I’m on the Isle of Arran until the 23rd, absolutely beautiful place. Haven’t walked so far in years so I am sleeping very well! The weather has been very kind so far.

 

And Arran, Arran so far away.

 

Got back from Arran yesterday, lovely place and I loved it there but got I absolutely battered by the midges. Packing up the trailer tent at 07:30 was not a good idea, neither was using the camps dish washing station in the evening a few days earlier. If you go between May and September stay somewhere on the coast. Vicious little bastards.

I came back from Belgrade last week. Almost melted. First time I've been in the height of summer.... Never again.

 

It's "only" about 30° at the moment. I think early last week was about 40°.

Were you on holiday?

 

Yes, it was between 36-40 the time I was there. Just a bit of time to relax and practice the language - I suspect much like you?

 

Yeah, basically that's our trip too.

Do you have links to ex-yugoslavia or like me just love the region and gone all in (language too)?

 

Went to Turkey in late June, (first time for a long time out of school holiday dates, GTF in), and as we were leaving the temperature made a hell of a leap. Was very happy not to be there in the July furnace.

 

The med region is lovely in April & May, a bit too hot in June, and unbearable Aug-Sept unless you want to just sit by a pool with a cold drink, …which I don’t.

 

Can anyone recommend anywhere based on the following criteria, as i'm finding it tough to pick anywhere:
- Hot in September
- Bit of Culture/bit of sitting by a pool
- Not a package holiday full of annoying Brits
- Maximum £1600 for two people for 5 ish nights (ideally cheaper)
- No car hire required

Only place you’re guaranteed the sun in September would be the likes of Greece or Cyprus. Go to one one of the Greek islands. Big fans of Rhodes but stay clear of Faliraki

Greek islands is a good idea, but try one of the smaller less commercial ones if you want to avoid package holiday Brits.

 

Maybe Ibiza but not the party side obviously. The other side of the island is beautiful

 

My son spent a few months in Seville last year, so we went out there quite a bit. If you decide to go there I can recommend some excellent restaurants.

If I were you I'd go to Morocco, though.

 

Must admit my first thought was North Africa too. Morocco or Tunisia particularly would fit the brief.

 

Just came back from a two-week holiday driving from Watford to Croatia, spent a week there and drove back.

I'd never done a trip like that before, but I couldn't recommend doing something like that enough; we got to visit lots of different places, and although the motorways got a bit monotonous at times it was a great experience, the main thing being that you can stop off in places where you would never think to. On Monday I was about 20 miles from Udine at one point, and I was tempted to detour there and leave a banner!

The highlights were:

• City of Luxembourg, I mean no-one goes on holiday there but I can't think of a cleaner and prettier capital city in Europe (although I was in Prague earlier in August which comes a close second).
• Staying in a village high up in the Alps in summer, the scenery was stunning, I did this twice once on the way and the return although in different part of the country.
• Bled, a lakeside town in the Slovenian Alps.

I'm knackered now and back to my desk on Monday.

 

Sounds great. I'm going to do similar at some point, though I'd go through Croatia then Bosnia to Serbia as there's so much I want to see there.

Did you book accommodation in advance?

 

We booked our ferry crossings and the week in Croatia back in February/March, but we did not book any of our stop points until we were on the road, this was the general advice we got from people who we knew who'd done European trips before. The prime reason is that we had no idea whether we would have delays at Dover, which would have had a massive knock on effect. As it happened we were on the next ferry to the one we were booked on so we did arrive in Calais only an hour later than originally planned. Once on the road we mostly used booking.com to get our accommodation, on the way we planned 3 stops and 4 on the return journey.

To enable us to get to our destination for the 4th night, we reasoned that we needed to be on night:

1. Near the Belgian/German border (Aachen perhaps).
2. Roughly halfway between Stuttgart & Munich.
3. Somewhere halfway between Salzburg & Ljubljana.

The day before we left we decided to scratch Aachen and go via Calais>Dunkirk>Lille>Charleroi to get to the SE of Belgium, we didn't find anything there and went 30 minutes on and found a very good place in Luxembourg outside the capital. Apart from the first day and the last two days, we set aside time for visiting places too. All in all it worked out well, but I admit that I was running out of energy by the penultimate day and pushed for home, I think had I done 4 days to and 3 days back I may have faired better. My wife insisted on visiting Venice, so in order to do that on the return trip, we stayed in a town 40 minutes by train from Venice, so we slung our bags in the hotel and jumped on the train and had 4 hours in Venice, so for the second night we headed north and stopped in a skiing village (cheap at this time of year) south of Innsbruck. Then the last two stops were near Stuttgart and in central Belgium (about 2.5 hours from Calais).

Apart from the night in Italy, all places we stayed at during the road trip legs of the holiday were within 5 minutes of the motorway network. That makes a great difference, even the places we stopped to visit were very close to the motorway, I think the furthest was about 20 minutes from the network.

It was the first time I'd done anything like this; would I do it again? Yes, but not as far.

 

I love to travel.

 

I wouldn’t go so far as to say Luxembourg is the prettiest capital in Europe but it’s definitely underrated. Food and wine very good.

 

Sweden to England, we always drive back to England 250 km from home to G*teborg, overnight ferry to Kiel arrive 9:15 am then 600 km drive to Hoek van Holland take the overnight ferry to Harwich arrive 5:30 am then 160 km to destination so just over 1000 km in 48 hrs including two nights on the ferry

 

Possibly, I went on a Sunday and it was very quiet and it's spotless with regards to litter. No-one would necessarily do a weekend city break to there, it's just not really on many people's radar; so on that front I'd agree it's underrated. I was only there for about an hour and a half, but I'd like to go back one day now I've sampled it.

 

I spent a weekend there, a night in the city and two nights in the ‘country’. It was very pleasant, albeit a bit ‘antiseptic’.
