I was very pleased when Allardyce was picked for England manager as it seemed very likely that would ensure Sunderland would slip back and almost certainly help Watford finish above them. That has happened (unless Moyes pulls some amazing miraculous rabbit out of a hat).

Imagine if just 2 months later Eddie Howe then got the poisened chalice? I think with him at the helm they'll be fine this year, but without him? That could be a real struggle.

Unless of course they give it to Southgate permanently, which really would signify a new low for England.

Just the thought of the most boring man on the planet being England manager makes me feel utterly sick.

Think Southgate will get it. Won't cause any PR problems, can't really fail to qualify and the FA don't really care beyond that.

Not so sure. He seems quite corruptible. He deliberately missed a penalty so he could cash in on a pizza advert, but he was born in Watford so at least he does have that going for him.

Shame big Sam would have won us the next 3 world cups. I'd go for Paul Gascoigne as no one would understand what he s talking about, so no chance of being caught with sting operation.

Well he might have a few skeletons in his closet!

Southgate didn't want the job before...

Southgate, jeez, never managed properly and he's got the charisma of a dead vole. We may as well just resign from international football it it comes to that.

    Bad timing,

Sam could have waited a week or 2 before he dragged English football to a new low in the grubby, money grabbing greed image we now portray to the world - our Troy was just about to get the call ...

Eddie Howe won't pick Deeney ...

If Wenger can be tempted into joining up next summer when his contract is up, Southgate should be able to steer us through the qualifiers prior to that.

Otherwise I can't see past Pardew (or maybe Hoddle).

Would they go back for Hoddle bearing in mind he was sacked for off field comments to the press too?

Pardew is another who might have a dubious past?

It'll be Wenger. His contract is up at the end of the season and he was 1st choice last time. Southgate as caretaker until then.

Better wait and see what our information comes out from the Telegraph over the next few days. I really hope we are not part of this:

"The Telegraph began investigating corruption in English football last year after receiving information that specific managers, officials and agents were taking or receiving cash payments to secure player transfers. Over the coming days the Telegraph will detail how:

The assistant manager of a high-profile football club accepted a £5,000 cash “bung”
Ten managers were named by players’ agents as taking bribes to fix player transfers
Two well-known managers discussed becoming ambassadors for the same fictitious firm as Sam Allardyce
Another high-profile manager admitted his players broke FA rules by betting on their own games but he failed to report it
A senior figure at a Premier League club helped undercover reporters to formulate a plan to bribe managers"

Appoint Howe before the weekend so we can thrash them and then find he is no good and sack him next week :)

Speaking as someone who has the unfortunate task of removing dead voles from my home, courtesy of Arthur Virgil Dangerous,I feel you are being uncommonly harsh to the rodent!

I have an hunch it will be Pardew, for no other reason than he has the irritating habit of giving all his players nicknames. This is essential for the new man.

    Howe will be after him.

Eddie Howe please. Inexperienced bla bla bla.

Who cares. He'll play attacking football. He'll play the youngsters and give some 'unfashionable' players a go too. We might conceded a few more goals but it'll at least be enjoyable to watch.

Got to the stage where don't care about watching England play. Qualifiers are boring , friendlies are pointless and when it gets to tournaments.........

Thought Big Sam was the best fit

Very depressing to hear the support from many ex players for Big Sam. In what particular job do you actively go out to get extra income when paid so well, take the mickey about someone's speech impediment and do nothing to discourage circumventing rules and regulations re transfers

Listening to Jason Cundy of Talk Sport last night had to turn off. He effectively was saying it was the FA's fault in not providing guidance to Big Sam and saying we needed more of his sort as we were too nice on the international stage and if we cheated like other countries do we would do much better. He blindingly ignores the fact that most countries have better players and we do dive and play act already .

    England a laughing stock

Don't want changes to cut down teams in league or mid winter break to help the national team, we will never be good enough and if we do cut down on fixtures all that will happen will be that the big boys arrange some lucrative friendlies

    #1 - We're not high profile enough
#2 - Apart from Suarez and Amrabat I don't think QSF had any hand whatsoever in transfers last season, and even those were recommended by QSF.
#3 - Doubt QSF or Mazzarri are well-known enough.
#4 - This is extremely serious, no player (or anyone who works for a club) or referee from the top level down to the 4th tier are allowed to place any football bets at all, below 4th tier no player (or club officials) can bet on a match or competition they're involved in. *
#5 - Could be anyone but I take senior figure to mean a CEO.

    * Note to reids: You said you were doing scouting for Barnet, whether you are counted as club staff or not you ought to clarify whether the rule applies to you. Theoretically you would also be subject to a worldwide ban on betting on any football.

Top of the job spec criteria will have to be a lack of gullibility and having no involvement in, knowledge of or proximity to the financial side of player transfers. Might narrow down the field somewhat.

Interesting, hadn't thought about that, find it pretty unlikely as i've not signed a contract or anything of the sort, nor do I have any contact with any of the first team staff or anyone related to match-day.

He's taking charge of the Under-21's while Southgate is in charge of the senior side.

Which means we are one Southgate scandal away from Aidy Boothroyd being England manager.

    Please. Happen.

I can't imagine we'd be involved in any sort of transfer scandals, the Pozzos are thrifty buggers, agents must hate them as they only ever want to pay the bare minimum.

Is the FA still bent on appointing someone English? If so, then there aren't really any "big" names left. Eddie Howe does play decent football, but I would say Sean Dyche would be equally as good a fit. I know people say Howe is inexperienced, and I'd say Dychey might be equally so, but I think they're gritty enough to do a decent job, although I can see Howe calling up the likes of Callum Wilson (ahead of Troy).

Wenger won't join England, I don't believe. He's probably going to keep signing new deals at Arsenal until he retires (which may be in the coming years).

I'm actually going to curveball this and suggest someone like Vincente Del Bosque. He's not with Spain any more, but he did manage to get a good haul of trophies in a short (and reasonably recent) space of time. Outside possibility?

Can we get Mr. Tumble in to do it? Fits the role perfectly. Either him or Keith Chegwin.
