2009 L.A. Galaxy: palpably underwhelming?

What a ****ing idiot. He starts playing well for the first time in his career and he pisses it up by going there.

He should have gone to France or something, where he would get a game every week, and his many flaws wouldn't be shown up.

Not the league with the most intense and organised defences

With the legendary Maldini retiring, there will be time available, but the question is, 'will Gooch get it?'

The fact that Italian teams are known for their brutal defending doesn't seem like a negative as far as Gooch the defender goes...if he can be a part of that, and it will do nothing but help him.

As always the citical point is, will he play or not?

My opinion on this is quite fluid:
If he plays, it's a great move; if not I hate it.

Beckly-weckly has a say on the Donovan comments in Grant Wahl's book:
    check it here

Basically, he says no one has ever called him unprofessional before therefore it can't be true now.

He was in the stadium for tonight's game with Zidane after a cahrity event and they got to hear a lot of not very welcoming comments...his first game on the pitch at the Home Depot Center will be ugly. Look, I'm not thrilled with people chanting down players with the good guy's jersey on, but I certainly understand where they are coming from.

I hope the attitude will end up being "Hey Beckham! Give me a reason to forgive you!" rather than "Who the flock is David Beckham?" or "Go home you traitor!" or the like.

It's going to be tough for a while.

Here it is: Beck's return to the Galaxy...
In the photo, form the box they were in, I can tell they are observing the supporters group section in the southeast corner...
The smiles on Leiweke and Beckham's faces may be because he can hear the chant from the supporters groups that came up after Donovan had an amazing play literally wrestling the ball out of a Chivas defenders possession:
    "THAT'S OUR CAPTAIN!"

...and thus begins the counter attack on any headway Beckham may have made on soccer in America...

Why bother? He certainly doesn't. Thing is - he should never have gone there in the first place. I think he thought standards were higher than they are. I don't think he was given the full story.

So he came and saw that playing in the MLS would mean forfeiting any chance of a place in the national side. So he got the fark out of Dodge (LA) and went somewhere where he wouldn't depreciate faster than american car manufaturers stocks.

He took care of number 1. Becks... And how dare Donovan Landonson criticise him... THE David Beckham for not giving a damn. Surely just turning up is enough seeing as he is so superior to his team mates and opponents.

Seriously -he doesn't care and neither does anyone else. Only people who care are US "soccer" fans but they don't count do they? Surely not - they can't even call the sport they follow by it's rightful name. Screw'em...

Point of order...Soccer is a word developed and used by British English folks and adopted into the US&A. They stopped using it, we didn't. It is a "rightful" word, as rightful as calcio or futbol.

The US press is predisposed to hating soccer. Not simply ignoring it, but actively making fun of the game and it's players and followers. People like Javier Aguirre and Didier Drogba don't help the situation much either. Beckham got some good attention on the game here, which we fans really needed. If he just played the goddam game instead of lagging on the field, sulking and quitting, this point in US Soccer history would be the pinnacle, having just beaten Spain in a meaningful competition to go to a finals ina tough loss against world powerhouse Brazil. Yet, the press here barely noticed that success because of the looming Beckham circus tent about to implode...

    Worst case scenario.

I doubt it, players rarely go from the Allsvenskan to France and do well, he should have taken the offers he had from Hajduk or Eredivise clubs and bridged the jump somewhat. Can't see him ousting Sverkos or Traore either.

I prefer our players go somewhere to play, not to get a good salary at a prestigious club to sit on the bench.

Exactly, for this reason alone he should have stayed at Bajen, as much as I hate Stockholmare. Not that I'd class Sochaux as particularly prestigious, mind you.

LAG won 3-1, goals came from Eskandarian, Landon Donovan and Eddie Lewis.

The game was a thorough domination of the Red Bulls. The goal against came in the waning moments of regular time as a handball call in the box led to a PK, which JP Angel put in. 2 minutes later, the exact same call, the exact same Galaxy player, the same PK taker, but Team Donovan's Donovan Ricketts stoned Angel keeping the score at 3-1. The first handball looked real, the second..? Not so much...

Beckham didn't show up statistically, but he certainly allowed Lewis and Donovan to shred the truly awful Red Bulls. Lewis assisted on Donovan's goal, and Donovan assisted on Lewis' goal. Beckham came out in the 70' to let Chris Birchall on. Birchall, aka 'Me Mum', looked really good and has us excited for what our midfield can become. We have not had a great midfield since Mauricio Cienfuegos retired 5 years ago.

It's still too soon to really tell, but Arena's plan to stabilize the team first and then make Beckham fit in rather than the other way around seems to be a good one.

Galaxy are on a 4 game WIN streak. I can't even comprehend what that means...

Another point needs to be made.

In 2007, for Beckman's first game against the Red Bulls in New York, 66,000 people showed up to see it.

    In 2008, 50,000 came.

    Last night, 23,238.

People have figured out he is just collecting a paycheck and are pissed. The boos were far louder than the cheers this time around.

NYTIMES descibes him as "slow and had little role" in the game.

In California, you can drink in your seat. The Home Depot Center where the Galazy are at home, the capacity is about 27,000.

The game last night was in the Meadowlands in New Jersey, which seats about 80,000.

23,000 in a stadium that seats 80,000 is sad indeed...

OK...the following is truly unbelievable. Just before half time, one of the Riot Squad regulars held a sign up in front of his seat sayong something to the effect of 'Beckham is a fraud'. As Ronaldinho took a corner kick directly in front of our corner seats, Beckham saw it and took exception, gesturing at him vaguely.

The conrer was take with no interesting effect, and the half ended.

Beckham then came to the corner calling and gesturing to the individual to come down out of the stands and face him toe to toe and say it.

    The guy obliged.

He was immediately taken down by security while Beckham was ushered away.

Wow. Beckham totally lost his cool...

Incredible. If I hadn't seen it happen 20 feet from my face, I wouldn't have believed it.
