Over here in the West he's lauded as a a peacemaker and visionary but in the East he's generally despised. The Lithos would hear no arguments concerning his actions leading to them regaining their independence. Everything was countered by them pointing out 'his' ordering of an assault on Vilnius's TV Tower in Janaury '91 (against unarmed civilians) and 'his' ordering of a special forces raid on a Lithuanian border post the following April. The ethnic Russians in Vilnius used to accuse him of abandoning them and the Poles hated him for not reuniting Wilno with the Ojczyzna.
