Times are tough , Laptop on way out , wonderded at the main differences between a Laptop and net ? or Notebook ? , as the net/note books look a lot cheaper , needs to be wireless , but we only online bank , ebay etc at home , no gaming or such like

    Any advice welcome

Netbook basically does less, it'll just about cope with internet browsing and emails etc but if you want to do anything like Microsoft Office or iTunes for example, it'll start to strain it.

I'd go for a Laptop, what's your budget?

Alls it needs to do is have a reliable wireless connection and xp at least , doesnt need excel etc as got that at work , needs a bit of storage though but i do have a few 4gb sticks...

when i say times are tough , im not joking i have seen these notebooks etc for £229....?!

Netbook will be fine for you but two things that I can't cope with are:

Small screen/resolution, fits less on the page which can be annoying for some websites.

Smaller keyboard, which can make typing more difficult.

Can sometimes find a bargain in there or any other sites refurb bit.

    I know sod all about computers so I don't know if this fits the bill for you or not but my brother has this for sale;

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dell inspiron mini 10:10. In white, mint condition (aside from I need to grab a new charger from PC world as I snapped a prong).

Has a size specific carry case, all boxed etc too. Usual wireless internet etc.

Cost new was £300. Had it for 18 months or so but very rarely used - shouldn't have got it really!

£150 delivered and guaranteed for a month to get going.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If it is of interest then let me know so we can arrange it.

A netbook should be fine for your needs. I'd suggest an iPad simply because it is a fantastic gadget but at the higher cost it doesn't really compete with a generic netbook.

Yep Dad's got one of them. PRetty good, little slow maybe. If you're not fussed about windows 7 you can get the Compaq version of the same machine cheaper.

Have a look at the Dell outlet as well, can sometimes pick up a good bargain there.

i would personally go for a generic (non-brand name) one as there is no difference in quality what so ever from those to the cheap brand models. Just the logo on the front. I used to work at HP and know what I'm talking about.

Also I'd suggest you try and find a 13'' as the extra size will add loads more usability. 10'' is quite small.

ok , cheers lads , is it worth going for one with windows 7 or is XP SP3 fine as well ?

I know people that have bought refurbished laptops in the past and had no problems with them (come in original box with charger etc and no scratches / marks). A lot of them come with 12 months warranty included and they can be a lot cheaper than the brand new ones.

All depends if you are happy with a used one.

Sometimes they're just old demo models.

    Either / or.

7 is better for netbooks as there's a version which takes less processing power however everything is slightly different enough to annoy you. XP is ok and I must be the only person on the planet that doesn't mind vista either.

Just go with what's cheapest as for what you're doing the OS won't make much difference.

Don't mean to treat you like a simpleton Leyton but you know most netbooks don't have CD/DVD drives, right? An example would be the one you linked to earlier. Don't know how that affects you.

no worries mate , yeah i do know that , not needed really for us as i can pu stuff on removeable drives for when it might be needed (data , pictures etc)

    what is this `windows 7 starter` i have been reading about , a `diet` version of normal windows 7 is it ?

  27. hornmeister

    hornmeister Tired

Yep. Does everythign you'll need and doesn't have all the bloatware that other versions do which will slow a less powerful netbook.

I read this whole thread, but have nothing useful to add, or any interest in buying a laptop.

Either it's been beautifully written, or I need to get out more.

I am using a netbook now and it copes with Office, iTunes and the internet all running at the same time comfortably. But thats not any strenuous (sp?) websites, as its usually just for uni research.

Ah, my nephew has that Dell Inspiron mini and it basically freezes or runs dead slow when iTunes/Office is used, and that's from factory, not after he downloaded loads of porn or whatever

  34. scummybear

    scummybear Reservist

Oh, so it runs even slower now then!

I must have got lucky with my choice of make then. Mine's a MSI Wind, but its a few years old now - still running quite well though.

Take the factory installed antivirus software off and install avast instead. Will make all the difference.
