in Nice injuring a number of people (more local reports say there have been fatalities)

Some form of terrorist attack given the reports of shots being fired and the lorry travelling at high speed?

    Horrendous

At least 30 dead, 100 injured, number will almost certainly rise. Possibly as much as 50 dead

I've seen pictures and video on twitter and the scene looks like something out of Syria or Iraq, hard to believe this is happening in France

All this has taken place while the country is under a state of emergency as well. France appears helpless in the face of this threat and drastic measures will be needed sooner rather than later. People will act surprised when the French vote in the far right Le Pen government, but who could blame them? How much more are the people of France expected to take?

Islamic extremism may not represent a traditioanl state of army, but no question, Europe is at war right now

    60 dead now apparently

Once again the attackers are "known to security services", how many times are we going hear this? We've been too soft for too long. If you're "known" to security services in this context you should not have the opportunity to do things like this, its insane

There's something far worse about an attack like this when compared to a bomb or a gunman. Bombs and guns are supposed to be frightening. Lorries are not. Using a basic tool that is located literally everywhere seems a much better way to spread fear, since we are confronted with them every day and that thought is always at the back of your mind.

Hopefully the casualties have been overstated significantly, but the early pictures don't look good.

****ing scum how many more times, how can the authorities defend against a bloody truck, fingers crossed the numbers are not as high as they say, have the scum waited until after the euros for when the French security may have dropped their guard. Poor poor victims family's, what a waste and what the scum achieved ?

73 reported dead now, guns and grenades found in the truck.

Apparently that road was left open.

In what sense? Barring reinforced concrete barriers any road is basically 'open' to a 15 tonne truck.

They've achieved exactly what they wanted and exactly what their ideology instructs them to do

They have killed 'infidels', thats as simple as it is now. They don't even go after high profile or symbolic '9/11' type attacks any more, its all about numbers, maximum death with minimum hardware, soft targets, pure slaughter

Same low cost guerilla tactics which have been used against Israelis for decades

These scum will go as low as they are able to, they will never surprise me, there is only so much the authororities can do, they are further than ever to find a solution, where ever next, what next, just a matter of time before Britain is hit again,

84 dead now, time for the the gloves to come off, the usual suspect apologist will be blaming everyone and everything apart from these scum.

Law abiding French family's celebrating their independence at a holiday resort, to end like this, thoughts with you, not sure what else to say, best stay off the keyboard I think

Afghan war, Iraq war, Syrian conflict, the Lybia uprising etc, etc........ we in the west are reaping what we have allowed our governments to sow. Two wrongs dont make a right I know but all the things you describe above have happened in the middle east sponsored by the west and its allies. Remember innocents died because of western meddling also and you get an idea why these people are so upset and see it as their mission to gain revenge.

    Here we go...

"I'm annoyed at the west, so I'll get my revenge by killing a load of innocent tourists. People will understand me!"

What a load of total bollox.

  20. cyaninternetdog

    cyaninternetdog Forum Hippie

It isnt bollox though is it. Innocents and children have died in there thousands because of western actions, done in our name so we all get the blame by them, just like people will start blaming a whole religion for a few peoples actions. It is a tragic event no doubt but dont let emotions cloud your judgement.

Utter rubbish, people who spread these excuses and culture of apologism are part of the problem and stop us dealing with the root causes

What was Belgium "reaping" when they were attacked? They've never bombed the Middle East.

What are the hundreds of thousands of Muslims/Christians/Jews in the Middle East and Africa "reaping" when they are slaughtered every single year? None of them have ever bombed the Middle East either

Islamic Extremism is a vile death cult which does not need an excuse to "gain revenge". It seeks to dominate the world and wipe out all those who do not subscribe to its fascistic ideology. It may use evidence of Western action as propaganda to further its goals, but it would never stop doing what it is doing if the West unilaterally agreed to stop intervening in the Middle East.

The attackers at the Bataclan chose their targets because they believed Western infidels drinking alcohol and enjoying a music show was 'haram'. The same justification was used by ISIS in Iraq to justify the slaughter of the local Real Madrid fan club who were enjoying the Champions League Final. This is an ideological war, Islamic extremists now attack humanity and culture itself

Time to wake up and realise that the old Noam Chomsky/Jermey Corbyn/Owen Jones rubbish about "reaping what you sow" is no longer true. We have moved well beyond that stage, this is a global ideological war... the cat is well and truly out of the bag

A very small minority have put all westerners and western culture in the frame, a growing group of people put all of Islam in the frame for a small minoirties actions. By seeing that all of this is wrong no matter what side of the fence you are on is waking up.

I must say, my first comment here was to pick up on something cyaninternetdog said, and I don't think it was appropriate I did that first up, so I apologise. I should really have focused on the people who have died so far (84) and state what a horrible attack this is yet again. Just awful.

    Opinions/political bickering can wait.

Obviously not if you read my other posts in this thread. All I see is a vicious circle of hate which must end.

  29. But it's not a vicious circle any more. One side has an end game which involves a world caliphate.

First and foremost, thoughts to all those affected by this senseless and hideous act of mass murder.

And, cyan, i can't speak for GOBE but I can tell you that I come to exactly the same conclusion simply by looking at what ISIS itself has stated, ie

"When it declared its territories as a caliphate, Isis stated its ultimate aim as the establishment of a single, global state under its interpretation of Islamic rule."

    Seems pretty clear to me.

  33. cyaninternetdog

How many people are in ISIS? Exactly, not enough to gain what they want. They arent even an organised group in the West. Just a few nutters with the same ideology. The real ISIS arent even winning their war in the middle east. Shame we arent talking about the people who fund the real ISIS isnt it.

  34. But enough to bring death and misery on an industrial scale, and not influenced one way or another by the actions of the West 5, 10, 15, 20 years ago. They are a death cult. The first task in hand is to utterly crush them in Iraq and Syria to expose them for the losers they are. Deal with Assad later. Root out these scumbag fanatics now. A total stand of solidarity involving Arab states, Nato - utterly crush and humiliate them. Anyone who currently has an Isis fighter in their family who feels anything but shame is going to have those sympathies whether or not we annihilate their evil thick offspring, so don't bother about 'continuing the circle'.
