Disagree, the guy plays his heart out and puts enormous pressure on defenders, leaving gaps for others.

There is a big shortage of physical forwards - hey even Aidy realized his mistake in trying to sell him to Preston.

Hendo is our leading scorer, with a proven record at this level, and the service he got last season was spasmodic - if you put a decent midfield behind him plus `on song` wingers he will fly.

The fact he is evidently in demand from some big clubs doesn`t suprise me - he is fully valued at £2.5 million and at that figure we will sell because we are desperate for cash and no one has come in for Shittu.

The trouble is we have no natural replacement, our other forwards will get brushed off the ball too easily.

The question is would we attract someone better within our budget?

Dave Jones has confirmed that Cardiff have tabled bids for Watford's Darius Henderson and Wigan's Marlon King.

The Bluebirds are keen to boost their firepower ahead of the upcoming campaign, with a new striker having been their top priority since the 2007/08 season came to a close.

Unfortunately for Jones his efforts have so far been in vain, with Marcus Bent opting to join Championship rivals Birmingham and Scotland international Kris Boyd unable to be tempted away from Rangers.

With Sheffield United also understood to be in the race for Henderson's signature Jones admits that he may miss out again, while King's wages may prove to be to be a sticking point in any potential switch from the top flight Latics.

"We made a bid for Henderson but the price went too high," Jones told Wales on Sunday.

"We are also keen on Marlon King, but we simply can't afford the fee plus his Premiership-level wages.

"But we will get the players we need. There are still plenty of quality strikers on our list.

"We don't have a number one, number two and so on - the players we are interested in can all make an impact at Championship level and beyond."

While Jones continues to toil away in his pursuit of a new forward he can at least take comfort from the fact that he has the full support of the club's board in regards to his transfer dealings.

"We have money available to strengthen the squad and we will use that where necessary," said chairman Peter Ridsdale.

"There certainly aren't unlimited funds. We don't have the money to buy a £5m player and finance the wages which inevitably go with that.

"That just isn't possible at this stage of Cardiff City's progress, but we will bring in the players our manager needs to complete his squad for the start of the season."

As most of you who have read my previous threads know I have allot of time for Darius Henderson, not for his skill, but for the fact he wears his heart on his sleeve and give 100% every game. Not the most gifted of strikers his defensive qualities are often overlooked.

However £2.5mil is probably twice what he is worth and if (this is the rub) Aidy can be trusted to bring in a more capable replacement then I'd buy Hendo's rail ticket to Sheffield myself (off peak of course).

I agree with all of this (despite my earlier comment)

I think he is a good player for us as he puts 110% effort in but I would take £2.5million as we could buy better strikers with that.

Good post, i don't see why everybody hates him, top scorer last season and always 'wears his heart on his sleeve' as they say, and usually trys his best.

I think everybody needs to overlook the fact he might not have the best first touch blah blah, but is a vital part of our team.

I don't think anyone 'hates' Hendo but a lot of people (including me) lost patience with him last season. His passion is undeniable but it still doesn't cover up his lack of quality. £2.5 million would be enough to buy maybe 2 better strikers to replace him with.

  9. Aberystwyth_Hornet

Agree with the above £2.5 million would be a great price and after what happened last summer i imagine his wages will be higher than his worth to the team. £2.5 million for Hendo and £1.5 million for Shittu and we could get 3 decent players and hopefully save on wages.

Last season Hendo became lazy, whiny and fouled everything, all the time.

He spent as much time doing nothing as he did fouling, which is an achievement.

We have seen him be effective and useful, and hopefully he will return to being so, stop complaining, and start working his ar5e off like he used to so we can all love him again.

£2.5m is a massive overvaluation. I would think he is worth £1.5m tops. IF we get offered £2.5m I would be very much inclined to take it - if Shittu does not move anywhere that is.

He is however more than capable at this level and is the only striker in our squad proven to be able to score goals at this level. I would think he is necessary to our promotion.

according to Sjy Sports he's now in talks with Sheff Utd - doesn't mention a fee.

Anything over £2.5M is a good deal - anyone know if Gills are due a sell on %?

Skysports.com understands Sheffield United have agreed a fee with Watford for Darius Henderson.

Henderson has attracted interest from Cardiff, Birmingham and Wolves, but United have jumped to the head of the queue for the big striker by agreeing a deal with Watford.

Watford have given Henderson permission to open talks with United over a possible move to Bramall Lane.

Henderson scored 13 goals for Watford last season, but they have reluctantly decided to let the former Gillingham man leave Vicarage Road.

United boss Kevin Blackwell has moved for Henderson as he seeks a replacement for Derby-bound Rob Hulse and Henderson is expected to tie up his move to Yorkshire early next week.

If I'm honest I'm pleased with this because as I said it should allow us to sign someone with much greater quality, hopefully a 20 goal a season player

2.5 mill! Yes please! My only worry would be if we didnt bring in an experienced striker as all of our current strikers are very young and lack experience at the level we are at. How much of the 2.5mill do you think Aidy will get to spend?

I feel this is the most perceptive post in this thread, by far.

The board show they are going to sell any player of any value that other clubs want.

I fear we will be left with players who will take us to Division One.

What happens if someone bids £2.5 million for Tommy Smith?

We may disagree about Henderson's usefulness as a player (I think I'm at odds with every other poster on this thread, as i don't even think he tries very hard) but I agree with your point about the board. Simpson is on an asset strip. The only difference I can see with Petchey, is that Jack actually managed to update the stadium during his tenure and there weren't fans queing up to call him a great chairman as he cashed in on anyhting that wasn't nailed down.

I suspect you were questioning why wasn't the money spent on players though at the time...

We did get a couple of new stands through raised funds but that was a must because of the Taylor Report really...would have we and other clubs bothered if that had not occured?

Simspon HAS done a decent job in the view of many for saving the club after the ****** saga.

It was rather unforunate about the Russos I am sure most admit as they also did help the club....and its Aidy/Ashton who has wasted the transfer money really.

He is a fan but maybe not the businessman.

I'm a big fan of Darius and would be gutted to see him leave. The reason is the same as last year: He is different from our other strikers and it's always good to have different players that can change a game completely if needed. I said last year that we would sorely miss him if he went to Preston and I think he proved that during the autumn, especially when he came on against Southampton. By throwing in Hendo you can change everything and create panic in your opponent's box. When you are putting your opponent under pressure and getting crosses in, he is more likely to score than any other striker we have.

As a target man I don't really like him. It's when we get him into the box that he really can use all his power and finishing skills. Yes, he makes a lot of fouls - most big strikers do. Yes, his touch isn't the best and yes he's not that good at flick ons in the air, but he's still very valuable because he's our only POWER forward.

You don't need to hoof just because you have a big striker.

I would not mind for the fee so long as we actually got some players in of good value...now I know that has been hard for Aidy!¬

Interesting. I can't see Aidy keeping faith with Priskin/Theo/Henderson (Liam)/Hoskins next season. At least I farking hope he doesn't, I think I'd go mental.

2.5 Mil could buy 2 or 3 decent players.

    Keith Andrews 500k?

    A striker £1m?

    A right back 1m?

(Pure speculation but I would be happy if our remaining summer budget was spent like that)

I completely agree. With Hendo gone that leaves us with priskin and hoskins as the only first team strikers.

The only way i can see Hendo going is if we cant get a buyer for Shittu. Perhaps aidy would make a move for that striker at peterborough we where linked with recently?

I presume with so many clubs suddenly interested in him that he's eitther been touted around by the club or his agent!

Look at all the players who had new deals with increased wages. Anyone of those are potential saleable assetts.

    Poom has to go imho.

DeMerit, Smith, Jobi, Francis and maybe Lee.

If bids come in they could easily be off.

If you're right, and you can't be, but if you are, that would leave us with the worst first team in my lifetime. Without question, a relegation certainty this and next season. I know we miss our rivalry with Luton, but this isn't the way to revive it.

  30. krisvad

    krisvad Forum Viking

You're right that not all of them will go. But also, I didn't say we wouldn't bring in replacements.

The window remains open for more than a month still so let's not worry unnecessarily. I doubt Smith and Jobi goes - but they will be on quite high wages and if the money's right I think they will go.

As for the rest I doubt it will be difficult to find replacements cheaply and therefore, wouldn't mind them going.

  31. wfcmoog

    wfcmoog Tinpot

In principle, they are all replaceable for me, apart from Smithy. I doubt we'd be able to find someone of his consistency to play for us for any money, let alone a cut price fee and wages.

A uni mates dad is on the board at Plymouth, he was talking to me months ago about our financial predicament which, at the time, came as a shock.
Everyone knows how ****ed we are and it would appear have done for a while so it would appear we are seen as an easy target for a bargain. I guess our 'best' players are attractive to a host of clubs for this reason.
