In the book Catelyn Stark came back from the dead...did I miss that?

She did in the book. The red priest reanimated her in place of Beric Dondarrion. She couldn't talk, however because her throat had been cut (which is a bit inconsistent because Beric was sliced nearly in two by the hound but reformed nicely). In second life she was ruthless in her pursuit of vengeance against those she had felt had harmed her famsily. At this point Jaime and Brienne were still knocking around together on their way back from their inprisonment by the bloody mummers. Can't see why she'd come in to the tv show now. ,

I wonder what else Bran could be responsible for? Somebody at work said they saw a theory on the internet about Bran perhaps being responsible the Mad King? Also, was there any implications for Bran being touched by the white walker before waking up?

Also, not sure if it's in the books - but could Stansa be pregnant with Ramsay's kid, perhaps? Certainly wouldn't be surprised by such a twist. '

I do wonder that if Hodor gets zombified by the White Walkers, whether Bran will still be able to take control of him. Could provide a surprise death blow to the chief White Walker from a source he wasnt expecting

With the Ned Stark play and the Tower of Joy flashback the show seems to be trying it's best to remind us that history is always written by the victor, something which has been a theme throughout the entire series.

I expect that by the end of the season we will discover that the Mad King wasn't so mad at all.

Didn't enjoy last night's filler episode. In fact not watching it would not have made a difference in this season's storyline.

Agreed. I think it was the worst one so far this series. Tommen allowed himself to be manipulated by the High Sparrow and is now his puppet (no surprises there at Tommen is a weak king and not fit to rule). The Arya storyline has been a waste of time quite frankly, as she's gone back on training to become an assassin apparently. No surprises also that the identity of the black rider is Benjen Stark.

And also, where the **** are the sand snakes and what has happened to the Dorne storyline? Getting bored of Sam and Gilly now too. We all knew that Lord Tarly would turn out to be a ****, so again I don't know about you but this has been an underwhelming predictable episode for me.

  10. wfcmoog

thing is, the plot actually moved forward so quite a lot. Arya has left and now has the ***** girl trying to assassinate her (don't understand how she's allowed ro have suchlike a personal vendetta as it seems very unbecoming of a faceless man/woman - in fact the whole FM thing was **** on closer examination. Seemed more romantic as a legend but when you watch them they're just ****s).

Khaleesi is now ready to invade, Bran is to be the vanguard of the defence against he white walkers, Tonmen is a puppet King, Walder Frey is going to clash with the Blackfish etc. Unfortunately it was all revealed I such a dull way that nobody cares.

thats about right, I think there's just one or two things occuring that slow it all down a bit. It's all feeling like the reading the lord of the rings and not realising that sauron and saruman were not the same person. cersei has been in this season more than ramsey, despite ramsey being more important to the current plots, the religious fella is ******* me off, someone would have knifed him in the back by now. Arya is now on the run from the MFG's but that could have been 10 minutes not strung over 2 seasons. Characters go missing for a week after being a main part of the plot the week before, the white walkers are not very quick are they, they must have been marching for 5 seasons in a circle. Where the **** did Jon Snow go. Khaleesi has now decided to get 1000 boats and go to war, the same thing she decided in season 3 and 4 but never managed.

Would have been a good episode if Sam stood up to his father. Bet his sword turns out to be magic or something.

Yeah the plot did move but just in a way that is forgettable. We get Jaime sent up to the Riverlands, the reemergence of the Blackfish, Arya cut loose, Daenerys reunited with her dragon, Benjen at last and Tarly ready to kill his son.
    1) It was interesting to see Sam steal his birthright sword, but what a dumb antagonistic thing to do?
    2) Esteros is so MFing boring. Total waste of time...Am I wrong?
    3) I don't miss the sand snakes. At all.
    4) In sum, although they haven't gotten to where they will ultimately go, all of the things we saw move the story forward from some positions many of these characters spent a long long time in, so for that I'm thankful. If we can just get Ms Targaryen out of that boring ass Esteros and on the move...

I think the Arya plotline is suffering from cut plot from the books. In the books, she actually completes her first assassination mission successfully. Given that we're now past the books in the TV show, it's possible what we've seen might indicate where the books will go, but it seems unlikely GRRM is going to throw away her arc that easily to me. I suspect we're going to see a rather different Arya arc in the show v the books.

What I find interesting is that they're now returning Jaime to where he was in the books (Riverrun) and seem to be moving those at the wall to the same place through Littlefinger's prodding of Sansa. Putting Jaime and Brienne in the same place at the same time implies to me that Lady Stoneheart might be making a belated appearance after all!

In the last episode, for the first time in many many episodes,
    Brotherhood Without Banners
was finally referred to. I don't think they've appeared since almost two seasons ago. That lends a little credence to your guess about
    Lady Stoneheart
    .

  15. El distraído

    El distraído Johnny Foreigner

Well I've just seen episode 7, and think that the theories surrounding Lady Stoneheart are onto something. The Septon preaching to the other builders in the Riverlands(?) said that he fought and killed many people. He also slit the throat of a young boy. Which house did he serve, and which houses did the other builders serve before they were reborn and decided to built that sept? I think that Lady Stoneheart is now the leader of The Brotherhood Without Banners, and has instructed her Brotherhood followers to carry out revenge attacks on all members of Houses Frey, Lannister and Bolton. There must have been a few former members of those 3 houses amongst those builders and I'd bet my bottom dollar that the sept was a member of one of those houses. I can't think of another reason why The Brotherhood would have slaughtered all those people. Unless that wasn't The Brotherhood's work..

So is Arya dead? As bored as I am of her storyline now, I hope not because otherwise the whole Braavos storyline will have been a complete waste of time. I think she'll survive though.

That letter Sansa was writing must have been written to House Arryn/Lord Baelish. I can't think who else would come to House Stark's aid.

This is my first attempt to write a spoiler, has it worked? I do watch Game of Thrones by the way, and enjoy it. I've thought the last two episodes were a bit meh. Knowing GOT though, it's building up to something decent!

^ not impossible. Very little is coincidence in this show, so the potential foreshadowing via the picture shown in the last bit of that article was likely deliberately placed by the writers.

  22. Fitz

In the books, literally nothing is coincidental. We are beyond that material though, and honestly the show runners don't seem to have the patience for the interconnected complications Martin seems to love. And that we readers love to hate to love.

  23. wfcmoog

    wfcmoog Tinpot

On the one hand, things over the past couple of episodes have seemed frustratingly slow, but then when you take a step back, things are so perfectly poised. Yes we want to see the Hound just teleport to Kings Landing and butcher the Mountain and yes we want John Snow to go one on one with Ramsay and cut him in half and feed him to Ghost, and yes we want to see Danaerys flying in on a dragon, putting Kings Landing to the torch whilst the Unsullied and Dothraki destroy all the Lannister armies and yes we want to see the Blackfish destroy the Freys, but we have to learn to wait.

There are so many angles now moving in various directions that an hour a week cannot allow them all to come together, but this is what GOT/ASOIAF does. It takes you down blind alleys and spreads the plot all over the landscape.

I still don't care about the Iron Islands.

Arya will be fine. I just hope she kills that *****.

Spoilers chaps? I know you've not revealed any plot details but perhaps best to wrap the spoiler text around it.
And the ******* of Bolton is no more! A truly horrible death for one of the most vile characters I think I've ever come across in film or TV. Shame about Rickon though.

So, House Bolton will be destroyed no doubt, along with Houses Umber and Karstark? That's what I'd do if I were Jon Snow at least, though with the white walkers coming perhaps it'd be wisest to form a truce.

House Arryn come in a save the day, when it truly looked like the Northmen would be hemmed in and slaughtered like dogs.

Jon Snow, Lord of Winterfell. Got a nice ring to it, hasn't it?

Well, I just think any discussion or mentioning of the new episode (because obviously it's going to be dynamite) should be wrapped in spoilers. Perhaps I have a bad taste left in my mouth from TVOR's mateless behaviour, but better to play it safe IMO.

So Smalljon Umber is dead (well done Tormund, who is my favourite character by the way!). What of Lord Karstark? We have no idea what happened to him.

Good episode but all very predictable.

  31. Arakel

    Arakel First Team

That's down to good writing. The reason we can predict things is usually down to two factors: either the plot is incredibly cliche, or the writers have done a great job of creating narrative cause and effect.

In GOT's case, we knew the Knights of the Vale were coming because Littlefinger told us 3-4 episodes ago. We knew because we saw Sansa write a letter to him.

We knew Rickon was a dead man because Ramsey is a psycho and Rickon is a direct threat to his claim to the north and Winterfell.

We knew Ramsey was going to get eaten by his dogs because he so kindly told us when taunting Jon that they hadn't been fed for a week.

We knew the Masters were ****ed because they brought a wooden army to a dragon fight.

Shows don't need to be unpredictable at every turn to be good; in fact, I tend to find shows that are incredibly unpredictable tend to be the least well written. If you can't predict most (not necessarily all) plotlines then I'd argue the writing has been sloppy.

am I the only one feeling just a little short changed? I mean yeah it was good. But **** me, we deserved good having been led here by the nose for weeks.

I disagree with Arakel. It was too entirely predictable. Nothing was held in surprise, which was disappointing.

I'd have liked to see more Dothraki fighting, more dragon destruction (they flew about and cawed a lot but pretty much only birned a couple of ships)

I loved the outcome but we all knew they were coming and I felt a few more thrills and spills along the ways wouldve made its better.

  34. hornetgags

    hornetgags McMuff's lovechild

They need the ships to launch their invasion. I knew Rickon would die, but I was waiting for the twist in the battle. However, it was satisfying and we know episode 9 will be the mindfeckery one in the series.

First the first time during GoT, I actually found Sansa attractive as a strong character.

I assume next week will be the reunion between Arya, Sansa and Jon and the launch from Mereen.

  35. Fitz

That's what I mean by not having Martin's material to refer to. There is no canon anymore to adhere to so the show runners are skipping past the details that make the books so worthwhile (and occasionally tedious) and hitting major plot points one after another in a pace that's unnaturally quick compared to the books and the previous seasons. It's great we are getting somewhere, but I already miss the care taken up to now...
