That pub run by the Essex couple with a display of golliwogs has closed down. Like others, I am using the full name "golliwog" rather than sanitising it to "golly" as the media has done. The full name is better for appreciating the offensiveness. The pub has closed because the windows got put in, CAMRA expelled them from their guide, some of the big beer companies told them to stop selling their product and the pub servicing company that cleans the pipes etc said they wouldn't come anymore. The landlord has a long history of super racist Facebook and social media posts. Even with a golliwog hanging and a message about that's how they did it in Mississipi. Maybe I wouldn't go so far as putting the windows in, but otherwise I think the companies did well to freeze them out. And it's not often I praise companies.
A good lesson for the 'free speech' bunch who think that freedom of speech comes with freedom from consequences. The beer companies and so on decided that it was their right to choose whether to supply this pub or not. And the pub owner should – if they understand the meaning of their own words – acknowledge that the freedom of choice goes all ways. I hope they don't cry the victim of cancel culture after this. Pure democracy and free-market economics at work here – values that 10 minutes ago they were all in favour of. They love to say 'Go woke, go broke' but actually in the actual world it's often quite a different picture.
