On the way home now, but James were absolutely superb tonight. A career spanning set with songs from across their 40 year history. They even played Waltzing Along, which I’m led to believe isn’t a regular feature in the sets and is my favourite song of theirs.

Crystal Palace bowl is a stunning venue too.

I've been getting back into Angels & Airwaves recently. For those unaware, it's Tom Delonge from Blink 182's side project/other band. Their most recent offering 'Lifeforms' is pretty good following the very shaky 'Dream Walker', which soured me on them for while. I was due to be going to see them last year but it got cancelled due to Covid (???) and now Blink have reformed, I think I'll be waiting a while for an AVA tour.

New Babymetal, featuring Tom Morello the lead guitarist from Rage Against The Machine, you can hear the influence immediately. Fun video and the song slaps hard.

Is Olivia Rodrigo the nicest person in music right now? I believe so. What a lovely person she comes across as.

Vampire is my song of 2023 to date.

The new Spanish Love Songs album is excellent - had it on a heavy rotation this week. Definitely going to be grabbing a ticket to the tour when they go on sale next week.

I had a long drive with my 13 year old son recently and he has gone gangsta. Baseball cap, braids 'n'shades and a big baggy 'tupac' t-shirt.

He put his music on the car stereo for many, many miles and many, many hours. It was so ugly. Some of it I've heard, but most of it not. Travis Scott (sp?) was one he played a lot. What a complete knobcheese that potty-mouthed, man-child is. Makes Troy Deeney seem like Oscar Wilde.

As for the music, it was all shotgun clicking noises and poppacap inya ass lyrics. I joked about it with him and said it was FNSB music and that has stuck.

FNSB refers to the four words that get repeated constantly in every single song he played more or less. F you can guess. N I'm sure you can guess too. S for sĥit and B for beeyitch. Horrible words.

We use it all the time now, especially in times of mild disappointment. He wants a mint ice cream, but they've run out. We look at each other and say "FNSB" and then try not to laugh...

My 14 year old nephew is going through the same phase. He's started dressing like Ali G. He played me some of the stuff he has piped into his skull via the headphones that are clamped to his ears 24/7 the other day. It's just noise with someone mumbling about their 'bitch' over the top of it. Awful.

Our grandsons (aged 14 and 18) were over ours recently and whilst they were waiting to watch the footy on Sky we had some 'nostalgia station' on the TV featuring '60's and '70's stuff. A mix of singles but also some other stuff including the Dead, early Genesis, VDGG, Flying Burrito Brothers, Byrds, Cream, Hendrix and the obligatory 'British Invasion' bands.
Whilst none of it convinced them to dash out and buy any of it, the one thing that seemed to strike them was the variety and DEPTH of the sounds on offer, especially considering a lot of it was coming through very basic mixing systems. Whilst they were (unsurprisingly) convinced most of the performers must have been 'on something', they both expressed admiration at the fact and way the performers PLAYED THEIR INSTRUMENTS in such a way that different groups sounded so different from each other. They are also clearly aware of the way modern recording tools have homogenised the sound of many performers to such an extent they sound very similar.
The fact they are both musical, playing guitar, piano and drums, no doubt had an effect on their comments, but it was interesting to hear how they were almost a little bored by what's on offer currently.

That's great that you created a shared term and memory in the face of terrible music. I couldn't agree more - it's devoid of humour, insight, affection and observation.

Walked into my 15 year old daughter's room last week to hear a song where some young chap was singing about thrusting his old boy into some unfortunate young ladies back passage, which according to the singer, she had of course insisted he did. Women get a rough enough ride in life, yet there seems to be an acceptance and praise for these grubby little sex pests, along with their songs about ownership of guns, expensive motor vehicles, jewellery and other items they need to desperately prove they are not inadequate.

I like neither, but found it bizarre a while ago where Billie Eilish was hauled over the coals for a video she made mouthing along to a song by Tyler the Creator which contained a racial slur. No one seemed to have any criticism for Mr The Creator, who had written the song itself, containing the word.

I’m really, really, really into The Beaches lately. I think SEJ bigged them up when he was interviewed before Glasto.

Their album came out a week or so ago and I’ve had it on a pretty heavy rotation. It’s very straightforward indie but catchy as hell. Highlights are ‘Blame Brett’, ‘What Doesn’t Kill You Makes You Paranoid’, ‘Everything Is Boring’ and ‘If A Tree Falls’.

They’re playing Tufnell Park Dome in November so I’ll definitely try to grab a ticket.

Green Day have released another new song today, ‘Look Ma, No Brains!’, and again it’s very catchy, very simple pop punk.
