Tis a goal worth seeing if you missed it on the news. Up against a couple of preening superstars for the FIFA Puskas Award.
If the exact same goal had been scored against a top men's defence and goalkeeper, I'd be very impressed. Of course I still am impressed, but I recognize it as being a great goal in the limited context of a much weaker standard of play, and therefore of little (if any) consequence.
But you have to also take into context Stephanies much weaker standard of play if you want to call it that.
Genuinely disappointed by that. It was a good goal sure but nothing more. Bit of control turn and shoot
That's absurd as then only goals in the Champions League or World Cup could count by this logic. The greatness of the goal is down to her sublime control, especially the second touch, which would have floored much better defenders. If you were correct this sort of goal would be routinely scored by top footballers in pre-season friendlies against lower or non-league opposition.
And yet I've never seen the like in all my 90 years of watching the Horns.* *possibly small exaggeration within this sentence.
Utter crap, a bloke scores that goal and it would be the best goal ever. It was sublime, a brilliant effort.
Nonsense. The people who say that are actually creating this mythical divide. Good goal, but it's not the best goal ever. But then again, I think half the goals on Goal Of The Month/day aren't that great so I'm not easily pleased. Just because it was a girlie who scored it doesn't mean it's amazing.
That was a superb goal. If the camera had been at a height that we're used to it would have looked even better as it was so far out and hit so cleanly.
There are three things I notice about this goal. There is next to no movement from either side in the build up. There is no pressure on the girl playing the ball in, and the goalkeeper makes no effort to reach it even though it's at an ideal height. At any reasonable standard of men's football (I'm not even talking league 1 here) you would not expect this goal to be scored. Yes, she hits the ball well and the flick is eye-catching - but it's all so bloody slow! I think the reason why this type of goal isn't seen in the type of fixtures you mention is because even at a comparatively low level of men's football, the standard is still pretty high - far higher, faster and more physical than even the top women's games. And to qualify, when I said ' top defence and goalkeeper' I really meant the professional men's game.
It was fabulous technique, but what about the player marking her? The defender behind Steph should have been able to move to block the shot in the time it took her to swivel onto her left foot, but this girl hardly moved. Given the level it was played at, this nomination was clearly tokenism, but was probably justified in that it enabled a really good piece of skill by a female player to be showcased. Most wouldn't have expected that level of skill in women's football. Incidentally, my three sons, all of whom have better footballing technique than I had, were all more generous about Steph's goal than I have been here.
Looks like she's just in the area as you can clearly see the D so I don't think that is a factor. It's a good goal but certainly the weakest of all the nominations.
Just imagine...Alan Hansen would be saying "the defender should of closed her down quicker". Bottom line is, you can only score against the opposition in front of you and if Doyley had scored that we'd believe we were in Nirvana. Is it top 3 in the world I can't say but not a bad big of skill at all!
I don't know how Rodriguez's is even on the shortlist. Chest it and volley it in, what's so special about that? Probably happens every weekend in the Conference.
Think the camera angle and video quality lets it down a bit. Still, for me Vydra's volley against Leicester is better so not sure what all the hype is about.
She didn't win. The award went to Rodriguez. The Balon D'Or went to Ronaldo again. FIFA meanwhile have released the voting for that award, 1 vote each going to a national coach and the team captain. Interesting choice by Woy... http://resources.fifa.com/mm/docume...2/50/58/45/fboaward_menplayer2014_neutral.pdf
Hold on, Hodgson voted Mascherano for WORLD PLAYER OF THE YEAR? The actual f**k? Crazy, saggy faced, finger chewing old coot.
Germany won the World Cup so I'm more surprised their players didn't get more of the vote. Real Madrid only came third in La Liga so why the Ronaldo W**kfest?
Rodriguez' diving header won the goal of the year (not as good as Fessi's v Leicester though). Great goal that it was I'm glad this girl didn't win because she never had any real defensive pressure to contend with.
