Any advice on whats better to buy from, private or trade sellers?

    Pros and cons.

Private are a bit cheaper but you don't get any form of warranty. Privates are easier to haggle with though.

TBH you might find a lack of motors at dealers in your price range. The Scrappage scheme seems to have killed quite a bit of that off and independents get a lot of their stuff filtered down from part exchanges.

Make sure you do your checks before you hand over the cash, never meet in a car park etc etc. you'll get a better price privately.

£2000, is that just the insurance?

I'd recommend looking at what cars are in the lowest insurance groups then look at what Cude did with the advanced driving course to knock money off the insurance for the early years. My own experiences, (many years ago), were that the best thing for a new driver was to learn how to work on the car and save money by doing a lot of the maintenance work yourself. Consider a Ford for low cost parts and easy maintenance.

Cheers, we had a quick scan a while ago but it was quite confusing to me, some corsas were in the cheapest group some wernt was all dependent on how powerful they were, obviously. But no me and mother goose are splitting it between us, 2000 for the car, she will contribute whatever she decides to that, but the cheaper the car the more she will contribute towards the insurance if that makes sense.

So to buy the car and insure it 1st party what we looking at total cost wise? 3500?

I reckon around 4000 mate, seriously insurance for us is a joke being first time drivers and all that, plus if your looking at fully comp then your talking 2000+ for a 1.2, unless your a female ofcourse.

Get a 1.0 Polo, they're cheap and reliable, I think. Can't comment on the insurance as I think its different over here, than it is in England.

Mine was 3,300. Renault Clio cost me 2k. insurance 1,3k. Isn't cheap. Would recommend Clios, cheap insurance, and mine has been reliable, and seems to be built like a tank.

Wouldn't the cheapest way (even cheaper than a sex-change) be as a named driver on mother goose's insurance?

I'm not sure how insurance works. But wouldn't that mean he couldn't build up his no claims? If i've understood what you're saying?

That's highly illegal, just as bad as not declaring modifications.

You can on certain policies, depends who you go with.

Get a Ford and I'll lend a hand on anything that goes wrong/needs doing the best I can.

What you talking about? My kids are all named drivers on our policies.

  18. Prentice

If they drive the car most then it's illegal for them to be named drivers on your policy, it's called Insurance Fronting. If they use the car on the odd occasion whereas you are the regular user then it's fine.

Insurers give cheaper quotes to people going on as named drivers on another person's policy because it's under the condition that the policy holder is the main driver of the car, and as I said, the named driver has the odd use. If they knew that the named driver was in actual fact the main user of the car, they'd give you a higher premium because of the risk assessment, naturally.

Do they still build there no claims bonuses up?

Sorry, see what you mean. My went/go away to uni and don't take cars with them so they aren't driving all the time. If he isn't going to be using the car all the time it's much cheaper, but being a 17yo boy he'll probably want to drive everywhere.

It's a bit of a general grey area if I'm honest, not a lot of people know about it and a lot of people unknowingly do it, but unfortunately, a lot of people do it knowing full well what they're doing, and as a result a lot of claims get wrongfully (and rightfully) dismissed.

So, there I was driving along last night, and out of nowhere one of my tyres just like exploded.

T'was a bit crap to say the least lol

Tyre blow outs can be scary, especially if you're doing some speed, not to mention can be very dangerous.

All the more reason to check your tyre pressures, tread and general wear regularly.

Yer. Car moved over to another lane but thankfully there was no cars there at all.

I went to the tyre place on Sunday and yer man there goes "they'll definitely last you for another week"

I would say complain for negligence but it's just his word.

  26. UEA_Hornet

Not to mention that by being only a named driver they don't really any kind of worthwhile no claims bonus. In the long run it's better just to take the plunge and take it out in your own name from the start.

In respect of the legal issue I would say prosecution would be rather unlikely though technically possible.

  27. Prentice

    Prentice Administrator

Definitely, though Insurers will use it if they can to escape paying out.

  28. UEA_Hornet

    UEA_Hornet First Team Captain

The 'insurance fronting' prohibition? For sure they will. Their refusal to pay out won't lead to a prosecution though.

Still just as large a thing to consider, a £4,000 bill to fix the guys car you smashed into won't be well received!

  30. nascot

As far as the insurance company is concerned the main driver would be Mother Goose. If they found out this wasn't the case they wouldn't be happy and could take legal action although obviously it would be difficult for them to find out.

Edit: Maybe I should read the whole thread before replying :forehead:

    Haha.

It's funny you say that, there are a lot of cases of Insurers employing Investigation companies to find it out on suspicious cases.

I'm just not really in favour of 17yo having their own cars. Apart from the ridiculous cost there is the lack of judgement. For example, a few days after passing the test my youngest wanted to borrow the car to go on a trip round the M25 with some friends. Because it's not her car I could say "No, you haven't driven on a motorway yet and the first time you do it is not going to be the M25 with your mates in the back distracting you and music blaring". If she'd had her own car she would have done it. But maybe that's just my parental control freak streak. Most 17 yo I know with their own cars seem to write them off after a few weeks. That's what's reflected in the premium.

I wish most mothers were like you instead of those who just ***** the best part of £10K on cars and insurances and fixing them when they smash into something on their special little ******** cherubs.
