The micky taking regarding the name of our cup opponents got me thinking. Does any club actually have "Field" in its name? The answer is no, but these are the suffixes to place names for the top 6 tiers.

So, we're in the 34% of these 164 clubs with no suffix. I wonder what Yankee owners might choose for us?

Does Vale as in Port Vale count as a suffix?

I think they are the only team with a name that doesn't represent where they are.

I imagine our forum oracle, @hornetboy1 will be lobbying hard on this for 'Watford Frauds' which will best represent us.

    And is Port a prefix?

It can actually be either, suffix or prefix dependant on how it's used in the turn of phrase.

I believe Port Vale are named after the local valley in which were several ports on the (checks Wikipedia) Trent and Mersey canal. So the club is just named after a place, with no suffix.

Thinking about The Woolwich Arsenal, they’re the only club I can think of that are now known only by the suffix, having long ago dropped their location from their name.

Chelsea play in Fulham and Bolton play in Horwich. I expect there are more.

Vic has just reminded me that QPR play in Shepherd's Bush, not Queen's Park. And of course St Johnstone don't play in St Johnstone and Raith don't play in Raith.

    Watford Winkers.

Watford Hornets ? One of the first sides in Reading were Reading Hornets and Luton's first football side was Luton Wanderers which went bust.

Brighton and Hove Albion, play in neither town. Their ground is in Lewes. But that is at least in, (Albion), Great Britain.

Eh? The ground is near Falmer, but actually within the boundary of Brighton. Lewes is quite separate.

Tranmere are another one I think, they play Prenton which is next to Tranmere. At least I don't think they actually play in any area called 'Tranmere'.

I don't know about that one, but Grimsby don't play in Grimsby, they play in Cleethorpes.
