Tim Vickery (who I can't stand but is very knowledgeable on Sth American players) on Talk Sport this afternoon could not have spoken anymore highly about him. Said he has a wand of a left foot but also wasn't sure we would get a work permit for him at the moment
Vickery famously said Richarlison was an awful signing. I don’t think his international appearance will earn him any WP points but he may be considered an ‘exceptional talent.’
Yeah, it seems as if internationals only count if they're competitive (aka not a friendly) game - which now shifts him to failing to get the work permit. We can appeal though if: a. exceptional circumstances prevented the Player from achieving 15 points, and if those exceptional circumstances did not apply, the Player would have achieved 15 points; or b. the Youth Player shows significant potential and is of sufficient quality to enhance the development of the game in England and justify the Exceptions Panel recommending that a GBE be awarded He would've received some points (not sure how many) by most likely featuring for Colombia's youth teams this season - however all South American youth internationals have been cancelled this season due to Covid - which gives us a good case for point A. The fact that he's now played for the senior international team is proof of that and also satisfies point B so I think we'd have a decent case!
How many points does one get for youth international appearances? Would it have been enough to make up the difference?
I remember when he said Richarlison was rubbish. A couple of years later he's a full fledged Brazil international footballer, a £50m player and wanted by PSG, Barcelona and Real Madrid. Tim Vickery is a fraud.
To be fair, I don’t doubt he watches a lot of South American football and he has a larger sample size/reference point for judging South American talent than I do/most of the people on the forum. I am not sure his knowledge of South American football is much deeper than the knowledge of some of our more knowledgable forum members re English football. Still, there are others I find to be more knowledgable, such as Carl Worswick and Simon Edwards, particularly re Colombian football. Anyway, those two are also really excited by Asprilla.
I actually think Richarlison is very overrated but I know what you mean. Vickery may well be wrong about this kid but he seriously raved about him and he will know more than most about him I suspect
Nobody has a 100% record when it comes to young players! Besides, while I'm sure Richarlison has been tentatively linked with those big clubs in the past, how much genuine interest was there, and are teams still interested now?
My point was that Vickery stated Richarlison would do nothing at Watford and wasn't a very good player. What happened after that is all factual.
While I am giddy with excitement at the prospect of him playing for us one day, I am a little concerned that it might be too early for him, a huuuuuge leap for him, on and off the pitch, and for one so young too
Not sure, can't seem to find it in the documents, but I'm sure youth apps counted in a previous version! And the fact that Colombia are a top 20 nation he'd probably get a fair few points. I make his revised total 10 which is 5 short so those youth apps might be enough to make up the difference. I'm certain we'd get accepted on point B alone though since he's the 2nd youngest player ever to play for their senior team - and for a team ranked 16th in the world that must say a lot about his ability.
Can he retain the ball? That’s someone we’re crying out for on top of another centre half. Our defenders would be under a lot less pressure if we had a midfield that could hold onto the ball.
I'm sure Cucho can help him settle in but I agree with what you're saying. Don't know about his home life but going to a different country and continent at 17 can be difficult. I would think the club is fairly well set up to help in that regard but you never know how young players will react. it's also blooming cold here at the moment, it's currently 78 degrees in Envigado!
I mean all that's a given, but the main thing I'm concerned about is that he's currently built like a wafer!
Reckon we should get Heurelho back in on an 18-month deal to pal-up with Yaser and help him settle in.
Though weighing against that is it was an international played outside of the FIFA calendar and so Colombia were forced to call up local players only. It’s basically the lowest of the low in the hierarchy of senior international appearances. Better than nothing mind.
Columbia have a number of full internationals coming in next few months so hopefully he will get a call up for those. Hes not likely to feature for us this season anyway, so better hes playing week in week out in a league/team where he feels comfortable.
He's been included in the Colombia squad for their World Cup qualifiers. So we need him to play against Peru or Argentina and he qualifies for a work permit?
Asprilla! We've just signed a guy named Asprilla, And suddenly that name Will never be the same to me Asprilla! Asprilla! Say it loud and there's music playing, Say it soft and it's almost like praying Asprilla I'll never stop saying Asprilla!
Is it enough if he just gets on the pitch? I believe both fixtures are during the transfer window too. Even if he doesn’t get any minutes simply being called up will be handy for the exceptional talent argument. If he has enough points now, we may just leave him at Envigado until June, according to one Colombian reporter. I think part of the idea of loaning him to Udinese or Deportivo Cali was to get extra WP permit but this would minimise disruption to his development/life. Would prefer him to come straight here and bed in.
Yeah the summer might be a better time to get him over, JP came over in the winter and barely got a kick for the rest of the season.
Selection at that point wasn't based on merit for whatever reason. We saw when he did play he should have probably have been playing ahead of Deeney given the state he was in.
Really impressed with the videos, thank you @reids for the links. I will say it he looks as good as JP did when we were first learning about him. I really hope we can get his work permit/visa sorted asap. Another youngster to edge out the old timers in our squad
