if i was paul mcshane i would of kept going, kneed henry in the side of the head and blame it on the momentum hitting him.
It's in FIFA's hands (see what I done there ), and no they won't do anything about it. So Real Madrid played Shamrock Rovers in a pre-season, Barcelona next up? Would be fun to see the large amounts of security.
Disgraceful cheating, and hopefully one of the best players of his generation in Henry will have hhis reputation severely tarnished. Shocking.
Could never happen, as was the situation after the reading 'goal' against us. If they start replaying games where the ref got big decisions majorly wrong, where would it stop? Only answer if you want this stopped is technology.
Commiserations to Ireland going out that way. But i dare say if England had been on the receiving end of the "hand of frog".. Irish eyes would have been smiling!
Just got back from paris.... feeling fairly sick on all accounts Cheers for the support lads, nobody deserves that.... In saying that should've put it to bed in the 90minutes though... Fantastic day, fantastic performance and fantastic support ...**** decision:rant::rant::rant:
I have lost much respect for Thierry Henry who - until last night - I felt was one of the more fair stars in football. He's come out admitting he handled it which goes a short way towards restoring my respect - but only a very very short way... FIFA CAN'T do a thing about it without messing up their politics on refereeing. But what they can do, and what I feel they should do, is BAN Henry till after the Cup. Should would teach him a lesson and act as an example to others that cheating comes at a price.
When you are in that situation it is very tough to get out of. I'm sure most of you have played football and handled it and if the refs see's it you stop, but if he doesn't how many of you have you play on as you are in the thick of it. In that situation I feel it is very hard for him to stop play if the ref did not blow up.
Punishing Henry is not the way forward. It's impossible to judge what a player should do in the heat of the moment, with so much at stake and a nation's expectation behind them. Do you say "Oh I handballed it" and expect the ref to chalk the goal off? Pats on the back from the Irish and a possible lynching when you return home. Or does the ref ignore you (after all - they can only call what they see) or do you assume that the officials saw the handling, but judged it ball to hand? The onus should never be on players to be "honest." it doesn't solve any of the problems in the game. The onus needs to be on giving refs and linesfolk the tools to do the job properly and to, if needed, to hand out punishment to players who are caught cheating, in the form of yellow and red cards. The arguments against introducing TV refs are now so wafer thin that it's become ridiculous. This is not just a team who has lost out, but a country. Their economy etc would have received a boost from participation in the WC and money would have been pumped into hospitality etc.
I think Robbie Keane has nailed it on the head with these comments.... Irish captain Robbie Keane thinks Fifa and Uefa will both be happy to see France through at Ireland's expense "They're all probably clapping hands, Platini sitting up there on the phone to Sepp Blatter, probably texting each other, delighted with the result," he said. "He (Henry) nearly caught it, so it's a bit of a killer. When you see the reaction of the players, (goalkeeper) Shay (Given) especially, he's two yards away from it," he said. "You don't get a reaction like that if he's not sure it's a handball. He almost caught it and ran into the net with it." Taken from: http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,12098_5703669,00.html
:sign15::sign15::sign15: In the heat of the moment we all do things we might later regret or may be out of character. Henry was playing for his country. He shouldnt be lambasted or punished retrospectively. There are some who have done a helluva lot worse for their respective countries. The onus is on the officials to 'officiate' properley using whatever tools they deem necessary to ensure that cheats are caught out. Football at times seems very archaic in today's technological age. There is advancement right across the board technology wise but the respective footballing authorities seem very reluctant to invest in it. Maybe the talking points and controversy brings more money in regarding chat shows, etc on Sky sports, ESPN etc, who knows. Something needs to be done though.
Video Technology They already use this in America for football (soccer) each manager gets 2 chances to check dubious decisions, if they are correct they still have 2 challenges, a bit like tennis.... So why cant FIFA put that worldwide? Bunch of useless tw@ts!!!
because the `big ` teams wont allow it , and the authorities are led by big team `puppets` like platini
And debatable points are newsworthy and create talk / chat / football shows on TV, where the vast amount of investment comes from.
There's talk of replays and all sorts. Sorry, whilst I sympathise, you can't rewrite the rules after the even has taken place. Yes it's a good argument for some sort of TV official, but you can't retrospectively update rules.
lets face it there wont be a replay....no push for technology and all will be forgotten in few months. as long and blatter has breath in his body nothing will change hes is heavily anti-technology......even when they had been developing a system with hawkeye creator tht would give signal to ref if ball cross the line...they had it almost 90% accurate when suddenly fifa shut the project down claiming “There has been no change of heart. Referees make decisions, not machines,” “I have defended goal-line technology but it has become clear that such systems are too complicated and very costly. Nor would they necessarily add anything positive to the game and could harm the authority of the referee."
shouldn't happen but cheating/trying to gain the best advantage is to be part of the modern game now. Unlucky in so many ways for Ireland..they deserved better. Can the game be re-played..probably not with only weeks till the WC draw.
Keanes comments made me think of the FA Cup Semi-Finals from 2007 season. There was no way the FA were going to let Blackburn or Watford go through to the Final. Bet they were ecstatic when they got a Chelsea v United final.
Much as I feel sympathy for the Irish fans and how they went out, the team could and should have put that game to bed well before the incident happened.
There was a world cup play off replayed for the 2006 world cup so it can be done.... Precedent It appears there is a precedent for replaying play-offs following Fifa's decision to order Uzbekistan's World Cup qualifier against Bahrain to be held again following a dubious refereeing decision. With a place in a decisive play-off for the 2006 World Cup finals up for grabs, Uzbekistan won the opening leg of their Asian zone play-off 1-0 but they were infuriated by a bizarre incident where a penalty was disallowed for an attacking player encroaching. Rather than retaking the penalty, a free-kick was awarded to Bahrain. Uzbekistan called for the game to be given to them 3-0, but were left incensed after the match was ordered to be replayed in its entirety due to the technical error by Japanese referee Toshimitsu Yoshida. Yoshida should have allowed the penalty to be retaken rather then disallowing the goal. Fifa gave their verdict on the decision to replay the Uzbekistan-Bahrain tie on their official website in 2005 but curiously chose not to mention the controversy surrounding the crucial goal in the France v Republic of Ireland game http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,12098_5704495,00.html
If thats the case FIFA have shot themselves in the foot. The game should be replayed, espeicially as there is no argument whether it was handball or not.
They were saying on 5live that incident was more down to a basic misunderstanding of the rules rather than just "missing a handball" though.
yer this has come up before. the "official" rules only mention handball foul when a player : "handles the ball deliberately (except for the goalkeeper within his own penalty area)" there is no definition of what deliberate handball is but its generally regarded if a player maintains control of the ball while handling its an infringement. this looks like the image of a man hu knows hes made a mistake.........
Oh. Is that why the ref blew when Robbie Keane's arm hit the ball when the French defending was pushing him in the back ?
No, they don't. You're confusing football with soccer. I really don't get the fuss. The referee made a mistake, Ireland went out. C'est la vie. They should have finished off the game earlier. Or France could have had a penalty minutes beforehand. That's how it goes. Henry's neither a cheat or a standout for what happened. He's a professional who wants to win. Hence when he sat down next to Richard Dunne it was all shrugs and handshakes. Dunne would have done exactly the same thing.
Yes but the ref clearly didn't see it (he would've had ruled the goal out I presume if he had?) but the above incident was quite simply a totally incorrect use of the rules.
