http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-beds-bucks-herts-32421392 Funny this came up, as I got annoyed with one yesterday. As I was cycling to work, just as I approached the crossing they stepped out to let one person across. All they had to do was wait 5 seconds and I would have been gone and they could cross behind me... but no, get me to stop from 15mph and then have to pedal off again. I dont mind stopping for people on crossings, but these people need to use some common sense sometimes.
The one at the top of my road is like that. Very busy traffic, doesn't wait for a batch of kids, just stops the road every time one ambles along. It causes chaos and is one of the reasons I get to work 30 mins early, out just before he starts. However, in their defence, kids would just run across the road otherwise, one will end up getting run over and then they'll probably be prosecuted for not doing their job. Zebra crossings are the offender here. They should be replaced by pedestrian lights. Most traffic junctions that have a fair volume from all sides should be converted to roundabouts.
I live right by a primary school and every morning when I go to work I have the same conversation about the lollipop lady there. Instead of rounding people up and letting loads of people cross at once, she will jump in the road everytime somebody needs to cross. Therefore every ten seconds she walks out onto the road, stopping the traffic continuously for about an hour rather letting it flow for about a minute or two before allowing people to cross. She's utterly useless. The worst thing is, when ADULTS are crossing the road, she decides to run out and stop the traffic for them. I mean, FFS, they are ADULTS.
Got one of them in Hemel and she works at a pelican xing. Presses the button. waits for the green man, walks into the road brandishing her lolly pop and then ushers adults across the road. Very, very sheepish red faced adults .
