP will not allow his investment to sour and will take steps to change things or have more input if needed. Why would it be any other way?

My concern is the term 'project' that came with Duxbury & Nani.
The Pozzo's may have called the purchase of Granada a 'project' and if so I'll stop looking at Duxbury & Nani with doubting eyes.
If they were charged with the task of finding the Italians a new team then fine but as I understand it they took the idea of WFC to them.

My worry is although the Pozzo's are funding it, it's the ex-WHU men who are running it and not the Pozzo's doing both as I read and believed it to be before the takeover.

Oh well, whoever is calling the shots I hope they do the business and I'll be waving my pom-poms as much as anybody once we line up against Palace.

I think you will find that if they don't come up with the goods they will be fired by the Pozzos. Udinese seem to have gone through a lot of managers in recent years.

A little bit on Giampaolo Pozzo by Mina Rzouki today (http://sulia.com/channel/serie-a/f/efc10978-edbe-40cb-a35c-580b0ccd703f/?source=twitter)

Giampaolo Pozzo has shown why he is one of Italy's greatest businessmen. Not only will the Udinese stadium project create hundreds of local jobs to help contribute to society during difficult economic times but he's building a project that will help bring the society together.

The Udinese stadium will not simply be a stadium but a vast area with restaurants, rooms for fans to congregate even when there arent any matches, VIP areas for businesses etc.

A modern development that will last the distance, Udinese club will ask the fans for ideas on how to beautify the stadium, what they wish to incorporate etc. Pozzo wants everyone involved to bring people together. Udinese boast a perfect business model and Pozzo is entirely the reason for that.

Dear Watford, you've bagged yourself a perfect president.

Udinese sold nearly €65m worth of players last season and still managed to finish one position higher than the year before. #dontdoubtthem

This confuses me mate , The italians did ask Nani and Duxbury to find them an English club , and we were indentified as a possibility many months ago following that request

Then I'm mistaken Layton as I thought they'd taken the idea of Watford to the Pozzo's initially.

No worries, I was having a bad day when I started questioning what was going on the other day.
