If you're not making the trip to Wigan on Saturday, over at Clarence Park we will be hosting Dulwich Hamlet in what has become a very popular fixture in the National League South calendar. This year also marks the 100th anniversary of a famous, record-holding FA Cup fixture between the two sides.

On 22nd November 1922, City and Hamlet played out a 1-1 draw in the 4th Qualifying Round of the FA Cup at Clarence Park. In the replay, the Saints' top striker, Wilfred 'Billy Minter', scored SEVEN goals...! Sadly, he was on the losing side as Dulwich Hamlet scored eight goals to win the match. However, Billy's eight goals are still a FA Cup record - for scoring the most goals for a losing team! (Read the full story:

Tickets are available online and on the day at the turnstiles. Hornets season ticket holders pay concession prices - plus we also have discounted admission for Under 21s as well as special deals for families.

Does John Frendo still play for Saints?
I have a mildly interesting story about him.

Hope St Albans manage to have a proper stab at promotion this season, they had a great first half with an impressive cup run last season but tailed off badly.

No, he left a season after we got promoted to the National League South. I expect he's still driving his taxi around London however

    Aha!
    Like father like son then?!
Did he ever pass to a team mate?
I friend went to watch him in his junior days and all his father would say was " shoot John" or "run John". The word pass was as alien to him as it was to his sister on a tennis court!

Frendo was a very good non-league target man and number nine but Conference South was probably about his limit. He didn't have the most expansive game but he did have an eye for goal.

One of the best stories about Frendo was that in 2014 he missed an FA Cup 4th qualifying round tie against Concord Rangers because he had tickets for El Clasico and went to watch Real Madrid v Barcelona instead. St Albans lost the match 1-0 and missed out on a potentially lucrative first round tie. Fair to say the clubs management, his teammates and the fans weren't all that happy.

His girlfriend (now wife) bought the tickets as a surprise birthday present - so John and the club only found out that the top scorer would be missing from such an important fixture only a few days before the big weekend....

I had heard that tale from someone,I can't recall who and it resonates however innocent he was of the event.
His sister was a decent tennis player although given her reluctance to move she would have been better steered towards golf.

She was due to play in a first team match for Cuffley away at Letchworth I think and there was no sign of her at the meet at Cuffley.

Our president just happened to be captain ( odd as he was male but good as he was and is extremely organised). He phoned the father as the girl was then 15 or so.

The father reported that she had forgotten and gone shopping to Lakeside. Brian offered to drive and collect her and take her to Letchworth! The father declined saying " she doesn't want to play".

Some poor third team player had to be dragged from her garden lounger and off to play. We won anyway as we had two decent pairs, but cards were marked.

A few years later she was selected for winter county cup for Hertfordshire, being played at Gosling. The team stayed at home as there was no need to pay for a hotel. We met up for meals post match.

The sister played number 6 singles on the Friday and lost. She didn't come out for the meal but the captain said " see you 8.30am tomorrow to play 6 again".*

Come 8.45am no sign. The captain called the home. " She's not well and can't play". The captain was NOT impressed. Not even the courtesy of letting her know. She was never selected for Hertfordshire again.

Yet her father rejected ( a year or two before) a grant of £1,000 from the LTA, telling David Felgate, the head of performance, that she should have more!

Unbelievable family! Suffice to say not team players.

    * Two courts per match so 6&5 play at 9am followed by 4&3,2&1 and doubles etc.

Surprised this should be such a popular fixture, I wouldn’t expect the clubs to be rivals being 25 miles apart, which is a lot in London. Still the bit about one of their players scoring 7 in an FA Cup replay and still being in the losing team is fascinating.

Anyway Dulwich seem to be a bit of a bogey team for St Albans - last season they won there 4-3 and today won 2-1 despite being average at best on both occasions.
