Well they’re not mathematically down but they probably have even less chance of staying up than we have of messing up promotion.

Shocked to see Grimsby basically down with them too, when I started following football I saw them as a regular second tier club (they came up with us and Bristol City in 1997/98 after being relegated from Div. 1 only the previous season). Now it looks like they’re going back to non-league after taking six years to get out of it and spending only five seasons back in the FL.

Colchester are 9 pts clear with a big GD cushion, Barrow need an absolute maximum of 2 points to condemn Southend from 4 games. I don't personally remember Grimsby being in the 2nd tier, though my old PE teacher at Parmiters was a youth/reserve goalie for them around that time. I do remember the likes of Crewe and Gillingham being in the second tier, Dean Ashton is probably the most striking example of a one man team in football history lol

I was thinking of mentioning him in the post I made about Xisco on the Championship thread on Tuesday, as he's another ex-manager who was clearly not ready to manage at this level, after his Colchester side lost to leave them in relegation trouble in League 2. While I've never had any ill will towards him and never will, it just proves what a daft decision it was to leave him in charge of those final two games in 2019/20, and I'm not sure anyone will convince me that Pearson for sure wouldn't have got the minor upturn in results (a two goal defeat against Man City at worst and a draw at Arsenal) to keep us up.

We would have had to win a game though to stay up ?

I don’t think it would have made any difference tbh however harshly Pearson was done by.

No, this is what the table looked like the day before we faced Man City:

It was the heavy defeat that enabled Villa to leapfrog us on goal difference meaning we had to win at Arsenal on the final day to stay up. A 3-0 defeat would have meant that Villa would go above us on goals scored, a 2-0 and it would have still been in our hands and we would stay up by matching Villa's draw at West Ham.

Clearly something happened with Pearson that made his position untenable, I don’t think Gino just decided to sack him with two games to go due to results. It was probably something that ended up being completely unavoidable, one way or another.
