Roy has excellent pedigree, although he is a pretty uninspired choice.

Beggars can’t be choosers though. He knows how to survive relegation with crap teams, can speak multiple languages and I once saw him in a restaurant.

    Welcome to Watford, Woy.

How on earth has he not been picked up yet? Took Granada from the Segunda to Europe, and left by his own accord, not because things went sour...I bet he regrets that decision

    Hilarious.

    Couldn't be funnier.

I'll laugh even harder when he keeps us up.

The great escape is on people!!!

Yes, they're all deeply flawed "characters". Ming's daughter would be a big plus in my book.

Er... Do you not remember the way the club was run when he was last here? His players had to defer their wages in order to avoid administration.

Wow, another highly successful coach of top teams, a former England manager this one, about to add his to the list of glorious names who have seen out an uncomfortable and ultimately fruitless footnote to their careers at the Vic. Welcome Roy.

Looking at it dispassionately (not easy), I’m inclined to agree with HB1 - probably our best chance of staying up vs someone with no experience of the PL. Suspect Ray Lew is a big part of Hodgson’s relative success in these situations too.

All things considered he's probably the best we could realistically hope for.

His last four seasons with Palace included one 11th placed finish, one 12th, and two 14th. They're ultimately a pretty comparable club to us, and we know he knows the league. Best of luck to him.

Nice to have RL back under somewhat happier circumstances, too. Lewington worked some minor miracles in that era.

Brilliant. It’s like the club has moved from football into becoming a permanent comedy installation.

If memory serves, it was Hodgson who gave Rose his first senior cap. It's possible they might have a good relationship. Perhaps we'll see a redemption arc to the Rose story yet.

Not sure it's that. They are desperate to stay in the division but just absolutely incapable of forming a coherent plan of how to do so.

They just bounce from one crisis to the next fundamentally changing strategy and tactics in the hope something will work.

Wildcard choice from the coalition of chaos. Welcome to the club Roy, and welcome back Ray.

I can't possibly ascertain if this is good, bad or anything in between.

If they don't listen to Claudio, they're hardly going to listen to Roy.

I think this is very much a "we wanted Allardyce but we didn't want Allardyce" attempt.

I really like Roy Hodgson at least.

I do enjoy the context of former beef being squashed between Roy Vs Harry and Roy Vs Pozzo.

Someone mentioned it earlier that when he was in charge of Udinese he slagged off the club after he was sacked. It would be hilarious if this happened again.

If it's definitely Roy and he manages to either (somehow) keep us up, or at the very least make us look like a team capable of achieving a clean sheet or two but we go down with a bit of fight, then I'm happy to eat humble pie.

But replacing one 70+ manager with another who'd already retired, I just can't see it working at this basket-case of a club. If the players already know/suspect he'll be jettisoned at the end of the season (or sooner), will they really run their hearts out for him? I'm not so sure. Normal service resumed in about 5 games time probably.

    Happy to be proven wrong.

Very different though other than being English and defensive.

Roy speaks Italian (and a number of other languages). Sam's only experience of European culture is that he read the Count of Monte Bisto.

Sam also generally demands expenditure and backing, both in terms of his wages and transfers and some degree of control over incomings. None of which he will get at Watford.

Can’t wait to see 74 year old Hodgson try to understand 24 year old Dennis using TikTok in the changing rooms.

Roy Hodgson’s record at bottom half PL sides is absolutely impeccable, including relegation scraps at Palace (first season), WBA and probably the best ever of the great escapes at Fulham in 07/08. Age has to be a concern (I think he’ll be 3 years older than Bobby Robson was when he took charge of his final game) but unlike Ranieri there is no evidence to show that he is in decline as a manager and if you look through his career he has a seriously good record of reinventing himself when he needs to (at Fulham following past failures in England, at WBA post struggles at Liverpool and at Palace after Euro 2016).

Lots of people have counted out and bet against Hodgson and they have usually been wrong. While I was discouraged when I first heard his name reading his record and considering it fairly should cause only make one more pleased with his appointment (I’d probably say the same about Allardyce too to be fair). It definitely seems like an uninspiring choice but that might not mean it is the wrong one.

Really weird that Watford was Ray Lewington's last full time role as a manager and ever since he's been an assistant, especially as he did a pretty good job in tough circumstances.

Harry might be getting worried he's for the boot.

    Pozzo's haven't sacked a mascot for a while.

Could be Harry mining a heart attack then a dive as Roy enters the stadium for his first home match that seals his fate.
