It could be as much because he didn't impress in training the last time he was called up, rather than just because he's hardly featured for Swansea - he didn't feature at all in the last set U21 matches either.
He was injured going into the training camp. He said as much when interviewed before the League Cup game. You do like to be negative about the abilities of the young players on loan don’t you!
I didn't know that about the injury. Well, none of them have done anything yet to prove me wrong thus far, so... JP is the only one that seems worth being positive about. I've not written off Stuparevic or Suarez yet either. Wilmot could also come good, but he's clearly got a fair way to go.
A few Swansea accounts I follow on Twitter are suggesting that Swansea might move to a back 3 soon, which will hopefully mean some gametime for Ben.
Came off the bench for England U21s at half time tonight http://www.thefa.com/news/2019/oct/11/england-mu21s-slovenia-report-111019 Hit the post with a header. But presumably also part of the defence that threw away a 2-0 lead at the end.
The whole match can be watched on Youtube below. England were comfortable and the better team for most of it, but gave away two goals at the end from poor mistakes. Wilmot had nothing to do with the first conceded goal, the keeper just passed the ball right to their striker. For the second one Wilmot made a schoolboy error in letting the ball bounce rather than head it back to the keeper, but then Panzo did the same. The keeper was slow coming off his line as well and Panzo had to give away a free-kick, which they then scored from. Ramsdale could have done better with the FK also, and in general looked poor. Wilmot played in the middle of a back 3 and looked decent, mostly in his passing, reading of the game, and tackling. However he had a few iffy moments, mainly from misjudging headed clearances and once being done for pace. I do still think his potential will be curtailed by his lack of pace, as well as his limited aerial ability from being fairly small for a CB and not having much of a leap. Whoever Slovenia's left-sided CB was looked a very good prospect, I think it was David Zec, though he's already at Benfica.
If you take the goal he scored today and add it to our total tally yesterday we'd have won the game Madness to loan him out
He did this thing at the end of the game, where he threw his hands up in the air, pumped his fists, and screamed with what looked like delight. Then his teammates began patting him on the back and they all looked very happy. I’m not sure what happened to bring them all such happiness. Very strange and completely different to what happens after our games.
I would dearly liked to have integrated him into the team last season. We are very poor in integrating young players into the team. Not using Wilmot for example is hardly going to encourage others to come and join. And I am sure Andy Scott who recommended Wilmot to Swansea left because he was frustrated by the signings policy. He selected several English players from the pyramid and been told no thanks. Fingers crossed he plays a few games now and we can recall him in January. He is mobile, good on the ball, does all the basics well such as getting the ball out of play when required. Nothing fancy. And nice to see Byers doing well too.
The winner against Cardiff was always going to get that at Swansea. It's at 40 seconds in the vid below for those that missed it. Wilmot is starting games now for Swansea as one of their two first-choice CBs at the start of the season, Joe Rodon, is out injured for three months. It's fortunate for Ben as he should get a good run of games now, otherwise he would still have been rotting on the bench for them.
But their fans are already saying he’s shown enough to keep his place when the other fella’s back. I thought it may just be thanks to his goals but they voted him MotM in the 1 game he didn’t score in as well.
Apparently we didn't let Swansea play Willmott in the cup tie today .. Are we thinking of getting him back ?
It was in the terms of his loan deal. I'm assuming in case we needed to recall him this month, no idea if that's even an option we have though.
Not surprised at all to read these. As I've commented before, I don't see him as ever having the physical attributes to be a top CB.
