No surprise. This is the new Watford. We've got no money so have to retain aging broken down players. This is the progressive new future. Are the pennies dropping yet? .....nope....of course not.

Clear to see the hierarchy are not expecting anything other than trying to retain a Championship status if at all possible. Zero ambition.

This going to be like Janmaat?

Give him a new deal then pay him off months later .

Andrews will be sold either in the summer or the following windows so the need to tie down our only other RB at the club is a sensible move. The 4 years was probably to ensure Ngakia had an offer too good to refuse.
I dont understand why we dont make more use of the loan system, eapecially with Giorgi signing permanently. Ive always liked the idea of try before you buy and seems a missed opportunity in January

Or. A novel idea. We could let the contract of a poor quality player who is hideously injury prone expire. And then use the transfer and free agent and loan market to source a superior alternative?

It is beyond my comprehension that someone would think this is a “sensible move”.

Yes, but he did hit a wicked shot against Birmingham that hit the post. That’s got to be worth another 4 years surely?

Firstly, how long was left on his current contract?

    Secondly, what was he on?

If he was on for arguments sake £20,000 a week for a remaining 2 years, and this “renewed” contract is £10,000 a week for 4 years, then I can’t see what the issue is?

Apparently out of contract this summer .

Maybe a year or two but 4 seems rather extreme I think for someone who is very injury prone .

We’ve actually doubled his wages to £60k a week, for arguments sake. It’s even worse than we thought.

Wouldn’t surprise me to be fair.

Was kind of both Asprilla and Hoedt to slash their own wages in half to make it happen.

If that’s the case, then a 4 year deal is certainly odd. Again though, it really depends on how much he’s now being paid.

Maybe he’s been offered to have his mortgage paid off and now has to spend the next 4 years “playing” for free whenever he ain’t in the medical room.

I was going to say unfcukingbelievable. But it isn't. It's veryfcukingbelievable under this ownership.

Starting to genuinely believe our only hope really is if Gino goes to jail. He deserves community service for this deal alone.

He's young but he's League One level at best and has been for a long time. Added to the moronic contract extension of Bachmann we are now holding on to two mistake-prone players for another four/five years. Livermore and Hamer make sense in a way. Both have really stepped up this season but I would of thought due to their age a year tops is probably suitable. Ngakia should of been moved on when we got rid of WTE and Cathcart. He's a nice bloke but his injury record is a bit like Janmatt, in he's made of glass.

Another phwoar move by Gino, to underline the statement:

    "Gino Does Business Properly"

Speechless. Actually that's a lie, it's exactly what I expect of the Pozzo circus.

I'm sure Jeremy is a nice bloke but he's injured more often than not and when he does get on the pitch he's a League One player.

4 year deal? I reckon he will eventually join the ranks of Blissett, Jenkins & Sherwood as one of the few that play for us in all 4 divisions.

Aside from the fact his contract expires at end of season, your example of a player accepting the same cash for a longer contract would be idiotic due to the time value of money and future earning potential.

I've shaken my head and wept a few tears at the news so now I'm going to try and look at any reason(s) as to why this has happened

With Charlton supposedly sniffing around in the January window just gone, is it a case of signing him up now or run the risk of only having Ryan Andrews contracted for the right back position come the summer?

If we are as penniless as the majority say we are, are the club cutting their cloth accordingly by handing out this new contract rather than having to pay a transfer fee with money we don't have, sign a free agent for a signing on fee which we don't have or promote another youngster from the academy which, if I'm honest, we don't have

4 years is overly long but is it a case of guaranteeing having someone at the club next season or continue having Tom D-B stand in as and when?

As for his injuries, for the sake of objectivity I thought I'd try to see what has plagued Ngakia since he joined Watford

As far as I can find, in 2021 he suffered a hip injury, a hamstring injury and suffered from Covid
2022 he had two separate hamstring injuries
2023 a 'baja forma' (torn piriformis)
2024 a bone injury which ended up as a fracture

The medical department has long been seen as a bit of a joke and I'm optimistically wondering if the current staff have resolved a long term leg/back problem

His hip injury and the torn piriformis can all show as problems with the hamstring (apparently) when the reality is it could be down to a nerve problem in the lower back, similar or actually sciatica. I've also read previously how continued hamstring injuries have been diagnosed when the reality was a problem with the lower back. It could be some of his absences or any prolonged time out was down to misdiagnosis

If that is the case those muscle injuries will hopefully lessen and he could be available more often. Whether he's good enough is another question but getting him on the field more often would be a stride in the right direction (usually dummying the opposing player and cutting inside before giving the ball away)

All conjecture but what little interest and hope I have for the first XI means rather than just show my exasperation, I have to look at possible reasons - however far-fetched

Those aren't the only two options. It shouldn't be very difficult at all to replace Ngakia in the summer.

According to capology he was on £2500 per week, therefore if they doubled his wages it’s still quite a low wage for a championship player! Much more value than ince’s 30k pw 2 year deal!

  30. oxhey67

    oxhey67 Squad Player

It shouldn't be but it will cost money to do so. According to the masses, we don't have money

He is (was) out of contract this summer coming so by tying him down with this contract it's guaranteeing a senior right-back at the club and one who also appears happy to be here (cue jokes by some about stealing a living)

That to me is the reasoning behind the contract

edit: As he was going to be out of contract, Ngakia would also have been able to negotiate with clubs outside of England now wouldn't he, or is that 3 months from the end of his contract? No matter what the general consensus is on here with regards to his quality, there'll always be somebody out there willing to offer him a contract

Can’t really add anything more to what has already been said.

A completely awful injury prone player that should’ve been let go at the end of his contract has been given a 4 year deal.

There isn’t a club down to non league that should be giving this player a four year deal, there is simply no logical reason for it and I’m baffled as to why anyone is trying to rationalise it?

That’s him set till he’s about 27/28. He’d do well to save and invest it because he’ll have a Matthew Briggs style career trajectory after he’s finished here.
