33 on my mountain bike (on grass as well) and 39 on the road bike (I really didn't want to go any faster!). I will top 40mph once I've grown a pair...

Mine is in KMPH, and I think I've hit about 55

Nice to see Moog's gone metric!

I've hit just under 60 kmph with the wind in my back but on a straight road. It was only when I realised that the brakes on the bike were nowhere near good enough to stop me and the bike should a car pull out from a drive along the road that I decided to slow down a little.

I am much more comfortable around 25-30 kmph.

    I'm a complete mishmash.

Weight in the gym is in kg, speed in my car in mph, speed when running or cycling in KMPH, my bodyweight in stones and lbs, my food in grams, my land in hectares and my boats in cubits.

That's one thing i've always ignored.... Cars pulling out, thanks for reminding me. Do you ride a road or mountain bike Kris?

I see its the season of "Let's take the horse out for a dump and not clean it up after"

    Scottish isn't European now?

Well it's getting closer to becoming more European, the Scottish Goverment are thinking about switching to driving on the right handside, the country will be having a referendum next summer to decide, as well moving the clocks to be aligned with mainland Europe.

For what reason? To prove they can be independant? There isn't one benefit to switching over.

Cyclists, as the nights are drawing in quickly, what lights can you recommend for night cycling along the canal? I'm thinking it's got to be something bl**dy powerful.

I run with two lights, a Cats Eye cube and a Smart Lunar 25 lux. The Cube is ok, but the Smart is much brighter and has three modes, full, medium and flash. Also the rear light I got with it is the dogs *******s and so bright I'm not allowed to use it when cycling with a mate as it gives him a head ache. Only down side is I find the button for the front light is a bit fiddly especially when in mid cycle

    Going cheap in Amazon http://www.amazon.co.uk/Smart-Lunar...sr_1_3?s=sports&ie=UTF8&qid=1317758117&sr=1-3

I suggest a wetsuit and lifejacket as well as lights.

That looks very good! I might go for that ;)

Just a little update: Still riding in at least twice a week, so far the weather has been kind and the towpath is dry and manageable. I have a couple of very powerful lights on order for the darker mornings/evenings. On my stupidly heavy bike I averaged 12mph last week on the 13 mile jaunt in, but my god it hurt the next morning. After talking to a few "in the know" people here I probably will go for the bike to work scheme next March.

13mph isnt bad for an average speed on a MB, especially along a canal.

I havent been out for weeks, which is annoying as I went and did 5 rides in a week... felt really good and mullered some nasty hills, and have hardly been out now and will have lost the hard work I put in.. back to sq1

One of my colleagues is going to start riding in this week after seeing me do it successfully since July. He's got a good bike and worked out a decent route that will see him do half by road and half by canal. He wasn't going to wear a helmet until I showed him page 3 of this thread. Thanks Desmond, another one converted.

It was bl**dy cold this morning, but thermals, a good hat, gloves and 2 pairs of socks kept me warm enough. Her indoors just rang me and said the lights have turned up, so I'll charge them up when I get home and try them out later hopefully. Loads less bikes on the tow paths this week, lightweights!

480 towpath miles ridden since this thread began. Cheers for the advice so far.

ordered myself a 900 lumen LED torch with handlebar fitting yesterday on ebay for £18... little upgrade from my 125 lumen.

Think I'll try blinding some people one night soon.

900? I don't get out of bed for anything less than 1200 lumens!

    I'll review it later.

Still going Layts, not when the weather is cr4p, but minimum twice a week at the moment.

OMG - Torch porn. It's my one weakness.

I could knock consecutive ones out all day over a Maglite catalogue or a decent spotlight.

I went camping with the Missus over the summer and one of the nights she counted that I'd bought no fewer than 14 torches/lanterns and flashlights with us.

Anyone else here get rigid over a quality piece of luminating apparatus?

I have a coleman dual fuel camping lantern which is fantastic, but no, it doesn't simulate viagra for me.

Nobody on the camp site comes close to producing as much light from any of their sad little lights. It kicks a55.

Not really, but the distance takes too much out of me to do the trip every day. I can't do Wednesdays so I pick the best out of Monday or Tuesday, same for Thursday or Friday. Howling gale with sideways rain or an overcast but windless day? No brainer.

I actually enjoy cycling in the rain. Last Friday was fantastic cycling weather. The only complaint from me about rain is glasses getting covered and not being able to see, apart from that I find it rather refreshing and relaxing. Cycling in high winds doesn't matter either, adds to the fun.

I think not being able to see and being blown about by the wind might change your mind when you're 2 feet from the canal :naughty:.

Would you rather be 2 foot from a canal, or 1 foot from cars on the A41 :naughty:

just bought a second one as the first was brilliant, but TWO on the handlebars and night time offers no problems. My cycling buddy has two as well, so out on the paths and fields at night everything is as clear as day. Brilliant for the price

    sounds like a sexual position.

Burd on top in leather and you push up with such force that she launches in the air while shouting "give me turbo boost"
